Emotions and facts
Quote from Binwaa on 13.03.2025, 22:03I have ridden 7.500 km between 9/2 and 10/3/25 in North, North East and central Thailand. I used scenic 4.11 up to 4.15. All my routes were planned at least the day before. All my routes have been tracked and saved.
Now first get rid of my emotions :Scenic became a catastrophe, unusable, making me stressed all the time. I missed many planned locations, which I did not visit due to Scenic. So sad.
And now the facts :
As I planned everything with waypoints (via and stops), I presume that I will pass or stop there. But while riding, Scenic is losing waypoints all the time. So you have to monitor this continuously or you will get somewhere else, up to a straight high way to the endpoint. The only way around was to stop the route, save the ride, start the route again, delete all the waypoint including the start point up to my actual location and start again. The result is that I have many ride files per day, every time I restarted.
Scenic is asking regularly if I want to skip or don’t skip a waypoint. The default is ‘skip’ which really should be ‘don’t skip’. You get a limited amount of time to hit the ‘don’t skip’ button, otherwise you lose the point. But when you succeeded to hit the ‘don’t skip’ button in time, Navigation stops definitively and the lady refuses to say anything anymore. Can be solved be restarting the route navigation again and delete all the waypoints you passed already.
You can imagine the number of times, I was busy with Scenic on my phone along the road. As IT-expert, I managed to get it done, but most users will abandon Scenic working like this.
There are some other annoying issues :
- I heard ‘too fast’ while riding more than 1000 times, just because Scenic thinks it is a max 30 while it is max 50. You can only solve this by stopping the navigation, change the settings to ‘shut up’ about speed, restart the route and delete all the waypoints points you passed already.
- ‘over 92 km, turn left’ : this was a long road in the mountains, with no side roads. I heard this message many, many times. During the 1:30 ride to that point, I was thinking about to turn to the right 🙁
- The next one can only be mentioned in Dutch : ‘recht door rijden om op te blijven’. Translated it means : ‘ride straight on to keep awake’. It really should have been ‘recht door rijden om op 3021 te blijven’, which is number of the road. But probably the road number is not available.- estimation of arrival time has an error of 40% at least. I start at 8:00 and scenic mentions 20:30. In reality it is 16:30 or sometimes even less. But that’s also influenced by the waypoints you are losing all the time .
- as estimation of arrival is mostly incorrect, I want to see the remaining kilometers instead. But it is written so small, that you need to stop to read it.
- the whole mechanism of saving routes is not according to Apple standards. The mechanism of saving and replacing should be automatic. Look at apps from Apple like ‘Pages’ and ‘Numbers’, there is no save or replace implemented. This should be redesigned.
- the system with layers is not updating when you empty the folder. Routes an roads still being displayed. You need to quit Scenic to get the screen refreshed.
I still had some more issues, but I did not write them down, as you can imagine, I preferred to give priority to enjoy the beautiful ride through Thailand. I count on you Guido to solve those major and some minor issues as this could be the end of Scenic, not necessarily for me but at least for many none IT users.

Quote from Guido on 14.03.2025, 06:27Hi Benoit,
while riding, Scenic is losing waypoints all the time
That is “as designed” when you turn on the auto-skip waypoint option. You can change the number of recalculations before a via point is skipped, or turn it off altogether. Settings > Nav & Tracking > Detour Behaviour.
You get a limited amount of time to hit the ‘don’t skip’ button
You can increase this time. Settings > Nav & Tracking > Menu auto close time.
The idea is to decrease the number of button taps. Scenic assumes you want to skip the via point more often than not skip it. After Al, these were the settings you chose. That’s why it defaults (when the timer ends) to skip the via point.
when you succeeded to hit the ‘don’t skip’ button in time, Navigation stops definitively and the lady refuses to say anything anymore
That sounds like a bug. I’ll have a look.
I heard ‘too fast’ while riding more than 1000 times, just because Scenic thinks it is a max 30 while it is max 50.
I can decrease the frequency (it’s now every 30 seconds if I remember correctly). But the real solution is of course to correct the speed limit: https://scenic.app/help/reporting-map-errors/
You can only solve this by stopping the navigation, change the settings to ‘shut up’ about speed, restart the route and delete all the waypoints points you passed already.
- I’m planning to make more settings available from the navigation menu. Will take a while though.
- There is a faster way to restart a route in the middle: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/begin-at-a-certain-waypoint-stop/#postid-11477
over 92 km, turn left’ : this was a long road in the mountains, with no side roads. I heard this message many, many times
That’s strange. It should only say that max 4 times. Perhaps the route was recalculated a few times due to inaccuracies in GPS position in the mountains? Did you hear the route recalculation sound too? And were the mentioned distances rounded to 80km / 70 km etc?
recht door rijden om op te blijven
I’m Dutch too so I understand. That is either a mistake in the map data or the routing engine. I’m curious if it would mention the route name or road number when English is selected as language. Did you notice this one time, or was this structurally?
estimation of arrival time
Known problem. I’m working with the map provider on a solution.
the whole mechanism of saving routes
Sorry. Don’t agree with that one.
layers is not updating when you empty the folder
Yes. Known bug. It’s on the list to fix. Meanwhile you don’t have to restart. Just open the layers panel again, and tap the “refresh/reload” button top left.

Quote from Guido on 14.03.2025, 09:18I don't know how that is possible. If you turned off Scenic in CarPlay then it can't show up on CarPlay. This is out of my control and is arranged by iOS and CarPlay. Please note that these settings to disable an app on CarPlay, is per CarPlay system. If you disable Scenic for one CarPlay system, it will still show on another CarPlay system.

Quote from Guido on 14.03.2025, 09:56That is very strange. When Scenic appears on CarPlay, even though it's been disabled, this is unexpected (and untested) behaviour, which can cause unexpected things with your ride recording.
I just tried it here and I can not reproduce this.
Perhaps your CarPlay system is remembering some earlier setting? Can you switch to another navigation app (Maps, Google Maps, Waze) and make sure that app icon is in the CarPlay toolbar when you disconnect from CarPlay. Then try to reconnect and see if Scenic appears again.
And you are sure that the Scenic icon is not on your CarPlay screen?

Quote from Guido on 14.03.2025, 10:06@binwaa, regarding the navigation stopping when you tapped the "don't skip" button.... was it only the voice instructions that stopped, or also no more instructions on screen? Was the route itself still on the map?

probably more than 4 times as I needed to restart regularly, and also on the way back as this village has only one road to access it.
But anyway, 90 km on forehand to tell me to turn left, is really too early. No message about turning left or right should be done within 5km, or even better 2km. Don’t forget, I also need to ride and take care about traffic, security and enjoying the ride 😉

this was structural. I was singing a song to the lady ‘sweetheart, I woke up already…’ every time.

Normally, without recalculations and restarts, Scenic can give max 5 warnings for a turn. 1 warning immediately after you turn onto the highway or long road. Then it can say something like “in x distance turn right”. This is handy because when this distance is long you know you can relax a little bit and pay less attention to the screen, more to the road. And then there can be 4 more, but you can disable those in Settings > Sound & Voice Instructions > Voice instruction frequency.
