Latest update gravel roads
Quote from Baseman55 on 12.10.2024, 21:22In the latest update, scenic doesn’t know the difference between gravel roads and tarmac where in the last version it did. Does the latest base map provider know about which roads are gravel and which are tarmac? This is a deal breaker for me since I only use the round trip functionality with my road bike.

Quote from kelled2 on 13.10.2024, 07:40As soon as you click on Curvy you lose the ability to check the avoid dirt roads box. I drove 5 miles on a gravel road in my 911 yesterday. I WAS NOT HAPPY!!!!!!

Quote from Guido on 13.10.2024, 08:19I'm sorry, but since Kurviger released their own iOS app, they removed the 'send to Scenic' button from their site, and changed their pricing model for the non-standard curvy options to such a high level that we can not afford it anymore. This includes “extra curvy” and “fast curvy”, but also the advanced avoidance like avoid unpaved.
I understand why Kurviger did this, so no hard feelings towards Kurviger, but it's just not possible for Scenic to pay the new prices.
On the flip side, the new map provider has some advanced routing modes of its own as can been seen in johansw’s screenshot above.

Quote from kelled2 on 13.10.2024, 08:39This basically makes the app unusable for me. I bought this app and have been very happy with it and have recommended it to a lot of people. It no longer works for me with these limitations. I don’t want to be on gravel roads with my car or street bike. I do want to be on gravel with my dual sport. Unless this app can be brought back to it’s previous level of usability I would like my money back.

Quote from kelled2 on 13.10.2024, 11:53I’m sorry as well. I would cancel my subscription but I bought the app. I predict you will be losing subscribers since the app no longer has the functionality that made it useful.

Quote from greg2112 on 18.10.2024, 09:45As I ride paved roads only, and plan day trips and multi-day trips, the ability to plan the routes ahead of time and KNOWING that a road is NOT GRAVEL is critically important. Any map platform should have the intel to know the type of road. If this is not coming to Scenic in the new platform, I will be forced to find another app. I've suggested this to so many people, including those on various large FB groups and forums. Please find a way to get this to work again.

Quote from greg2112 on 18.10.2024, 11:38Excellent news, Guido. When you say "next version", do you mean the next maintenance release, (4.03) or the next major version release further down the road?
Thank you!

I just updated to 4.03... known unpaved roads (and there's a lot of unpaved roads near me that are shown as paved) appear to (still) be alternating pink-and-white colored. New (I think) to the update for me is, now there are hiking trails appearing in purple...

Quote from Guido on 20.10.2024, 18:22If they are not showing as purple (or purple alternating with another color), then there is probably an error in the map data. In other words, OSM doesn't know these roads are unpaved. Unfortunately I can't handle reporting all these map errors, but you can report them yourself if you want. Here's more info: https://scenic.app/help/reporting-map-errors/
The roads should have a "surface" tag with one of the below values:
[surface=unpaved],
[surface=compacted],
[surface=fine_gravel],
[surface=gravel],
[surface=shells],
[surface=rock],
[surface=pebblestone],
[surface=ground],
[surface=dirt],
[surface=earth],
[surface=grass],
[surface=mud],
[surface=sand],
[surface=woodchips],
[surface=snow],
[surface=ice],
[surface=salt]

Quote from mattsz on 21.10.2024, 04:02Ok, so I did some searching around my local area on the map... hiking trails are showing in the same purple as dirt roads, but with a lighter dashed line of some color within them. There are other small roads indicated by white with a light pink dashed line within... what are these, private roads? Some I know are paved, some not.
Is there a "legend" somewhere that describes what all the colors and symbols mean?
I looked and eventually found some unpaved roads showing as plain purple, but they're very hard to distinguish from the foot paths. Hopefully this will eventually be addressable by a map color and road size customizer, like v3 had.
There are a lot of unpaved roads in my area that OSM doesn't appear to know about... if I assume the same everywhere else, then we all have another problem...

Quote from johansw on 21.10.2024, 05:05I found this legend, amomg several more (https://alternativaslibres.org/en/legend.php) on Wikipedria for OSM maps. I guess it will be hard to customize all these..

Quote from mattsz on 21.10.2024, 05:26Thanks johansw... I note that the legend image you posted is different from the one at your link... and neither one matches what we see on the Scenic maps. Neither matches the OSM website maps, either...

Quote from johansw on 21.10.2024, 05:42You are right! As I stated, there are so many different legends for OSM maps. It is hard to find "ours". This was only a sort of demonstration of what problems we might face. But as Guido has stated, he will make editing roads and landscape colors possible - I guess this comes a bit later as beeing able to navigate safely comes first. So I am patiently waiting to have it ready before the 2025 season starts for me, around April.. 🙂

So, the avoid unpaved route will not come back for curvy for sure ? That really is an issue. Today I had several times to turn around because of that....
