Scenic auto-routing not playing the game?

On a bike ride on the weekend we stopped  for lunch in this small town (or village). When it was time to leave, I told Scenic to take me home. It's a fairly straightforward route.

We came into town from the north and left to the south. The route wanted to head back the way we came in. But a kilometre or so out of town it recalculated. All good, or so I thought.

Anyway, it was saying that the next turn was at a roundabout 22 km ahead. Er, no, I thought. I'm turning left in about 10 km.

I got to that intersection, turned left and kept going. Scenic wanted to either turn around or when I approached an intersection to turn right down that one.

It did this all the way home. Basically it was trying to get me onto the main highway, but I was riding home on the back roads.
Even when I was in my town and heading towards my house it wanted me to turn back or to turn right to head to the highway. It wasn't until I was on my street that it finally worked out where to go, and I was 800m from home at this point.

Attached is a screen shot of actual route that I rode and highlighted is where it wanted me to go.

As you can see the red line is hand (or rather, finger) drawn and highlighted in yellow and was the route that Scenic wanted to use. The light green line is the actual route that I rode.

Now, I've gone through Scenic's settings to see what needs to be changed. But I'm at a loss as I'm not sure if I've set them right.

What I need to know is how to get Scenic to recalculate the route so it quickly works out that this is where I want to go based on my current location on the ride.

Normally it does it, especially for routes that involve freeways and making detours. But in the case of these back roads it's not really playing the game.

Thanks.

Did your route have any via points or stops?

If the answer is YES:
If so, is it possible it was trying to guide you back to the first missed via point? More info on that here: https://scenic.app/help/detour-behaviour-scenic/

If the answer is NO (no via points or stops):
If it didn't have any via points or stops, then I can partially explain it. I assume your routing mode was "standard" and avoid highways disabled (i.e. highways allowed). In that case, when you deviate from the highway and instead take some (slower) back roads, Scenic will, at first, try to turn you around to get back on the highway, because, even with the extra time required to turn you around, you'd still be home sooner/faster.
What I can NOT explain, is why it kept doing that until you were almost home. If you keep ignoring instructions to return to the highway, at some point it would become faster to just continue on the backroads in stead of turning you around to get back on the highway.

All I did was to tap on the "Search" button, select Home (my home address), then tap on go.

As for your explanation, it's worked as you describe in the past. But on this ride, it was just plain 'ornery and kept insisting that I go via the M1 Princes Freeway from Moe to Traralgon (as shown on the map).

Anyway, thanks for looking at this.

Hi Guido.

Yesterday we went for another ride. The ride to the place called Tooradin (near the mighty and famous Phillip Island where MotoGP and World Supers are held) for a meet-up with a vintage Japanese motorbike club.

Going there we took the direct route. I included one stop in a town called Leongatha to pick up someone, then continued on the planned route. However, I must've missed the stop as it kept telling me to turn around after we left Leongatha.

It wasn't until we were about 2km from Tooradin that it corrected itself and navigated me to our destination.

On the way home, instead of using a planned route I simply tapped on the "home" button, it created the route and off we went.

All was well until we passed the turn-off to head towards home. And for the next 80 km it kept on telling me to turn around, or turn left, or turn right down whatever roads to get me back to the planned route. It wasn't recalculating.

It wasn't until we got to a town, about 40km from home did it recalculate properly and started navigating correctly.

Have a look at the attached screen shots that I took of scenic when viewing the tracked ride and the planned route (Scenic for iPad on the M2 Pro Mac Mini).

The first image is the planned route from home to Tooradin

The second route is our trip home, not following the planned route. As you can see, with motorbike riding, Point A to Point B is NOT in a straight line.

The planned route to home that Scenic generated and which I didn't follow, expecting it to recalcuate.

And below are the settings. What should I be changing?

Thanks

Martin

Regarding the way from home…. Did you place a via or a stop in Leongatha? I assume a via otherwise it would have not automatically skipped it. And I also assume that you have auto-skip via points turned on? More info here: https://scenic.app/help/detour-behaviour-scenic/

Regarding the way to home. I’d expect this is normal, assuming your routing settings are set to fast… it wants you to get home the fastest way. Up to a certain point it will be faster (you’ll get home sooner) to turn you around and get you back to the highway in stead of continuing on smaller roads.

Hi Guido. Yes, there was a "Stop" in Leongatha but I didn't actually stop at that point. It was elsewhere in town.

Yes, auto-skip is turned on and set to "after 2 recalculations".

Anything else that I can look at?

Thanks
