Handlebar Controller
Quote from Stefan on 23.12.2023, 13:46Hello Guido and all others,
I´m new to this forum but not new to Scenic. Ever since I made first contact with this app I´m impressed with the visuals. But I´m rocking back and forth between my old style Garmin device and my iPhone as a navigational solution. And here´s why, I can´t change anything when driving since my gloves, at least the thicker ones, do not work with capacitive touch screens.
I remember to have seen some handlebar controllers being promoted/ announced. However, I can´t find them again. But I recall that the design was a bit to straight for my liking. That´s why I have used the pre-Xmas time to do my own.
Don´t know whether this is the right spot to post them. But here you go. This is my proposal/ "design request" for handlebar controllers.
Merry Xmas to all,
Stefan

This looks very nice. I’ll pass this on to Bart (the creator of the Motive Monkey), if he didn’t already see it.
The Motive Monkey is the controller we communicated about in the past. It’s not for sale yet though. Here’s the website: https://inventionsforrider.wixsite.com/motive-monkey and here is a video of how it works: https://youtu.be/W3smaavanQQ?si=y1G74NLLKJx6RHJ2
For what it’s worth… Bart tried a few designs so far. All have their advantages and disadvantages. Me personally (he sent me a few models to try/test) prefer the “joystick” version and the version where the buttons are placed in a “plus” shape. This makes the remote a bit bigger, but more intuitive to use.

Of course I really enjoy using Scenic with a Carplay display (Carpuride) for navigation on my KTM-SDGT. Now I have a question about a handlebar controller that I saw on Facebook. It's called "Remotek". It's very small, doesn't need a power connection (because it has a battery) and seems sturdy. Do you know this remote control? Will it also work on Scenic and Carplay/Carpuride?

I'm not sure this will work. I took a look at the manual, and perhaps the GoPro profile might work, but it mentions that needs to GoPro app. Perhaps you can ask the creators of that remote. Here are the key-presses that Scenic listens to: https://scenic.app/help/handlebar-controllers/?seq_no=2

Quote from Drive4fun on 10.07.2024, 15:43Thank you very much Guido for your quick reply. Okay, then I'll ask Remotek whether a working connection between Scenic/Carplay and the Remotek is possible, ... or can be made possible.
Greetings, Peter

Therefore, I was very much interested in using the handlebar controller. The MotiveMonkey is finally in the market? Are there (good and not-too-expensive) alternatives? Thanks!

Quote from Guido on 21.08.2024, 16:13First batch of Motive Monkey is in production now. Keep an eye on our social channels and/or subscribe to our newsletter to get the latest news. (buttons below in footer). Motive Monkey is created by one of our Scenic users.
Another option is BarButtons. I don't know any other alternatives. Here's more info if not already seen: https://scenic.app/help/handlebar-controllers

Quote from Guido on 03.09.2024, 14:05I recently had a quesion about the ARN buttons through email. Perhaps that question came from you Thomas?
Here's my answer:I think it will work with Scenic, but I can't be 100% sure without trying it. The manual on the Arm website is not conclusive about which keyboard keys are used with this control.Scenic can only support remote controls that act as a bluetooth keyboard and use certain "keyboard keys": https://scenic.app/help/handlebar-controllers/If anyone in our community has tried the ARN with Scenic, would you mind reporting back here if it worked or not?

yes, that was me - I was hoping anyone else here tried them with e.g. OSMand and has experience when using Scenic or cand try them. Meanwhly I wrote a mail to ARN to see if I can get more information of the function and if the response is that it works as a Keyboard, I might try them and let you know.

bzw, I got feedback that the ARN won‘t work with iPhones…..for whatever reason, because a BT keyboard is not limited to Android.
I will have a look at the Motive Monkey

Quote from Middelfrangge on 13.02.2025, 06:14Hi,
I do have now MotiveMonkey buttons but found some used Barbuttons as well which are more usefull when using Carplay. What I am missing is a description what I can do with the buttons. There is a setting pissible but to me not clear which function is controlled with Scenic.
I do have 8 Buttons when using Barbuttons but only 4 different Settings are available - for which of the 8 Buttons is the setting and what is the function bihind when selecting „jump forward/vorwärts springen“ for example.
It also seems that carplay funtions are fixex and cannot be changed to a different button. With MM, I only have panning of the map, with barbuttons I have zoom in/out and pann8ng as well as return to current position. Thats pretty cool, specially because when getting to another app on carplay, Scenic returns back on my phine with full functionality…..the only issue is the controller settings that are not clear for the barbuttons.
Regards
Thomas
P.S.: if someone needs MM Buttons, I will sell mine which are absolutely new but not usefullto me with my carplay setting.

Quote from Guido on 13.02.2025, 06:19Hi Thomas,
In v4.12 I added the zooming and panning in CarPlay for MM back. I’ve also updated the description here: https://scenic.app/help/handlebar-controllers/?seq_no=2
For BarButtons, check the manual/ key mapping of your BarButtons. This should tell you what hardware button represents keyboard button arrow up/down/left/right/enter/esc/+/-. And then you know the functionality.
Cheers,
Guido

Quote from Middelfrangge on 13.02.2025, 08:34Hi Guido,
thanks, I did not recognize that MM are working with both zooming and panning, however zooming is not possible pan and zoom at a certain position. Whenever I get out of panning, it returns to my current position before I can zoom. With barbuttons I have zooming and panning at the same time because of the number of wpavailable buttons.
Anyway, thats up to everyones user profile.
I saw your settings, for controllers but it does not finally answer my question or I do not understand how. I have 8 buttons but which button out of those is meant when the setup allows a setting for a left long press? I have 4 buttons left and another 4 buttons similar to the MM with a left buttom. Furthermore the barbuttons do not provide an escape function acc. to the app and even the zoom with + is done with a „strg =„ acc to the barbuttons app.
Sorry, to me still not completely clear. I am searching as well for panning of the map which works with carplay but not when using the phone. Is there an option for that available?
Regards
Thomas

I would also like to raise again one question. We were discussing in the past regarding the introduction of map panning with an external controller (barbuttons in this case), but directly on the phone display, without carplay. Any plans so far to implement this in version 4? Zoom in and out works so far and on top of this, the panning itself would be a great help...
thanks and regards
Volker
