Supporting Scenic’s Transition to OpenStreetMap (OSM)

As a long-time user of the Scenic app, and after reading about Guido’s nightmare with HERE maps, I fully support its transition to OpenStreetMap (OSM) for mapping.

However, as OSM is community-driven, its accuracy and currency depend on contributions from users like us. After Scenic’s switch to OSM, I noticed several inaccuracies in my hometown, including outdated business names, missing buildings, and incomplete road information like speed limits.

To address this, I’ve registered as an OSM contributor and started making updates in my region. So far, I’ve:

•Renamed and updated numerous businesses to reflect current information.

•Added missing businesses, buildings and structures.

•Updated speed limits for roads where they were missing.

Contributing to OSM is surprisingly straightforward, and it’s rewarding to know that my edits directly improve Scenic’s mapping and navigation experience for myself and others.

That said, my observations about the inaccuracies in my hometown lead me to believe that, while I’d feel fairly comfortable relying on OSM data for navigation, I’d likely double-check information about accommodations, restaurants, businesses, etc., using a commercial mapping product like Apple Maps or Google Maps while route planning.

If you’ve noticed inaccuracies in your area, I encourage you to join the OSM community. Your local knowledge can make a big difference! Together, we can ensure that Scenic’s maps remain accurate and up to date for all users.

If anyone has questions about getting started with OSM editing, feel free to ask—I’d be happy to share what I’ve learned.

Thank you Paul. I really appreciate this. For what it’s worth, here is a help article for others to get started with this. It’s pretty basic so indeed if there are any questions, perhaps this forum topic is a good place to post those questions.

Reporting map errors

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

I did register as well 🙂

However, my/our changes has to be approved by a "local" appointed operator, right?

If yes, there is a delay / uncertanty there, I guess. But still waaay better than Here maps, where noting at all happened.

Hi Johan

I don’t know if different areas have different requirements for approvals.  I know that where I am located, I can make changes and upload therm immediately to OSM.  My edits are typically visible in OSM within minutes.  They then show up in Scenic and other apps that use OSM, such as Organic Maps as an example, whenever those apps fetch the latest data from OSM, typically every 1-2 months as noted at the end of link from Guido’s post above.

The reason I wanted to make my post was primarily to make everyone aware that, as a non-commercial product, there can be a lot of inaccuracies especially in relation to businesses, hotels, restaurants, etc.  Given my experience with looking around my own hometown in OSM and finding a LOT of outdated information, I would be hesitant to rely on OSM, in this regard, for areas I know nothing about.  For example, I found restaurants and motels showing in Scenic (on OSM) that have been closed for over 5 years.

Thanks! I did not register any changes to the map, I just registered as a user and went through the totorial. I read about the supervisor and thought, fine, that should stop those making nonsense for some reason or other. And maybe, or obviously, there is an alternative for direct implementation. That´s fine, I guess 🙂

Your tip about inaccuracy in relation to busnisses etc is most welcome! Not nice going to a hotel, not there, although personally I mostly use Booking.com and Google maps for this type of search.

Hallo zusammen,

Hi,

For what it is worth: I made a map correction on OSM in Belgium (reviewed by some local approvers), and after 6 weeks that update was available in Scenic.

Ronny
