And yes, take those pain meds. When I had major surgery (twice) they had one of those automatic morphine machines that injected the happy juice on demand. At first I was hesitant to take it, but the doctor scolded me and said that getting on top of the pain is half the battle. So, I aquiesced and floated off into happy land.
And when off the morphine, every ten minutes the nurses would ask how I was doing and my pain levels. I'd always say 11 (out of 10 - a Spinal Tap joke). But I gave them a realistic number and took the meds as appropriate.
Good luck with the recovery.
