Using version 4

Page 1 of 2Next

Updated to v4 today, first impressions are it seems smoother, was in dark mode as I used it for the trip to work, haven’t tried light mode yet but will on the way home. First thing I noticed when switching from portrait mode to landscape mode you end up with two displays of your speed? One is fixed at the speed it was in portrait and the other is your current speed. On my bike I use landscape mode so that needs to be addressed pretty quickly. I know speed cameras are still to come but there is no visual over speed warning either, and it is switched on. But on the whole so far so good.

PS I really like the map for downloading offline.

When I turn the phone horizontally I have this image. Only half of the screen is a map.

I get a weird behaviour changing portrait to landscape too.

I’ve not used v4 to navigate yet as I have no way of mounting it on the bike, but even sat in the office I can see that it’s not right and would be annoying if it happened while riding (I’ve seen bumpy roads confuse the phone and make it rapidly change orientation, when I used to have it mounted)

This is what I mean by two speeds.

unless it’s me the power planner doesn’t seem as easy to use as the previous version.

Another thing I’ve noticed is the motorways (UK) are the same colour as A roads.

I appreciate that the Here contract ended on the 1st and Guido had to put an app out for paying customers, but at the moment there are a few to many issues for me to use it so I will use OSMand for the time being. I think OSMand is the most powerful navigation app out there but its integration with WunderLINQ is not a patch on scenic and nor is its address search finder which is terrible. I will keep an eye out for any updates as I want to get back to using scenic as soon as I can.

Yes, there are two different motorways in this screenshot (M1 and M62) that are entirely indistinguishable from A roads.

For non-UK residents who may not understand, this is significant as the two road types have different rules and limitations on use. Our road signs are different - motorway signs are blue and A roads are green.

However, in the interest of fairness, Google also uses the same colours for the different road categories. They differentiate with the different coloured labels, which the new maps are missing.

That was what I liked about V3 you could have the motorways set as Blue.

Yeah - I customised mine to blue as we always ignore them.  I soon learned to not choose the same blue as the water areas, as that got confusing!

The maps seem to be Globus Openstreet map, however Openstreet map do show UK motorways in a different colour.

That's much better.

Issues on device rotation will be fixed in 4.01 (next week)

Map customizer is coming back

You probably already saw, but for others that come across this topic... here's more info on the feature that will be added back later, when, and why: https://scenic.app/scenic-4-faqs/

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

My iPhone hasn't updated although my iPad has....

But looking at V3.66 the Motorways are the same colour and I can't see a method to make them blue.

You could customise you maps in the menu to what colours you wanted.

Apple Carplay dont work anymore 😡 The icon is not appear it on my Africa Twin 1100. I use iPhone 15pro + ios18 Anyone else in that same trouble?

This has already been answered by Guido in the FAQ that he issued before v4 was released today.  It's also been asked, and answered,  already today.

Hallo Guido,

You season may have ended, but that doesn't mean everybody's has.  I ride all year round.  There are also customers in Australia, for example, who are just about to start their "season", which will end in March.

Sorry,

das tut mir leid für euch.

Used it again on the way home, it seems like there has been some updates already. Now have the speed limit back and the road name you are on which I like a lot. Also visual speed warnings when over speeding, but can only see the bottom half, this used to happen on V 3 but did get sorted. It’s getting better all the time.

Maybe because you downloaded the offline maps?

Yes that could be it.

Is there a recalculate button now or is it just automatic and it’s shows the original route?

More observations:

- logged out and on again

- created a simple route with just start and stop - working and visible in My Routes

- created and saved a more complex route with 10 stops and 10 vias - not visible in My Routes

Kann ich nicht bestätigen.

Diese Tour heute erstellt und gespeichert.

Die Saison ist für einige von uns noch lange nicht rum (falls überhaupt).

Updated today and the first thing I noticed is the lack of back road names, compared to the previous version. Based on the FAQ supplied prior to the update, it was promised to have more detail. Sadly not yet unless I don't have a particular setting correct. My planned route was intact but not being able to see the names of the tracks makes on the ground navigation tricky, particularly where I plan to go this weekend.

Following a route with some shaping point and deleting the last one while riding (it was sending me down side roads) it would show the next waypoint grayed out (I couldn’t delete it again from the map view), in the planner, the popup for steps didn’t list it but somehow it told me I had 2 hours to go for an 11km leg to my destination.

Not very specific but it was raining and I was prioritizing getting to my hotel.

Do Love the New UX and the map is much improved, at least for my neck of the woods.

Now that you mention it, it shows over 12 hours for a 191km trip. Granted, a lot of the trip is on gravel but shouldn't be more than 3 hours. I think the release was rushed to provide continuation of the App but it may take a while before this version becomes properly usable. Not having the backroad names will be a deal breaker though. I use Scenic for my route planning and navigation and a few other Apps to ensure that the roads are actually navigable. Not having the names makes this very difficult to cross reference.

I am having the same issues.  I just got a WunderlinQ and have been over the moon with the setup of that, plus Scenic.  With the new release it's not usable.  I had been using REVER prior to scenic, but I don't think it has WunderlinQ support.  Thanks for the tip on OSMand.  I will have to check it out.

Do you mean your WunderLINQ is not working with Scenic 4? It should. If it's not, then there's a bug.

Hallo Guido,

bei mir funktioniert die Straßensperre nicht mehr. Wenn ich ein Stück Straße sperren möchte, geht die App aus.

Seihe das als Info, falls das nicht aufgefallen ist.

Beste Grüße

Offline maps need to be installed for this to work.
In the next version I'll add a message for that.

Many of the rural area roads I ride have route numbers.  For example, I can ride route 105 for miles; it remains route 105 even as the road names change from town to town.  Few even know the road names; the route number is always used.  Route numbers are the sensible choice, for planning and during navigation.

The old HERE maps showed route numbers, in large and easy-to-read format.  The most recent HERE update (Scenic v3) still showed route numbers occasionally, but they became very tiny on the map and almost impossible to see, regardless of zoom level or custom font settings.

v4's OSM maps don't show the route numbers at all, at any zoom level, until I zoom out far enough that the road names become illegibly (for me) small text route names (for example, "ME 105"). This is definitely yet a further step backwards which I hope can be rectified in time?

Here's three examples of the above - same location and zoom levels (as close as I could get it). Note the route numbers 105 and 52.  If I were trying to follow route 52, a road that had big white square route signs with black numbers on them, but no signs with street names on them, I know which display I would prefer:

Scenic 3.1:

Scenic 3.5:

Scenic 4.0:

If OSM knows the road number, it can be shown. Does OSM know? You can check at openstreetmaps.org

In the UK with a random road I checked there’s the road number on OSM, but not shown in Scenic.

In my scenario, OSM shows the road and track names but Scenic 4 does not.

OSM does indeed know the road number... how can it be shown on the Scenic map, as an easy-to-read number?  Is it a user setting?

The OSM.org map doesn't show the numbers very effectively - I have to be zoomed out pretty far to see the numbers, and sometimes I have to scroll two or three full screens in any direction before I come across the road number.  The numbers don't even show near the terminus of the route, which is where I would think it would be smart to show it.

OSM.org map - numbers shown, pretty easy to see, but not in convenient locations (example, "ME 173" circled in red by me):

Scenic v4 map of similar area - road numbers written as text, in roughly the same locations as the actual numbers above:

Note in this enlarged iphone screenshot image, the road number text is pretty easy to see and read, but "actual size" on my iphone, it's very tiny and very low contrast, difficult to see...

I also checked. At some zoom levels the road number shows. But... at a certain zoom level the road name starts showing and "fighting" for place. At the moment road name has higher priority so it wins. I'll see if I can change that.

Hey @guidomm, any feedback on the missing gravel road and track names?  All those roads and tracks had names visible. I was hoping to share the GPX file with you but can't upload it here. Not sure if it's a setting or an issue?

Are the names showing on openstreetmaps.org ? If so, the names are available and it's just a matter of styling (which I can do). If they are not known, then there's nothing I can do. In that case, you can improve the map yourself, or leaves comments for the OSM community: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/kartenprovider-scenic-4/#postid-9386

Yes they are. How can I send you the GPX file so that you can see the area I am talking about?

You can share the link to the route: select route from list, use 'three dots' button top right. You can post it here or if you prefer to keep it private, send me an email through the email button at the bottom of help page.

Ok. I’ve added it to the list and will investigate. Will take a bit because there are higher prios at the moment. Will report back here.
