Current map database and paved road info

I seem to remember mention that Scenic will switch to another map database. When this happens is there any chance the new database will have more accurate info on paves/unpaved roads. While I do select "avoid" unpaved, Scenic often directs me down a road that after a few miles goes to gravel. Sometimes it becomes paved again after a quarter mile, sometimes it's gravel for miles and miles -- I can never tell.

I'm not sure yet... have not gotten into that level of detail with the new map provider.

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Hi Guido,

Being a software engineer myself, I can imagine the pressure to bring a new platform to the level of features that the old version was at after years of development…

Just wanted to comment on this issue. Just rode yesterday and I got snagged on a road which had miles of gravel section ( BTW, that section never been paved before) and had to turned around and this situation made me to greatly miss the old Scenic version. BTW This was the exact feature of the old version that made me choose Scenic in the first place.

This issue is with the map database not being accurate and it makes the algorithm to produce an wanted route.

Hope you consider is issue as a major satisfaction item,

Thanks,

Tony.

Hi Tony. I do consider this a major feature for Scenic.
At the moment, you can not make offline stretches visible on the map, but this will come back with the map-style customizer.

I you selected "avoid unpaved" in the routing modes panel, and it still guided you over an unpaved road, then this is very likely a map data issue. Here more info on how to report these issues:

https://scenic.app/help/reporting-map-errors/

With this provider (OSM based), these issues actually get picked up.

Guido,

I think there is a "bug".   I found a section of road I think is known to be unpaved by OSM.   Scenic seems to route around that correctly if you use "Car" mode.   However, it does not in "Motorcycle" mode.

The error seems to be in the routing, not the base map data.   Not sure if the routing is in Scenic or OSM coding.

I saved a public route "Dirt Test NC" using my "Bob3" Scenic name.  This is along NC 197 between Barnardsville NC and Murchison NC.   The fastest way and usual way is Route 197, but that has a gravel section that has never been paved.  The paved alternative route  is much longer.

Other observations:

1) Is there a way to show unpaved roads in Scenic 4.

I can see them on OSM...but only in select map styles.   The default version on their website shows the road, but does not differentiate unpaved sections.

Something like the dark brown from V3 would be terrific.

2) I'm still looking around on OSM at known unpaved sections.   In Western NC, it seems to know the main ones.   But still, some are missing.  Not sure there is a really a good "global" database available.  Until that happens, no program will be able to automatically avoid unpaved segments.

The best technique I've found is to use Google Street View to check when building routes.   If the desired road isn't covered yet, you can check all the intersections with roads that are.   Sometimes you can tell with satellite imagery.   Sometimes the State DOT websites show paved vs. unpaved.   It's an imperfect solution, but the best available until there are better "global" digital maps available.

Generally speaking, Google has very few unpaved roads covered with Street View.  If you go look at places where street view ends, that's usually where an unpaved section begins.   So I start with using roads that have street view along the whole section, and then verify several stretches along questionable roads.   If I really need a section without street view coverage, then I research using the techniques previously mentioned.

This works pretty well in the USA, maybe not so well elsewhere.   On a recent trip to Colombia in the "coffee country" region, I found many unpaved roads included on street view.  But since we were on smaller lighter adventure style bikes, it didn't matter as much.   That said...if I had taken the time to look at all the street view pics, I might have rerouted on less challenging roads and missed some awesome views.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for letting me know. I'll take a look at the route your created to see if there's something wrong in the routing.

Making unpaved roads visible will be possible once I bring back the map customizer: https://scenic.app/scenic-4-faqs/

Satelite maps are also coming back.

Best regards,
Guido

Not happy with the new map settings. Is there a way to go back to the previous version until you all figure out how to make the new one work as it should?  I love this app but I’m not going to use it if it sends me down a gravel road when I don’t want to be on gravel.   There are times I would prefer to be on nothing but gravel but not on my street bike or Porsche.

Sorry for your bad experience. We were forced to migrate to a new map provider in a very short time or stop Scenic altogether. All functions will return. CarPlay by the end of October / beginning November. Here you can find more information if you want: https://scenic.app/scenic-4-faqs/
