Portable waterproof CarPlay units for your motorcycle

I paired the WunderLINQ with my phone and enabled the WunderLINQ option in Scenic. I also installed the WunderLINQ app on my phone. I then launched Scenic on CarPlay. When I scroll the Wonderwheel the map doesn’t zoom in and out on the CarPlay screen.
I looked into this and I managed to get this working. It will be available in the next update v3.58. It's a bit of a hack though, and it has a disadvantage: Your iPhone can not be locked. It has to be unlocked and on this screen:
I've made sure that your iPhone does not auto-lock when on this screen while a handlebar controller is connected.
Here is some background if you are interested:
Why is this necessary? Well, Scenic 3.5 sees handlebar controllers as external Bluetooth keyboards and responds to certain "key presses". However, external keyboard presses don't arrive on Apple CarPlay. Apple is preventing this. (probably not intentionally, but just because it would be pretty weird to enter text on CarPlay with a Bluetooth keyboard). The key presses do arrive on the iPhone, though, and so I "catch" the keyboard presses with the screen above (as if you were entering text on this screen) and then tell the map on the CarPlay screen to zoom in/out.
So why is this different from Scenic 3.19? To support more types of handlebar controllers in Scenic 3.5! I changed the Bluetooth handling to a more universal setup. 3.19 was reading the raw Bluetooth signals from a connected Bluetooth device (not interpreting them as keyboard key presses), and so, these did get through to CarPlay. The problem with that approach is that the signals are specific for every handlebar controller type, so a separate piece of code would be necessary for each handlebar controller type.
Seeing handlebar controllers as an external keyboard is a much more accepted and universal way, which cleared the way for other handlebar controllers to work with Scenic too. (https://scenic.app/help/handlebar-controllers/) Even when you connect an actual bluetooth keyboard to your iPhone, it can control Scenic (arrow buttons, return and escape buttons, and + and - buttons) now.
I put the WunderLINQ back on at the weekend and it seems to work perfectly for zooming in/out (when I remember to leave Scenic on the “CarPlay” screen and not hit the power button on the phone, which is muscle memory).
My only minor pain point is that sometimes I leave CarPlay on the map without hitting “start ride”. When there’s no active ride the phone doesn’t show the “CarPlay” screen in Scenic and so it then locks. This means if I finish a ride to start a new one I have to be quick before the phone locks itself again (which I’m usually too slow to do and realise that the phone is locked when WunderLINQ zoom stops working).
Appreciate the quick fix to get WunderLINQ zoom working with CarPlay though, even if it is dependent on me leaving the phone in the correct screen.

If you are on another screen then it will auto-lock, though.
Were you perhaps on another screen? Or did not have Scenic in foreground at all?

Quote from Dae on 18.04.2024, 12:05It’s entirely possible I caught the screen when putting the phone in/out of the tank bag.
It’s great that the WunderLINQ works when the phone displays “CarPlay”. I’ll have to get used to it not working until I hit start ride (it didn’t work when just in the map screen, which I sometimes do when just riding around).

Cool. There’s a typo in the word “keyboard” though.
“because CarPlay is not listening to these bluetooth keybaord signals. Probably not intentionally”

My question is this:
Does this also mean that the up and down buttons operate the ... and panning button if + and - are not displayed? I'm only asking because then left and right could also work with the arrows displayed in the panning screen.
I'm currently tinkering with the 4-button remote and would still make 4 buttons instead of 2.Incidentally, I have rarely been so willing to pay a subscription for an app as I am for Scenic. Keep up the good work

Unfortunately not. Scenic is not actually "tapping" those button virtually. It just tells the map to zoom in and out. CarPlay is not aware of this. I can't operate the CarPlay template buttons from Scenic.
I might be able to toggle panning mode from code. If so, I could also make the remote "arrow" buttons work to pan the map. I'll add this to the list to check out.

I’m not sure I am understanding how this works. So for this to work the phone would be connected to the WunderLINQ attached to the nav cradle and scenic running on a separate CarPlay unit or can I connect the CarPlay unit to the WunderLINQ and run scenic on the CarPlay unit while my phone unlocked?

Quote from Guido on 24.05.2024, 21:06Your WunderLINQ can’t connect to the CarPlay unit. It needs to be Bluetoothed to your phone. Then Scenic (on your phone) gets signals from the wunderLINQ as you use the multicontroller (the wheel) on your handlebar. Then Scenic tells the map that’s displayed on the CarPlay screen what to do.

One thing to be aware of is that the Chigee remote is always listening, so even if you set the bike so the wheel operates the Nav, the Chigee would still act on the left/right wheel movements.
It isn’t an issue for zooming in and out as the Chigee has no concept of the wheel up/down, but if you implement left/right the map would pan and also the Chigee would move the focus between the clickable elements on its screen at the same time.
You could have a similar issue with holding the wheel left/right for a “long press” - this tells the Chigee to change between CarPlay, main menu, camera screen etc.
It is one of the frustrating things about the Chigee, as it means that when you use the wheel to do things like reset the trip computer the Chigee starts reacting to the wheel movements at the same time.
There’s no way to use the wheel without the Chigee listening, except up/down as it doesn’t support that function so ignores it. That’s why using it for zoom is working out brilliantly for me. I can’t believe how much more useable it’s made the Chigee.

I find that often the phone displays the Scenic CarPlay screen but it’s like it doesn’t have focus, so the WunderLINQ zoom doesn’t work, and if I tap the screen it starts working again.
It’s usually things like starting/stopping music in CarPlay or using Siri to do something that makes the phone take focus away from the Scenic CarPlay screen.

Quote from Guido on 01.06.2024, 09:47For scroll to work with WunderLINQ you zoom also needs to be set to "manual": https://scenic.app/help/speed-based-and-turn-based-zoom/
Perhaps that's the problem?Or am I misunderstanding? If so, please could you give me a bit more information on what's happening? What you expect to happen and what is actually happening?

The recommended firmware for the "C5 Lite" models is from 25 October 2023 (via brand RICOEL), whereas the one for the "C5 Pro" models is the latest MAXCA one from June 2024.
The "Lite" models' firmwares can be recognised by being around 70-75 MB in size while the firmwares for the "Pro" models are 100-110 MB. Only the "Pro" models seem to support routing CarPlay audio via the phone instead of via the CarPlay device.

I don't think it will fit in the dashboard like the Capuride, but I'm over that now. I actually wired in a SECOND GPS cradle so I could use the WunderLinq, but I might even avoid that with the Chigee. It won't be so hard to reach as the dashboard location. But we shall see.
