Portable waterproof CarPlay units for your motorcycle
Quote from 2BTSquared on 12.04.2023, 13:39Generally speaking... I don't do music, phone, etc. when riding. However, the wife and I may start doing some travel on the bike. That being the case, I can see some use for an intercom. The ability to take important phone calls and maybe hear navigation directions might be a useful bonus on a rare occasion. Music won't likely ever be a desire (I don't listen to music much anyway). I do listen to podcast but wonder if doing so would be too distracting while riding. Anyway... I've been playing around with the idea of getting some kind of intercom system.
One priority is hearing protection. I never ride without earplugs in. I've got a friend who uses Bose active noise cancelling earbuds. He says they work well for both audio and the hearing protection aspect. I've considered the Cardo/Sena options, but don't care for the idea of internal speakers in the helmet. Wind noise is an issue with either full face or half helmets (I wear both). Adding speakers seems to me would just compound the problem (making things louder/providing no hearing protection). For the half helmet, you would need wired earbuds anyway. BT Earbuds with active noise cancellation seems like it would check the boxes. With that in mind, I believe I'm going to check these out (Bonus, they are on sale at the moment for $98)...

Apparently, they've already addressed some of the needed improvements mentioned in that review.

So in addition to testing out the wireless CarPlay/Android Auto display unit this will be added to the fun. We'll see how well it all plays together.

Quote from Dae on 12.04.2023, 13:46I just use motorcycle specific custom moulded earplugs that have built in earphones. They plug into my Cardo via the 3.5mm jack that the Cardo has built in. They’re not generic, but done by an audiologist.
Lots of hearing damage is done by low frequency noise that you can’t actually hear. I’ve never been convinced that noise cancelling headphones would protect against this as their purpose is to get rid of the background noises that you can hear and give the impression of being in a quiet environment.
All my intercom conversations, music, nav instructions etc are crystal clear. I never got on with helmet speakers.

Quote from Guido on 12.04.2023, 14:30The Moticom looks like an interesting product. Interested in your experience.
Except for this Moticom I tried just about everything out there.
- Wired (in-ear) earbuds: Forgot the cable numerous times while getting of the bike, snapping my head back as I walked away from the bike 🙂
- Bluetooth (in-ear) earbuds: worked well if you don't need intercom function and if you can control volume and previous/next in some way (like in Scenic). Because they are in-ear they also give somewhat of hearing protection.
- AirPods Pro (with noise cancelation). Found it hard to get my helmet on or off without one or both dislodging (and falling on the ground).
- The moulded earplugs with integrated speakers (like @Dae). They were wired though, so had the same problem as above
- Riding without sound (only earplugs for protection)
Now I'm using a Cardo and, honestly, I think that's the best solution... for me at least: I always have sound if I want to, no cables in the way, no extra thing to take on or off when I stop, great battery life. And I can choose to wear my earplugs or not (I don't use earplugs for quick non-highway city rides). They are special motorcycle earplugs that do allow for the Cardo sound to get through, albeit with a bit more volume. It's an expensive solution... but if I would have invested in this from the start I probably would have saved money overall. Just my 2 cents 🙂

Quote from Dae on 12.04.2023, 14:46That’s why I like the wired custom ear plugs and the Cardo combo. You get proper protection, excellent quality audio, and because the Cardo is connected to the phone via Bluetooth you don’t get the head snap if you forget to unplug (the ear plugs connect to the Cardo on the helmet, not the phone on the bike).
I think the reason I never got on with the speakers in the helmet is because my ears never line up properly with the recesses in the helmet where the speakers go, regardless of which helmet I’ve used.
I also find that you don’t need the volume turned up so much with the custom ear plugs as they’re not fighting to get through the hearing protection, unlike speakers which are on the “wrong side” of the protection.
My wife has the opposite setup to me. She uses a Cardo but with the speakers in the helmet. She has custom moulded earplugs that don’t have any speakers built in, but they have a filter to allow conversations through whilst still blocking dangerous frequencies and volumes.

Quote from mattsz on 12.04.2023, 17:10How the heck do you guys get your full-face helmets on after inserting any kind of ear buds? There's no way I could do that with my Shoei RF1400 without yanking them from my ears. I wear foam ear plugs, I have to trim them short so they don't stick out of my ears at all - otherwise even they get pulled out when I don my helmet...

Quote from Guido on 12.04.2023, 17:40Pull the chin straps really hard sideways so that the foam cheackpads open up a bit. Indeed it can be quite difficult. Especially with the foam earplugs which are typically a bit larger.
I have these now: https://www.rideapart.com/reviews/598062/earpeace-moto-pro-earplugs-review/amp/
they are very small and fit completely in my ear (as far as I know I have medium to small ear canals). They have a small tab so that you can always pull them out safely.

Quote from mattsz on 12.04.2023, 18:35Thanks Guido! That's a reasonable price for good hearing protection that works well.
The new RF1400 boasts a quiet interior, they presumably got it by reducing the size of the opening. As a result, it's a challenge to don the helmet, even without anything sticking out of my ears. I don't see how I could ever do it with wired earbuds in my ears...

Quote from 2BTSquared on 13.04.2023, 10:24Various pro and cons come to mind with any solution.
I've never had much luck with custom molded hearing protection. If we were just talking hearing protection, I wouldn't bother with the hassle and expense of them (adding audio to the mix just seems to add to it). I'd just go with Hearos and be done with it. They are cheap, easy to come by, easy to use, all day comfortable, and very effective.
As I noted, whatever the solution, for me it needs to work well with both full face and half helmets. Sena/Cardo with wired earbuds plugged in (speakers are not an option)... Although doable on a half helmet, it seems less than desirable. Just the notion of slapping a Sena/Cardo on the side of a half helmet would seem to be a non-starter. I'd rather go with the neckband approach. One potential upside of the earbuds wired to the neckband... If an earbud pops out during a ride, it won't become lost to the ages.
Speakers in general... My thinking would tend to be more in line with @dae. Both full face and half helmets have their wind noise issues. Trying to overcome that - and seemingly necessary hearing protection - with volume seems to be less than ideal. Plus... one somewhat unique challenge that I have may make any solution other than the Hearos fail (particularly with a full face helmet) and that's the Nightster with V&H Sideshots. Overall, I'm inclined to lean towards some type of in-ear solution for hearing protection, sound fidelity, volume and power consumption reasons.
Some potential cons of this neckband solution that immediately come to mind... Earbuds can be hit or miss when it comes to comfort/fit. I won't know where these will fall until I try them. Another potential issue - as @mattsz mentioned - is getting a full-face helmet on with the buds in. I've had reusable earplugs that had similar issues with the full-face helmet. Generally, I've been able to spread the helmet enough by pulling on the straps - as @guidomm noted - to make it all work. Sure, it would be nice if one didn't have to contend with this. As @guidomm also noted, the neckband solution does add to the list of things you have to put on and take off. The jury is still out how much of an annoyance that will be. Mostly, I'd probably just wear them around all day - if I'm out and about or at a quick stop. Probably no different - or more noticeable - than my reading glasses or riding glasses on the top of my head.
I like the rechargeable aspect... But as with any device... What happens when the batteries finally give up the ghost? Paper weight?

Quote from Keep Moving on 14.04.2023, 17:43I've been using the EarPeace Original for about two years now. They work great, stay in the ears and really do cut the noise. I can still hear Scenic directions on my Cardo unit. I have a Nolan full face but don't loose the Ear Peace taking the helmet on or off. The Pro ones Guido mentions may be even better. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076VVV5WJ/ref=emc_b_5_t?th=1

I can only assume this is because I followed the recommendation of Maxca (to 'forget' my cardo in my phone's Bluetooth settings), see above as well. This is a bit of a nuisance because now I have to pair the Cardo to my phone temporarily every time I want to use it with the Cardo app and every time I want to use the Cardo with my phone, but without the Maxca (e.g. when I don't need navigation I don't need the Maxca for guidance, but I would like some music).I did experience some very short audio drops just when I left my house. I'm not too worried about this though, because this also happens in my car (also wireless CarPlay) when I drive away. I'm guessing that's because my home Wifi is going out of range as I drive/ride away... or something related to that.
Before this ride, I updated the maxca firmware to the newest version. This firmware did not have any changes regarding the connection, but it did enable a customizable start-up screen and more detailed volume settings.

To get the latest firmware version you have to send Maxca a message through AliExpress. There's no link anywhere. They are pretty fast to respond though.
One small annoyance I found, but hopefully this was a one time thing. Because I installed the new firmware I had to reconnect my phone to get CarPlay. The first time it was pretty easy:... find the Maxca in your bluetooth settings on your iPhone, then connect. And rest went automatic. It wasn't automatic this time though. Not sure it was because I changed the default bluetooth name of the maxca, or if there was still some left-over bluetooth config on my phone. After about 5 tries I finally got it working. Not exactly sure why, but I turned off the Maxca. Then 'forgot' the maxca in my iPhone bluetooth settings. Turned off my phone, waited 2 minutes and turned it back on again. Then I turned on the maxca. Found it in my iPhone bluetooth settings and connected to it. That time everything went OK and iPhone asked me if I wanted to use the maxca for CarPlay...etc.
Hey @guidomm... My experience so far with the Binize unit/Motikom MPlus seems to has pretty much been the same as yours. I had to forget the Motikom pairing on my phone. I did have some confusion with the pairing process, as I noted in a support email to Binize...
...The Motikom has 3 pairing modes - 1) Intercom pairing, 2) Phone Pairing and 3) Remote Control Pairing. What profiles are used in all that is anybody's guess. It's not really documented anywhere.Trying to pair with the Binize Unit (Settings/Bluetooth/Discover/Search) in any of the Motikoms MPlus pairing modes fails. Sometimes the Binize Unit will say that it is paired with the Motikom Mplus, but the Motikom MPlus will say that the pairing process failed. Sometimes the Motikcom MPlus will not do or say anything while attempting to pair with the Binize Unit. I do note the following in the Motikom MPlus documentation..."MPlus is capable of pairing with a third-party Bluetooth device
(e.g. BT headphones, BT intercom device or BT speaker).
However, the proprietary software of the third party BT device must be compatible with MPlus and have HFP profile."The Binzie Unit has the HFP profile, so I'm uncertain/curious as to why the above method for pairing fails.Alternatively, I've tried getting the Binize Unit and the Motikcom MPlus to connect via the Bluetooth Emit icon (Bluetooth Search) on the main page. The Motikcom MPlus comes up in the list on that page and I'm able to connect to it (with the Motikom in the Intercom pairing mode). Everything seems to work as expected this way except the maximum audio volume is too low. When the Motikcom MPlus is connected directly to my Pixel 5a phone, audio volume is no problem. The Motikcom will get plenty loud enough.I've reached out to Binize about the audio volume level being too low. I noted in your reply that the firmware update had some impact on volume. I wonder if this will fix my problem. I guess we'll find out. I've not seen anything in the documentation on how to do the firmware upgrade. What's the process?

Quote from Guido on 16.04.2023, 07:18I messaged Maxca through AliExpress for the new firmware. They sent the new firmware file to me and I could update by putting that on a SSD card that I inserted into the Maxca. Through the settings menu on the unit you can then initiate the update.
From sound perspective this added some more volume settings if I remember correctly (I.e. now I can set separate volume levels for music and navigation instructions). Honestly not sure if/how that works if using CarPlay. The volume is OK though for my Cardo. Note that I didn’t have any volume issues before the update either. Even before the update, O could increase volume on the Maxca settings (which I did have to turn to almost max to get same volume as I would get directly from iPhone).

Thanks for the firmware update tips @guidomm.
Your mention of CarPlay jostled loose a few brain cells. I had been testing/setting things up with my Android Pixel 5a. Other than making sure all the interfaces/pairing worked the same (they do), I didn't dig too far into it with my iPhone. But then I remembered that along with the Binize Unit's System and Navi volume controls, it also had a CarPlay volume control. Naturally the CarPlay volume control did nothing when I was using my Android phone. Then I recalled your previous post about the added volume controls via the firmware update - Android Auto volume being amongst them. Hmmm - wheels turned between the ears and I decided to look a little closer at things when using my iPhone and CarPlay. Sure enough the CarPlay volume control on the Binize unit controls/solves the volume problem. In fact CarPlay volume can be turned up too high on the Binize unit - causing it to produce distortion (regardless of the volume setting on the Motikom). Had to back it down a bit to clear that up. So... All in all... Problem solve-ed.
As to Android Auto. The Binize unit's System volume is the only thing that impacts the volume for Android Auto. Seeing that the new firmware adds an Android Auto volume control suggests that the firmware update may fix the problem with Android Auto.
So thanks Guido for getting the wheels turning.

Quote from 2BTSquared on 18.04.2023, 07:22So I've had a couple of interactions with Binize support on my Android Auto volume problem. Binize support response to me...
Hello
Thanks for your reply and sorry for my late response. After checking
with our tech support team and factory, I regret to inform you that
your headset may not be very compatible with our product. The lower
maximum volume after a successful connection should be due to the
multiple modes of the headset itself. You can try to connect your
phone or other devices in different modes to experiment with the
difference between the maximum volume. Actually, we recommend you use
AirPods to listen to music. My reply back to them...
Fortunately, I also have an iPhone. I've been able to get all devices - the Binize Unit, the Motikom Mplus and the iPhone - to work/play well together. They all pair and function as expected. So, no I don't believe there is a compatibility issue with the Motikom MPlus (re. headset) and the Binize Unit.As a reminder, I asked about firmware updates in my original email. The version that I have is EW_YFM_01-202211291221. An updated version is EW_YFM_01-202301311027 (I don't know if this is the latest or not).As to Android Auto and my Android phone... Everything also works with it - the Binize Unit, the Motikom Mplus and the Pixel 5a. They all pair and function as expected - with one exception. That exception being that there is no way currently to adjust the Android Auto volume (which is currently set too low to be useful). The current firmware version on the Binize Unit provides System volume, Navi volume and CarPlay volume. It doesn't provide Android Auto volume control. The new version of the firmware does...As can be seen in the attached image... The new firmware version provides Master, Navigation, CarPlay Media, CarPlay Telephone and Android Auto volume controls. When using my iPhone, I'm able to adjust CarPlay volume and everything works fine (all 3 devices - the Binize Unit, Motilkom MPlus and the iPhone - work nicely together). When using my Android phone, all devices work together as well - except that I can't adjust Android Auto volume (which is set too low). I believe the new firmware might solve this problem. You might be able to confirm this with your tech support team. Can you provide the updated firmware and procedure for installing it?Binize support response...Hello
Thanks for your reply and sorry for the late response due to the big time difference. And Thank you for your detailed email content and logical and clear expression of the problem. After we double-confirmed with the factory, version EW_YFM_01-202211291221 is the latest stable version. Newer beta versions may cause unpredictable problems, so it is not recommended to upgrade. Regarding the Android Auto volume prob, their reply is, “We also received feedback from other customers before, and there is currently no way to solve this problem”. As for the picture you attached, after confirmation, it is not our product. Maybe the UI looks the same, but it is not the same thing.I've seen this hardware being sold under different brand names Binize, Maxca, Wizcar, Ottocast, and Iorigin to name a few. This screen shot was from a no name brand being sold on Ebay...Interestingly, that settings page is identical (same versions etc.) to the one on my unit - which is a Binize. It's been an assumption that this is exactly the same product being sold under different brand names. However, perhaps the hardware is the same but there are different flavors of firmware/software depending on the brand. Or perhaps the hardware is different as well (I doubt it). They all look the same, right down to the box they come in appearing to be identical. So @guidomm do you recall the firmware version that you upgraded from? What did the GUI look like on your unit? Did it look like this?...

This is probably a long shot... But have your tried yours with Android Auto? If so, can you control Android Auto volume? Doubtful I know. You're probably pretty much iPhone and that's it.

Quote from 2BTSquared on 18.04.2023, 11:32Right now, I can get by using my work iPhone. So - as to the question about attempting the firmware from Maxca (see @guidomm reply) - I may hold that possibility in my back pocket for a bit. If the need for Android Auto becomes more critical - I may attempt the experiment. It's a gamble that the hardware is exactly the same (appears so - but maybe not). But what the hell? These units are pretty cheap and if I were to brick it with the Maxca firmware... Meh. Buy another one.
I'm going to keep trying to resolve the issue with Binize support. But if I haven't already hit a brick wall with them (likely), I'm guessing I'm about to do so soon.
In the interim... Anybody that comes along this thread... Posterity's sake and all... If Android Auto is a concern, one might want to consider the Maxca over the Binize. It appears Maxca's updated firmware provides the Android Auto volume control where the current firmware on the Binize (at least what they are willing to offer) does not. The updated firmware may solve the Android Auto volume problem - but I have no way of confirming.

Hello
Thanks for your reply and sorry for my late response. My friend, first of all, sorry for all the inconvenience caused by our
product, and please give me a chance to explain:Thank you very much for your feedback. We have noticed this problem
according to your feedback, and we have sent your problems to the
software development company already. I understand the lack of Android
auto-tuning is a real headache. Now we only have the latest firmware
file on November 29, 2022. EW_YFM_01-202211291221 like what we
mentioned before. Our suggestion is to wait until the software side
gives us the latest reply before we proceed to the next step. But if
you insist on trying an upgrade first, you can also try a refresh with
the same version. As you can see, there are many similar versions of the machines we
sell on the market. Although the appearance and some features look the
same, the reality is different. To tell you the truth, making the same
type of product must be a combination of many corresponding parts
developers, and not all the sellers of goods are the same developer.
It's like the phone is made by both Apple and Android.Sorry again for the inconvenience caused by our products, I will let
you know as soon as the factory has the latest updated documents. Thanks again.
Binize
There appears to be some language barrier issues etc. but they seem to be trying to imply that there may be differences under the hood... so-to-speak. I'm dubious about that and more inclined to bet that you are right.
Regardless, I'm in no hurry either way. They do seem to imply they are working on getting updated firmware. Right now, my work iPhone will suffice for my needs at the moment. Eventually, I do want to end up using my personal Android phone for these things, so I'll be looking for a solution somewhere down the road. I do have to say though, just satisfying my curiosity is almost enough to get me to risk it and try the firmware Guido provided.

Quote from jmossfeld on 23.04.2023, 09:19Hi all! I now have one of these generic units (the box says “Road Top”) from eBay. I can get Scenic to show up in CarPlay just fine, but the navigation voice only plays through the screen’s speaker, not through my Cardo headset. I did pair the Cardo unit, and it even shows up on the “paired” list of the screen’s Bluetooth settings, but there doesn’t seem to be an active connection. Anyone else have this issue and a possible solution? I’ve messaged the seller through eBay, but I do not have high hopes of a legible response.
FYI, although the included RAM-style mount looks solid, I already had a QuadLock mount on my bike (and one on my bicycle, for my phone), so I stuck one of QuadLock’s universal plates on the back of the screen bracket, and it seems to work fine. I can still easily swap out the screen for my phone if needed.

Make sure you have a motorcycle unit with 2 Bluetooth modules. The Cardo has to be paired in the "Transmit BT", "Bluetooth Emit" or "BT Helmet" menu, NOT in the normal system settings.

I was just getting ready to say this. If I paired mine via Settings/Bluetooth/Discover/Search it wouldn't work. I had to pair the Motikom (similar to Cardo) via the Bluetooth Emit icon (Bluetooth Search) on the main page.
Plus I was going to say, don't have the Cardo paired with your smartphone - but Guido already beat me to it.

Quote from jmossfeld on 23.04.2023, 15:10Thanks, using the “BT Emit” thing worked! I had tried it previously, but I gave up too soon —it took about a minute to find my com unit to make a connection. All is good now and I’m looking forward to riding the routes that I made in Scenic for the BMW MOA Grand Coddiwomple (even though I’m on a Versys instead of a Beemer).
I’ll try the same thing with a Bluetooth receiver that I have for my wired noise-cancelling earbuds. I like to switch between the Cardo helmet speakers and the earbuds just to mix things up for my ears.

Quote from 2BTSquared on 06.05.2023, 18:36So I've done the permanent install. Wired the power supply into the bikes switched accessories power via this kit...
Electrical Connection Update Kit
Routed harness to the right side of the bike and installed the power supply there...
Wiring routed up through the backbone of the frame and out the left side...
Display mounted. Phone resides in windshield bag with power routed to it from the USB port.
The red arrow points to a Chargie...
The Chargie manages battery charging and temperature. AFAIK there are generally two ways to get this kind of control... Software which requires rooting the phone and this hardware approach. The Chargie works pretty well for this task.
Overall I'm pretty pleased with this setup. The phone (battery/heat/cold/elements) won't get stressed and the CP/AA display works great. I've tried an intercom system with it. Everything pairs and works as expected. Some had mentioned that they don't like that the display unit doesn't have an internal battery to prevent power cycles/reboots when you start the bike etc. This has absolutely not been a problem. The display unit powers up and reconnects to everything within 30 seconds. If you had a Nav session going before shutdown (say stopping for gas), the route/navigation session is still there when the system reboots and reconnects.
The only nit that I've found so far (and mentioned previously) is that the BINIZE unit's firmware version doesn't yet have the Android Auto volume controls. Other "brands" have already provided the firmware update for that. Right now I'm using my iPhone, so it's not a problem. But sooner or later, I'll want to update the firmware.

Quote from Kilroy on 20.05.2023, 08:07Have there been any firmware updates since the one posted here? I am with a group of other Kawasaki Concours Owners who many have adopted the C5 unit, but occasionally have buggy issues that we are trying to resolve. The paring issues with some headsets seems to be the biggest issue. I have the Cardo Pack Talk Edge and so far that is working better than the Pack Talk Slim I had before, but it seems that the Bluetooth connectivity seems to not be great to the C5 unit itself creating some issues. Thanks for providing some information and more importantly access to the firmware updates! I have been a Scenic user for many years and depend on it for my long distance trips heavily.

Quote from Guido on 20.05.2023, 08:24I don’t know about any new firmware. The best thing you can do is write to info@maxcauto.com about your problem.
Dan is very good at responding. He only gives firmware to official Maxca buyers though, not any other brands.
I’ve had connection drops as well. Both dropping connection to my phone as well as my headset (Cardo Freecom 4x). Removing the Bluetooth pairing between my headset and phone (only leaving headset paired with the C5) seemed to help, but not 100%

I have not had a chance to try this yet.I’m sharing this so that everyone thinking of buying a unit can take this into account. I’ve not heard of anyone else having this specific problem. The voltages you mention are normal. I didn't look at the input specs on the power supply they provided, but I would imagine these normal operating voltages are well within the input specs of the supply. I would be surprised if either heat or vibe are an issue. You would think that this thing was designed for these environmental conditions. However, it's possible that one of both factors are in play here.
I've got mine installed on a '18 Harley Heritage 114. It's a Harley so it does produce some vibration. However, the new Softail M8s don't have the same shake, rattle and roll as older models. For example, the Heritage isn't nearly as entertaining in this regard as my '09 Nightster (rubber mounted 1200 EVO). So I can say that my installation may not experience the same challenging vibe profile as your 1 cylinder thumper may be producing.
So far though, I haven't had any issue with my unit. Then again, I have only had it out and about for a half dozen trips or so. Those trips ranging 2 to 3 hours a piece. It's still fairly cool here. I've probably only did one run so far in the mid 80's (F). I'll be keeping an eye on this thing to see if it gets fairly warm to the touch.
Do you have any stability issues running it off USB connected to a reliable source (phone power supply, computer, whatever)? Might test this thing in the heat connected this way to rule out heat. Maybe set it out in the sun on a table or something and see what it does. I might put it in the same orientation - in relation to the sun - as it might encounter (worst case) on the bike.
You might double check your wiring to make sure there are no intermittent opens. Bend it, shake it, move it, etc. everywhere along it's length (and especially anywhere there are crimps or solder connections) to make sure the connection remains intact.

Quote from Guido on 20.05.2023, 10:34You would think that this thing was designed for these environmental conditions.
I doubt it. After all, these are cheap Chinese units. They have to cut corners to make it this cheap. I.e. cheap electronics with lower temperature ratings, very limited testing, etc. Not saying that this would mean it's automatically bad, but overall I believe it's highly unlikely that they've tested in extreme environmental circumstances. E.g. they advertise it's IPX7 rated, which implies that the device is waterproof and that it can be fully submerged into 1-meter deep water for up to 30 minutes and still be able to work properly after that.
Having said that, it's very possible that it wan't heat, but the connection. Testing if it works through the USB connection and with another cable/power source was one of the diagnostics steps Maxca recommends me to do. I'm going to give that a try once I can. Unfortunately, I also broke my leg during the trip where my Maxca failed, so I'm a bit less mobile now to thoroughly try this. Will keep you posted here though once I get around to it.

Point well taken. I wouldn't doubt that no environmental testing was done. That kind of testing cost money. But, it seems some basic design practices to make these things viable for the application wouldn't have been too costly. In the end though, they may indeed prove to be cheaply built units that won't hold up. I'll certainly report in if I start having issues with mine.

problems found in this firmware:
- the "next track" button from the intercom doesn't work (interphone avant)
- voice commands on the interphone doesnt work
- when receive or make a call the interphone disconects, once you turn it off and on again it works normally (until the next restart of the maxca device)

The last day, when temperatures raising, I had several reboots and sometimes I can't connect to the Wifi of the Maxca. When selecting Wifi in the Setup screen and clicked the switch of Wifi the unit got frozen and I had to reboot it.
What I found out, the problem seemed, when the display is in direct sunlight, the "Maxca" reboots. We drove threw several tunnels, where temperature was lower, then the unit worked again, when leaving the tunnel and sunlight shined directly onto the display, it lasts seconds and it restarted.
When rotating the unit so that no sunlight shined on it, it worked without a problem.

This reminds me of https://www.alphr.com/raspberry-pi-2/1000375/why-a-camera-flash-will-reboot-your-raspberry-pi-2/ - maybe it’s a similar issue here. So shielding the unit from the sun should be sufficient.

Quote from Guido on 27.06.2023, 11:30That's very interesting. So, what you're saying is that it's possible that it's not the heat from the sunlight, but the sunlight itself causing the rebooting? My theory is, fact is all displays are getting hot after a while, now, when direct sunlight touches the display it makes the temperature grow up even higher and the electronics in the Maxca collapses.
Just a theory, I will make more tests and report my experiences.

I guess if I had any concern about these units, it's whether they will be properly supported as time goes on. I can say that I've yet to see BINIZE provide a firmware update. My unit is still on EW_YFM_01-202211291221. The only issue that I've had with that firmware is that it doesn't provide a separate Android Auto volume control. It does, however, have a separate CarPlay volume control (thankfully).
My needs have yet to compel me to try the firmware version that Guido has provided. I'm still using my work iPhone for my needs - so currently what I have works for me.
I've noted the conversation about potential heat/sun issues causing shutdowns. I haven't had any issues with the unit powering off etc. It has been working fine for me. I've ridden with it on a handful of summer days and I've had no problems. I wonder if the display angle in relation to the sun has caused part of the problem. I wonder if something simple as just changing the angle a bit so it's not directly facing the sun may improve things. Meh... Who knows?... Just a thought.
Anyway... I'll report back if I encounter this issue.

Best way to stay up to date I believe is their Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/MAXCARADIO

Quote from Stuffa on 28.07.2023, 17:07I really can’t see any advantage in buying one of these units. About 10 years ago I had a Garmin unit and had nothing but problems and the support from Garmin in Australia was absolutely terrible. In the end I threw the Garmin in the bin and have been using my iPhone and Scenic ever since. Maybe if a better quality unit comes out with a bigger screen I might consider. If I did buy one of these I would still have to have my phone connected to power so I don’t see the point as my iPhone works perfectly with Scenic

Quote from Guido on 28.07.2023, 17:19To me personally, the advantage of such a unit is that
- the screen is better readable in the sun
- it's (a lot) cheaper if it gets stolen or damaged through vibration (cameras in the newer iPhones can get damaged by the vibrations although there are other solutions for that like vibration dampers)
- iPhones tend to overheat in warmer climates while constantly in the sun and GPS app running all the time. As a protection, iOS automatically dims the screen significantly, making it even harder (sometimes impossible) to read. Or if it's really overheated, the iPhone will shut down completely to protect itself.
Having said that, I fully agree that these Chinese units are not up for the task yet. As you can read above, I had overheating problems with this unit as well, and I'm experiencing connection drops every now and then. Only a matter of time before better / higher quality units will hit the market though I'm sure.

And the display unit is said to be waterproof. Also, you can leave it on the bike permanently and keep your phone in your pocket for short rides.
