Scenic 4 is coming

Scenic 4 is coming

I’m thrilled to announce that Scenic 4 will launch on the App Store on October 1st. Scenic 4 is not just another update; it will let you take more control over your riding experience than ever before. I’ll reveal the new features and other improvements that Scenic 4 will bring in a future message, but for now, let’s talk about why we’re making these changes.

Your needs, our priority

We want the best for our users and that means empowering them with accurate, detailed maps, reliable routing options, and avoiding unwanted surprises. Around three years ago, Scenic switched to HERE maps, which served our adventurous community well. However, after two years of excellent service, HERE released a new mapping framework with changes to map styles and other elements that negatively impacted the community.

Since the switch, you’ve consistently reported a lack of map detail, counterintuitive route suggestions, and unexpected route alterations.

We’ve heard your concerns and appealed to HERE for feature request changes to address these challenges, specifically for motorcyclists and our other adventurers. But HERE’s focus has shifted to logistics and big automotive clients, and the needs of our close community were either not prioritized or were denied altogether.

We have now found a map partner that can answer each of these concerns as well as offer new features that will uniquely improve your Scenic experience, giving you more freedom to adventure your way. However, we couldn’t have made this leap forward without your input, and over the coming months, we want to hear your ideas on how to make Scenic work better for you and make it the best app it can be.

Meanwhile, we released more details on the new features being introduced and the initial limitations of Scenic 4, and before the launch, we’ll provide more info on what you can do to get involved and how we can craft the future of our community together. Thank you for joining us on the next stage of the Scenic adventure.

Check the comments below for frequently asked questions and answers. If you still have questions or concerns after that, you can leave another comment or reach us through the help page, and/or keep an eye on our social channels in the next few weeks (links at the bottom of the page).

What will happen to those of us who have.a paid subscription?

    • Guido says:

Nothing really. You will keep your subscription. Scenic 4 is a big update and will become available as any normal update through the App Store.

  • Neil Collins says:

The feature I really want is to stitch recorded routes into “Trips” to show entire journeys. Hopefully this is coming!!! 🙂

  • Chris Kruger says:

Thanks Guido! I love this app. In my life I have paid for a total 3 apps. All others I’m fine with the free. I support you with my small annual subscription gladly. You take the MC rider into account and have been helpful to me when I had questions. I love the app. Can’t say anything but good stuff.

    Thanks Again

  • Robert Knight says:

I am on a trip to Africa at the moment, on 1st October it won’t be easy to find good internet to download all my maps again. Why can’t you have an overlap so I can download maps when I am able to?

    • Guido says:

It’s not only the offline maps, but also the update to Scenic 4 through the app store. I’ll see if I can add an overlap, but you will need to update Scenic (through the App Store) one more time (probably next week) for this to be enabled.

      • TGC says:

I second the concern about the 3.66 app stopping working on Oct 1 until we update to v4. I too will be on a multi-week trip during this time, using Scenic largely offline, and would be seriously impacted if Scenic ceased working mid trip due to a coded kill date. Please allow existing app to at least fallback to offline operation only if used after Oct 1 if possible. Thank you.

      • Guido says:

        Hi TGC and Robert,
I am not 100% sure you will be able to use Scenic 3 after October 1st. The contract with HERE ends on October 1st. While using offline I don’t expect any problems as the HERE servers can’t be contacted, but I can’t try this beforehand.
In any case, make sure to update Scenic to v3.66 before your trip (already available). And then turn off automatic updates in iOS Settings (otherwise it will automatically update to v4 on October 1st).
I know this is not the answer you are looking for, but unfortunately its not possible to have a reliable overlap. Later this year I will release an article where I explain the reasons behind this, and why the change is so abrupt. For now, all I can say is that I’m sorry about this. I truly wish it was different.
        Best, Guido

  • Matt says:

I presume paid subscribers won’t be required to pay again? And when you say Scenic will stop working on October 1, what exactly does that mean? Will saved routes or trips be affected?

    • Guido says:

You presume correct. Your subscription will stay the same. Scenic 4 is a big update and will become available as any normal update through the App Store. Stop working means you’ll get a notification in the app asking you to update through the App Store. All your routes, rides, etc. will stay in tact, although you might want to double check your routes before taking off on a ride.

  • Rolf Kayser says:

I‘m also a little bit concerned about what will happen to the maps and routes on my device. When will we get informations about the changes we have to do?
I‘m on Tour in the second week of Oct. Is it possible to use the already planned rides?
    Regards Rolf
    P.S.
SCENIC is one of the most useful tools in Navigation!

    • Guido says:

All your routes, rides, etc. will stay in tact, although you might want to double check your routes before taking off on a ride. And you’ll need to re-download your offline map regions.

  • Veronica says:

Will the subscription price increase with this update?

    • Guido says:

Subscription price will stay as is. Even it changes at some point in the future, I’ve always kep existing subscribers at their old price. For example, someone who subscribed 5 years ago for, let’s say $25 USD / year, is still paying $25 USD per year now as long as their subscription auto-renews.

      • Anders Isaksen says:

This sounds great just wish more app makers had the same attitude you have towards old customers who have paid and supported the development of thier apps and give back by not raising the price for old customers.
I have been paying for the app since many years back and have seen how it has only gotten better and better and always received quick responses when I’ve had any questions or had problems that were quickly fixed.
Keep up the good work Guido!

  • Thomas says:

Great news! I’m really looking forward to this big update! Two questions:
    1. will there be an option to choose different types of routing between waypoints? As far as I remember, this was not possible with HERE.
    2. will version 4 get the long awaited Android app?
Thank you for your amazing work!

    • Guido says:

      1. No. At this moment the new provider does not support multiple routing modes either, but this will be added in the future, I just don’t know when at this moment.
      2. Yes

  • Ace Hanson says:

How will this update affect the early purchasers that bought the lifetime purchase? Thanks

    • Guido says:

Not. They will remain Premium Forever.

      • Ace Hanson says:

Thanks 🙏!! I love the program!!

      • MartinW says:

        🙏 👍🏻

      • MartinW says:

“When you open Scenic on or after October 1st, you’ll receive a message prompting you to update to Scenic 4 in the App Store, available on devices running iOS 16.4 and up.”
My iPhone ist running under iOS 15.8.3. Does this mean, that I can’t update to senic 4 ?

      • Guido says:

I’m afraid so. I try to make Scenic support as much devices as possible, but to make use of new iOS features and new and more efficient programming techniques, I have to bump up the minimum supported iOS version every now and then. For Scenic 4, this is iOS16.4. This means that Scenic can run on iPhone 8 and newer. Here’s more info on the minimum support iOS version per device: https://iosref.com/ios

      • Mat Hammond says:

This is the answer I was looking for..! 👍

  • John Beamer says:

Guido, thank you for continuing to improve what I believe to be the best motorcycle routing app available!

I look forward to seeing what you have in store for us, and I have every confidence that whatever it is will be amazing!

    John

Thanks for continuing to develop what is already the premier app for motorcycle navigation. You are a mindful developer and the attention you give to your end users is second to none. I am proud to be a paid premium member. I am looking forward to seeing all that Scenic 4 is going to be bringing us.

Cheers and keep up the excellent work!

  • Middelfrangge says:

    Hi Guido,

you wrote that the current version will not work anymore…..really? What to do if that is during a tour? I will be on vacation with my motorbike and means the last week I cannot use my navigation with Scenic. Is thee a Beta Version which I can use to upload my routes and test them?

    Regards
    Thomas

    • Guido says:

      Hi Thomas,
I am not 100% sure you will be able to use Scenic 3 after October 1st. The contract with HERE ends on October 1st. While using offline I don’t expect any problems as the HERE servers can’t be contacted, but I can’t try this beforehand.

    • Guido says:

You don’t need to upload your routes. Scenic 4 is an update through the App Store as any regular update. Your data (routes, rides, locations, poi groups, vehicles) will be available in Scenic 4 too. The only thing I recommend is to check your route before you go out on a ride, as the new routing engine might calculate different roads between waypoints.

    • Guido says:

One more reply. You say that you cannot use navigation with Scenic in the last week of your trip. You can, but you’d be navigating with Scenic 4. It’s true that you do need an internet connection to update to Scenic 4 and to re-download your offline maps.

      • Middelfrangge says:

        Hi Guido,

I will try, I am just afraid that it takes too much time to adjust everything again, on the other hand I am really looking forward to see and test the new features. I will take my Garmin with me as backup……not preferred but I definitely need a backup in that case.

        Regards
        Thomas

  • Arthur Broadhurst says:

Thanks Guido for the “ heads up”.
Scenic is my “ go to” app when route planning and look forward to see what the new version brings. I’m sure it’s a fine line trying to please everyone.
    Best wishes

  • Gerry says:

    Hey Guido.!

Will we still be able to customize the look of the map like before? Colours, size of roadways, size of road names?
    I really enjoyed that feature.

    Thank you.

    • Guido says:

Not from the start, but it will be re-added soon. The default map styles of the new provider are a lot better (better to see in sunlight, and more detail) than the ones from HERE.

  • Mathias says:

    Hello Guido,

I’m looking forward to the update and the long-awaited features.
I appreciate your work and your efforts to make your app better and better.

Hi Guido, I think the answer will be Yes, but the ability to save a route as GPX and run on a Garmin Zumo XT should be unaffected ?
    Thanks for your efforts.

  • Eduardo says:

    Hello Guido,

Is there going to be a feature like crash detection in the new update?

    Would be a great addition!

  • Jan says:

    Hi Guido,

Thank you for you always keeping up the great work.
You for sure created the most useful motorcycle navigation app on the market.

Very keen on experiencing Scenic 4.
    Kind regards,
    Jan

  • Jeroen says:

    Hoi Guido,

Will it be possible to change a route while riding the route just by moving via points.

Ready looking forward to Senic 4.

  • Dieter says:

    Hallo,

  • Mark Smith says:

Fuel stop planning based on tank range ?

    • Guido says:

Not from the start but it is on the list. Scenic 4 will have a new button in the navigation menu that immediately shows you gas stations along the route.

  • Robert says:

    Hallo Guide

EN: Scenic 4 won’t have traffic data from the start, but it will be re-added later again (before 2025 riding season),(Vor der Fahrsaison 2025), including taking traffic into account in the route calculation.

Hola Guido, ¿afecta esta actualización al CarPlay? ¿Seguirá funcionando como siempre?

    Gracias y buen trabajo

  • Ross says:

Love the app! Can I update earlier to test it out? Also – would be great if there was a quick “route reverse navigate” for out and back rides to navigate back easily. Also if there was a “skip waypoint” option during a drive to allow continuing to the next waypoint without circling back first.

    • Guido says:

Hi Ross. I already have enough beta testers, unless you would like access for a specific reason (on a multi day trip on October 1st).

Route reversing always requires a thorough check, as waypoints in one-way streets or on one side of a road with separated halves (like highways) can cause loops. That’s why this function is only available in the power planner.

The skip waypoint button is already available now and will also be available in Scenic 4. Check Settings > Navigation & Tracking > Skip waypoint button on map.
      Cheers, Guido

  • AshevilleCruz’N says:

Guido, thanks for always evolving this fantastic APP! Although HERE worked well with some issues, they sure took forever to correct their map issues. I’ve had a couple issues with roads in WNC and I know it was like talking to a wall with nothing resolved for over a year. Glad you’re able to show them the door! Fingers crossed on your replacement map provider! Thanks for all you and your team does. 🙏

  • Majvol says:

    Hi Guido,
    – Is the new SNC4 will be open to add a thumb up or thumb down and “v” biker sign (a stars rate like) during a trip to let know to other bikers the state of a road portion (as bad, good, good and fun) a small database events oriented for riders.
    – That could be nice if you could integrate a system to visualize and share videos of the tracking on a map as Relive. (or a partnership with ttem !) 😉

    • Guido says:

Not form the start, but the “thumbs up thumbs down” is high on the feature request list. The other one lower on the list.

  • Anonymous says:

Will there be a way to be warned about construction sites, traffic jams and accidents?

Will there be a way to be warned about construction sites, traffic jams and accidents?

  • Dan T. says:

Hi Guido, Hanging in for v4. Never really cared for the HERE map experience in my world travels. Looking forward to Oct 1st! Respect for the lone developer.

    Cheers,

  • Gerson says:

Any possibility of opening for life subscription again? I know you mentioned at the beginning of the year that you might possibly be doing that. Just checking to see if that is still happening.

The app is great thought I have definitely learned to use it a lot better in the last year.

  • Bill says:

Guido, after using basecamp for years and converting to scenic for route planning is awesome and so quick. Thank you for you continued attention to the detail and address the concerns from the membership.

  • Anthony says:

Hi Guido – thanks for doing what you do, will the provider change help with the battery consumption issues experienced with the HERE maps?

  • Chris Fraschetti says:

Hey Guido! As you know I love the app! Best one by far!! Any word on seeing friends on the map yet? Will Scenic 4 be able to do that? Just curious. Thank you! Take care. ❤️

  • Laurent Cartier says:

    Hello
I’m a fan user of scenic, thks Guido.
Who is the new maps provider?

  • Greg Wood says:

Will there be a change to the companion desktop application? I build my routes on Mac, which is a GREAT experience, and then use them on the iOS app. I must mention that I have used and paid for several apps (Rever, Detecht, InRoute, and others) and NONE of them compare to the features, functions and usability of Scenic. You have a great platform here and I appreciate your continued development, and your accessibility as the developer who asks for input to improve. Well done, sir.

  • Victor Buchanan says:

I have planned a route for a trip through France using v3 for mid-October. Will that still work on v4? Thanks Guido

    • Guido says:

The route will be available, but I recommend checking it once Scenic 4 is out, to make sure it’s still taking the same roads between your waypoints.

  • John says:

Most of my riding with Scenic is exploration, which I realize is probably quite different from the majority of your users, but if I could have one wishlist item it would be to be able to have a button on the main screen to drop a marker (maybe a magnifying glass?) to remind me to investigate an area later on when I review the map.

Love the app. Tried 4 or 5 others, and dropped them all when I found scenic. As a developer myself, much respect (and maybe a little jealoust :] ) for all you do by yourself.

    • Guido says:

Thanks John. Appreciate it. A “mark position on map” has been on the feature request list for a long time and is quite highly requested. Just need to find time to add it. 🙂

  • Carlos says:

Thanks for making riding more fun with scenic. Have driven many roads I would otherwise not have driven.

With scenic coming to android, is it possible to have it on my iPhone and android with one subscription?

    • Guido says:

Yes, but to be clear… Scenic Android won’t be released on October 1st. Only Scenic 4 for iOS.

      • Carlos says:

Thanks for clarifying that, would’ve anticipated being released on October 1st. Can you say something about a potential release date or is it too early for that?

  • Murray says:

I’d love to see the ability to share folders, and also create subfolders. Is there any chance of those being included in the new version?

    • Dae says:

I’d love to be able to share folders. When doing long multi day trips with multiple riders it’s frustrating having to do them one by one.

Subfolders would also be excellent as it would allow better organisation of my extensive library

  • Mark says:

I am a recent convert to Scenic. Since fitting a Chigee AIO-5 to my Tiger 1200, Scenic is the only navigation app that allows me to customise the road colours for better visibility, and also control the level of the volume in-app. It is quickly becoming my go-to nav app when on the bike.
The help from the forum is also excellent, so I am looking forward to seeing how version 4 will perform during my trip to Picos De Europa on 9th October.

  • Kristof says:

Scenic is a really great app for roadtrips. 1 tiny point. You can choose for the 3D option but actually, the card doesn’t display 3D like for example google Maps. Which makes curves easier to view and take.

  • dmo says:

It would be nice, if in the next version the possibility was implemented that you could connect several routes of a longer tour e.g. over several days to one.

    • Guido says:

It’s on the list, but won’t be in there from the start. But I have prepared the development to make adding this a lot easier.

  • Kai says:

Hello Guido, will kurviger.de still be supported?

    • Guido says:

Kurviger has made some changed. They removed the send to Scenic button, and they only offer standard curvy routing for competitor apps (unless you pay big bucks which I can not afford). So, Scenic 4 will have the standard curvy routing and the round trip. On the other side, the built in routing options are a lot more powerfull than what Scenic 3 had.

  • Tibor says:

Hi Guido, tell us: who is going to be the new map provider? There are not that many, so don’t make us guess….

  • Michiel says:

I love the app! Had been all over Europe with me and am curious to see the version 4! I also love the support and direct contact, awesome! Keep going Guido 🙂

  • MartinW says:

    👍🏻 🙏🏻

  • MarkN says:

    Guido,
As a long time Basecamp/Garmin user/guru, I have tried many programs and never found one that has the features and things I have come to expect when planning routes for myself and others. Due to changes with the new Zumo XT2 and the inevitable demise of Basecamp in the future, I decided to give Scenic a try after a club member was telling me about how he was able to navigate my Basercamp routes with Scenic. Since the new Tread App doesn’t even do a good job or transferring my routes from Basecamp I decided to give Scenic a try. This also coincided with the installation of a unit that runs CarPlay as an alternate to a GPS. So far Scenic has handled my routes from Basecamp and other programs almost perfectly and the ability to see the original route and make changes in the planner and app are great. The fact that I can actually plan routes with few problems on my iPad will eliminate the need to bring a computer on trips to use Basecamp. Planning route for the Zumo with the Tread App is a nightmare, scenic is a breeze. Based upon the upcoming V4 I looking forward to the updates as it seems you will close the gap with what Basecamp allows me to do and maybe I can drop it for good. I will be leaving for a multi-day trip on Oct 4, so it will be in time to try v4 out and see how it works and see the new features in action. Thanks for a great program!

  • Russ says:

Great work, Guido. Scenic keeps getting better and better. Looking forward to V4.

    Was passiert mit meinem Abo?
    Vielen Dank für Deine Rückmeldung,
    Viele Grüße Thomas

    • Guido says:

      Hi Thomas,

      Hi Thomas,

      *** English ***
Scenic 3 will stop working soon after October 1st.

Your subscription is for Scenic. Whether that’s for Scenic 3 or Scenic 4.

I hope the new map provider has a better record of keeping up with changes to speed limits. In my part of the world the speed details are so regularly incorrect that I just can’t trust what it says on the screen.

We really love the Scenic options and use it instead of our (old) Garmins.
Unfortunately there will not be an alternative for the iOS 15 iPhones which I think a lot of users use. We use our older iPhones only for the Scenicapp….
Not want to use my daily phone with camera in all weather conditions, bumpy roads (although have the demping Quadlock)
I am a former iPhone technician and won’t recommend anybody with any expensive phone (including camera) to use it on mountainbikes or motorcycles. Saw too many damaged ones due to heavy circumstances.

Really sad that these older phones won’t get to use Scenic app anymore. Understandable, but really a hugh disappointment.

  • Ralph says:

    Hi Guido
Will the configurability of map styles remain the same (or become even better 😉) in Scenic 4?
And will the new version keep the settings I have chosen in V3?
Looking forward to the new App. Keep up the good work!
    Best
    Ralph

    • Guido says:

Map customization will be added again laterr, after October 1st., and yes it will be better 🙂.
Most of your settings will stay, but some have changed. E.g. detour behaviour.

      • Ralph says:

Then I have to take screenshots of everything, because I like my map settings. Hopefully it won’t take too long until becoming available again in V4..

Hi there, I’ve just started enjoying this app. Love the curvy routes round NZ! I listen to the directions through my EarPods. Changed to your app as the last one I tried didn’t give me any notice before turns etc. hopefully the changes to your map provider still gives good directions with notice before actions?
