Using version 4
Quote from GB on 01.10.2024, 01:03Updated to v4 today, first impressions are it seems smoother, was in dark mode as I used it for the trip to work, haven’t tried light mode yet but will on the way home. First thing I noticed when switching from portrait mode to landscape mode you end up with two displays of your speed? One is fixed at the speed it was in portrait and the other is your current speed. On my bike I use landscape mode so that needs to be addressed pretty quickly. I know speed cameras are still to come but there is no visual over speed warning either, and it is switched on. But on the whole so far so good.
PS I really like the map for downloading offline.

Quote from Dae on 01.10.2024, 01:44I get a weird behaviour changing portrait to landscape too.
I’ve not used v4 to navigate yet as I have no way of mounting it on the bike, but even sat in the office I can see that it’s not right and would be annoying if it happened while riding (I’ve seen bumpy roads confuse the phone and make it rapidly change orientation, when I used to have it mounted)

Yes, there are two different motorways in this screenshot (M1 and M62) that are entirely indistinguishable from A roads.
For non-UK residents who may not understand, this is significant as the two road types have different rules and limitations on use. Our road signs are different - motorway signs are blue and A roads are green.
However, in the interest of fairness, Google also uses the same colours for the different road categories. They differentiate with the different coloured labels, which the new maps are missing.

You season may have ended, but that doesn't mean everybody's has. I ride all year round. There are also customers in Australia, for example, who are just about to start their "season", which will end in March.

Also visual speed warnings when over speeding, but can only see the bottom half, this used to happen on V 3 but did get sorted. It’s getting better all the time.

Quote from BigjayPE on 01.10.2024, 16:03Updated today and the first thing I noticed is the lack of back road names, compared to the previous version. Based on the FAQ supplied prior to the update, it was promised to have more detail. Sadly not yet unless I don't have a particular setting correct. My planned route was intact but not being able to see the names of the tracks makes on the ground navigation tricky, particularly where I plan to go this weekend.

Quote from Tangent on 01.10.2024, 16:50Following a route with some shaping point and deleting the last one while riding (it was sending me down side roads) it would show the next waypoint grayed out (I couldn’t delete it again from the map view), in the planner, the popup for steps didn’t list it but somehow it told me I had 2 hours to go for an 11km leg to my destination.
Not very specific but it was raining and I was prioritizing getting to my hotel.

Quote from BigjayPE on 01.10.2024, 16:59Now that you mention it, it shows over 12 hours for a 191km trip. Granted, a lot of the trip is on gravel but shouldn't be more than 3 hours. I think the release was rushed to provide continuation of the App but it may take a while before this version becomes properly usable. Not having the backroad names will be a deal breaker though. I use Scenic for my route planning and navigation and a few other Apps to ensure that the roads are actually navigable. Not having the names makes this very difficult to cross reference.

Quote from mattsz on 02.10.2024, 15:17Many of the rural area roads I ride have route numbers. For example, I can ride route 105 for miles; it remains route 105 even as the road names change from town to town. Few even know the road names; the route number is always used. Route numbers are the sensible choice, for planning and during navigation.
The old HERE maps showed route numbers, in large and easy-to-read format. The most recent HERE update (Scenic v3) still showed route numbers occasionally, but they became very tiny on the map and almost impossible to see, regardless of zoom level or custom font settings.
v4's OSM maps don't show the route numbers at all, at any zoom level, until I zoom out far enough that the road names become illegibly (for me) small text route names (for example, "ME 105"). This is definitely yet a further step backwards which I hope can be rectified in time?
Here's three examples of the above - same location and zoom levels (as close as I could get it). Note the route numbers 105 and 52. If I were trying to follow route 52, a road that had big white square route signs with black numbers on them, but no signs with street names on them, I know which display I would prefer:

OSM does indeed know the road number... how can it be shown on the Scenic map, as an easy-to-read number? Is it a user setting?
The OSM.org map doesn't show the numbers very effectively - I have to be zoomed out pretty far to see the numbers, and sometimes I have to scroll two or three full screens in any direction before I come across the road number. The numbers don't even show near the terminus of the route, which is where I would think it would be smart to show it.
OSM.org map - numbers shown, pretty easy to see, but not in convenient locations (example, "ME 173" circled in red by me):
Scenic v4 map of similar area - road numbers written as text, in roughly the same locations as the actual numbers above:
Note in this enlarged iphone screenshot image, the road number text is pretty easy to see and read, but "actual size" on my iphone, it's very tiny and very low contrast, difficult to see...

Are the names showing on openstreetmaps.org ? If so, the names are available and it's just a matter of styling (which I can do). If they are not known, then there's nothing I can do. In that case, you can improve the map yourself, or leaves comments for the OSM community: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/kartenprovider-scenic-4/#postid-9386
