Hi guys & girls,
I need your help deciding on a price for my new app, but before I get to that here’s a small update on the new MotoMap:
It’s progressing nicely but it’s all taking a bit longer than I was expecting because it’s a lot of work to get it right. I’m hoping to have a first beta version available in about 3 months.
I’ve had many enthusiastic people asking me how to register as a beta tester. Well, once the beta is ready I will be sending out an email to all current MotoMap users and I will be posting here on the blog, explaining how you can sign up.
So, without further ado, here are some more screenshots:
Now to the part where I need your help. I’m struggling a lot with how I’m going to price this new app. First of all, it’s going to be a new app (so not an update to the new MotoMap) and I don’t want the people that bought MotoMap to pay again for the same functionalities they already have. 2nd of all, I can’t make it free for everything and always. While I’m having the time of my life doing this, I eventually need to earn enough money to support my family with this.
So, here’s my question: How much and in what way would you be willing to pay for this new app?
I’ve thought about some options and, as I like honesty and transparency, I’m laying it all out here:
- App is free for the first week or so. After that you pay a one time fee to use the app.
- App is free for the first week or so. After that you pay a fixed/small amount per month or year to use the app.
- App is free. You pay a one time fee for premium functionality like Voice Nav and Offline Maps
- App is free. You pay a fixed/small amount per month or year for premium functionality like Voice Nav and Offline Maps
- You pay for the app. (And remember, you only see screenshots and perhaps a small video of the app. You won’t have the possibility to try it first.)
What option would you prefer (or perhaps you can think of another option / combination of the above) and how much would you be willing to pay?
Looking forward to your responses.
Cheers and ride safe,
Guido
UPDATE: Due to a lot of bugs surfacing in MotoMap I decided I couldn’t leave my current users out in the cold. So I spent quite some time updating MotoMap. This delayed the work on the new App quite a bit though. New expected availability date: Fall 2015.
I would think people appreciate the possibility to test the app e.g. for a specified time (> not 5).
But afterwards, speaking for myself, I would prefer to buy and own the app for a fair price. That’s a no-brainer. So definitely no fee per month (> not 2 and 4).
Freemium is a good option (Nr. 3), but like I said I prefer a no-brainer: that would be Nr. 1 – that depends on the price, of course. 😉

i would like to think that as i have just paid for your current app, there will be an update available for us current users.
a little disapointed to find out that you are creating a new app and ditching the old one VERY ANNOYED.
Hi Andy,
I’m sorry you feel that way. Let me try to explain my reasoning behind making a new app, in stead of an update.
First of all, It’s not because I want to make more money of my existing users, but it’s because I want to improve the service, functionality and user experience I’m offering to my users. MotoMap is based on relatively old technology, routing techniques and programming language. The new app has all modern versions of those, making it possible to offer more functionality and an overall better user experience (like voice navigation and offline maps for example).
As I explained above, the functionality you get with MotoMap now will be for free in the new app so no additional costs on top of the 2.99 you paid for MotoMap.
So, it’s not like I’m ditching the old app, I’m replacing it with a better one.
I hope I have taken away a bit of your concern with this explanation? If not, or if you have any more questions, comments or feedback please feel free to contact me here or directly at the support link above. I’ll be happy to help any way I can.
Best regards,
Guido
P.S. I will be releasing an update for MotoMap soon to address some issues which surfaced recently.
Hello, I prefer nr3 .
I hope the voice nav is so good that i don’t have to look to the screen.
In that case I put the phone in my pocket and juist listen with the earplugs.
Kind regards, Johan
I prefer 3 overall, or 1 with stipulations. The problem with time limited things is I don’t always get around to trying them out before the deadline, unless you do it for time used rather than time from install, then it would be OK. I also would prefer to pay one time – I’m very unlikely to sign up for repeated fees at all. If you went with 3 you could even offer a time-limited trial of the premium features (again, time used, not time from install). There are enough other mapping options that the Voice Nav and Offline Maps are the reason I would like this app (as well as the focus on motorcycles of course, and inputting routes). Depending on the fee you choose and how much more it is than the current fee, perhaps consider giving existing users a voucher or something to offset what they paid, or at least for those who bought within a certain time frame? I’m not a one (I’m waiting for Voice Nav), but it might make them more likely to upgrade and soothe ruffled feelings.
Thanks for all your input everyone. I really appreciate it. I’m looking into possibilities now to give the current MotoMap users the new app for free. Vouchers is not an option however (Apple doesn’t support that), but I’ll work it out.
Gil,
I would pay for this App! Thanks for the help this year and hope all is well with you and family.
One time payment would work for me.
Best to You
David
I’d be willing to pay for a premium version, but would definitely want a short testing period first.
