Scenic 4: Seeing the world anew

Take more control

We recently announced the latest evolution for the Scenic navigation suite, Scenic 4, which will be arriving in the App Store on October 1st. Our latest iteration of Scenic was made possible by partnering with a new map provider whose values are more aligned with our community.

We are now incredibly excited to share the newest features and improvements that will transform your experience with Scenic and allow you to take more control over your adventures.

What does this mean for you?

In short, our new partnership will unlock many of the features that our customers have always wanted and deserved as well as some welcome surprises. Here’s a taste of those features:

Updated user interface

UI has always been a major priority for Scenic and we have previously used your feedback to make incremental improvements, but with the launch of Scenic 4 we wanted to address your larger suggestions. We’ve improved our interface from top to bottom, retaining the features you love and fixing the ones you don’t. The new UI is more intuitive and will create a cascading effect that streamlines the integration of future suggestions, allowing us to get better, faster.

Meticulous mapping

Our new map provider is empowering us to provide you with maps of much greater detail without compromising on clarity. And later on you’ll be able to customize colors, font sizes, road widths, and zoom levels for individual elements to view your routes your way.

Street View/Lookaround

Many of you like to not only know where you’re going but what awaits you there too. Satellites can only get you so far though and with Street View, you can seamlessly pull up on-the-ground images for any location on your route.

Color me excited

Powerful new customization options allow you to designate unique colors for each route, ride, location, and POI group for easy identification.

Telling your story

Scenic 4 gives you a clearer, more comprehensive view of your riding statistics, using accessible charts to chronicle your whole journey with us from your first adventure to your latest.

Powerful new routing options

Scenic 4 offers many new routing criteria that let you craft rides, drives, and even hikes to your personal vision.

Total global coverage

HERE could not provide map support for large swathes of Central and East Asia as well as a few other countries. Scenic 4 will have complete global coverage with every region available for offline map download through an all-new support system. Simply tap on a region and carry it with you, wherever you are.

Supercharged Power Planner

Our Power Planner is one of our most beloved features and with Scenic 4, you’ll be able to use it from anywhere in the app. For the first time, you’ll be able to create one-off routes and mid-navigation route changes using the power planner too.

The road ahead

The legendary Dutch soccer player Johan Cruyf used to say “Every advantage has its disadvantage” and Scenic 4 currently has some limitations, which we’ll be addressing over the coming months. In the meantime, here are a few reminders to help you have a smoother transition:

Secure your offline maps

When you switch to Scenic 4, your existing offline HERE maps will no longer be supported so you’ll have to download your offline maps again.

Check your routes

Since our new map framework uses different maps and a new routing algorithm, your previously created routes may be altered in Scenic 4. So, before you set out on a trip using one of these Scenic 3 routes, double-check that it still looks the same in Scenic 4.

No 3D mode (yet)

Our new map provider doesn’t support 3D mode yet so you won’t have access to the 3D perspective map immediately after making the switch. The map will use a 2D top-down perspective until our provider can integrate the new 3D mode.

Safety camera warnings

One of the most popular features we added in Scenic 3.5 was our integrated safety camera warnings. Although HERE had those integrated, we’re now working directly with a 3rd party provider to embed those into Scenic 4, and we are close: They will be available before the 2025 riding season starts.

For our European members, there’s an added bonus because we’re now introducing this feature in Germany and Switzerland, which wasn’t possible with HERE.

Road closures and traffic warnings

We’ve had road closures and traffic data since Scenic 3, however we’ve not been able to fully integrate those insights into live route calculations. We are now solving that problem but we need a little more time to develop a solution with our 3rd party provider.

How to switch to Scenic 4

When you open Scenic on or after October 1st, you’ll receive a message prompting you to update to Scenic 4 in the App Store, available on devices running iOS 16.4 and up. In the next few weeks, we’ll be releasing more information on our continued journey, so stay tuned, and thank you for making us a part of your adventures.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, you can check the comments below, the Scenic 4 announcement article and the comments there, you can check the forum, and reach us through the help page.

The reason why i don‘t use Scenic at the moment is the number of automatically created waypoints when i create curvy roads. This ist very annoying when i want change the waypoints. Other systems (calimoto) working without so many waypoints. Is this in Scenic 4 Stoiber the same?

    • Guido says:

Still the same in Scenic 4. Might change in the future. Why do you think the via points are anoying? It is just because they are displayed on the map? They do allow for a more flexible detour behaviour.

      • Pedro says:

        I have the same.
        I feel with you Stefan.

let’s say i want to start at my current position. And i put two way point’s to direct me home. Then I see it is not curvy enough…
Using the Power planer ore calculating the route with a lots of curs i get a ton of way points, If I see a loop ore something is wrong, To change that it takes me longer then to restart the calculating the route again.

I, also had to use Calimoto to get a faster planing and geting back.

  • Kev450 says:

    Looking forward to this!!! 😀

  • phlyter says:

The Power Planner is incredibly useful. My friends are consistently blown away with the routes I’ve created for us. I’m really excited to see the super-charged version…creating mid-nav route changes is HUGE!

    Kudos, Guido!

  • Guenter says:

Does Scenic 4 Support CarPlay as well?

    • Guido says:

Working hard on CarPlay. Hoping to have it ready on October 1st. If not, it will be a week or two later.

      • Bruce Walker says:

This is good to know. CarPlay integration is a must-have for me. I love that you are making Scenic better even if we have to endure some growing pains in the process. – Bruce

I have the Yamaha Tracer 9GT+ where I can only use the Garmin Motorize app via the Yamaha Myride link. In addition to Scenic, I am also a fan of Garmin, but this app is worthless. Is there a chance that Scenic can also be used via the Yamaha Myride link? That would be nice

  • Angela Cook says:

I’m excited about the color options. Hopefully this allows us to show our convertible rides in one color and our ebike rides in another on the map.

  • Wolfgang says:

  • Anonymous says:

who is the new card provider?

  • Vince says:

Can’t wait Guido. I’m using scenic most of the time for moto ride planning. I appreciate your quick responses when I send questions also. V

  • Lonnie Hotard says:

Power planner in the web app?

  • Steffen! says:

  • Matt says:

Voice commands. Scenic works well with CarPlay for displaying but simple voice where to requires a different app. Would be great if simple boice commands were added that work with Siri.

  • Mark says:

Is it possible to stick with Scenic 3 after October 1st? I am heading to the Picos de Europa on October 9th and was relying on CarPlay to use with my Chigee AIO-5 along with my custom map colours. If these will not available yet in Scenic 4 I am going to be totally screwed.

    • Guido says:

I am not 100% sure you will be able to use Scenic 3 after October 1st. The contract with HERE ends on October 1st. While using offline I don’t expect any problems as the HERE servers can’t be contacted, but I can’t try this beforehand.
In any case, make sure to update Scenic to v3.66 before your trip (if not already done so). And then turn off automatic updates in iOS Settings (otherwise it will automatically update to v4 on October 1st).
I know this is not the answer you are looking for, but unfortunately its not possible to have a reliable overlap. Later this year I will release an article where I explain the reasons behind this, and why the change is so abrupt. For now, all I can say is that I’m sorry about this. I truly wish it was different.
      Best, Guido

      • Mark says:

Thanks Guido. I will do exactly what you have suggested and hope I can continue using Scenic for my trip. I do have a fall back plan of using MyRouteApp (which I have been using for years), but I’d much rather use Scenic if possible.

  • Christian Wasmer says:

Can’t wait….until it has 3D ! I hade my SCENIC accidentally in 2D mode and could not find a setting (until I adjust the “camera angle” , and I was desperate not to see forward in the 3d mode ! This is absolutely a must for me, so I will stick to your already excellent Scenic III. But definitely lookin forward to SCENIC IV with 3D !

  • Jade says:

Thank you for a great app.
I’d love to see a desktop power planner version that can then be transferred onto my mobile device, is this possible?

  • Jade says:

Thank you for a great app, is it possible to provide a destktop power planner option that i can then transfer created routes onto my mobile device?

  • Albert says:

It would be very useful to be able to visualize the route made with 3d and with animation like the relive app.

    • Guido says:

That’s on the feature request list, but currently things with higher priority takes preference. Won’t be forgotten though.

  • MotoCon says:

I suppose the Android version is thrown off for now, considering the probably hasty changes in priorities needed for the new map provider?

  • Alexander Morre says:

who is the new card provider?

  • Rahul says:

    Hi Guido,

I have been a member on ios for quite a while but have now moved to Android. Just curious if this big release will also bring out the long awaited android app as well.

P.S. I tried to register for pre-release but it looks like there is a long que for that.

    Thanks,
    Rahul

  • Wouter T'Jaeckx says:

I was missing the apple carplay function, but I noticed in the FAQ this will be added later.

Just wanted to say the app is fantastic and I’m looking forward to an even better version 4.

Also, a lot of developers can take note about the clear and honest way you communicate.

Thank you and I hope the app can continue to improve!

  • Berthold says:

Hey Guido, I might have missed some. Is the power button included somewhere else in the menu ?

  • Bas says:

I love scenic, great app! Unfortunately I got 2 app crashes today and it was very difficult to get it to work as what I’m used to. For example, after the app crash I didn’t get any turn by turn directions anymore. Only the pink colored road.
Routes also like to take a lot of time, like I’m on my bike. A route of 100km takes 4hrs. The default is my motorbike. Are this instability things specifically for the new version that will be resolved later?
Still, love your app and using it for a long time already!

  • Timo says:

    Hey Guido,

  • Clark says:

Trying to figure out how to convert my “recorded rides” into a route??

  • Christophe Lequet says:

Hi Guido, the visual effect of the new Scenic 4 is fantastic. Great job. I was a great fan of the Power Planner feature where I could make route between saved locations. In the new plan version I can not see my locations on the map, is there a way to see them and make routes between or on the way to a destination?
    In advance thank you
    Christophe

  • Jeremy Rundell says:

Hi Guido love the app. Is there a setting to set the view to satellite on Scenic 4? Satellite view helps a lot when planning a route off-road to see if I’m going through forest or farmland or whatever. Thanks again for your app. Jez
