I'm wondering how widespread the voice guidance bugs are amongst the userbase? Personally I'm a long time user of the app and love it but ever since the new updated user interface the voice guidance seems spotty at best for me.

Currently am I running 2.2.6 (iOS 13.3.1, iPhone XS, premium forever) and the SOP for me using the app is generating random round trips and following those. The app though tends to just give the first voice cue and then gives up on voice all together.

Another annoyance linked to this is that you can't forcefully close the app and restart he trip to try and get the voice to work (because resuming trips doesn't work for the generated round trips). There are plenty of other apps running at the same time, most notably Spotify for music and often Waze for additional info/logging.

Good idea doing a poll. Whatever the outcome I will have another look at this. It should just work, always! Apologies for the inconvenience!

Just to double check. Did you experience this issue with version 2.2.6 still? I did a bug fix for voice in that update. See here: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/bug-music-in-the-background-low-volume.

Yes, I should probably have mentioned that. I did a tour yesterday with 2.2.6 and still experienced the issue. Seeing the changelog had my hopes up before the trip but sadly no improvements on my end.

ich have the same issue too.

I updated to 2.26, have an iPhone 11 pro with the software 13.4. I reinstalled scenic several times, but still the voice guidance stops after three or four advises. Only the re-routing sound appears. No speed-warning, no turn advises.

I just wrote xou a mail about this behaviour.

The 'music-in-background-low-volume' issue is solved wir 2.26. I wanted to sell my Zumo 595 because I really like scenic, but I do need the guiding advises.

Thanks Thomas. I'm aware of the problem and that 2.2.6 does not resolve it. Working on a fix as we speak. If you'd like to be a beta tester for this function please send me another email. Btw... installing and reinstalling the app won't help with this problem. It's a bug in the code unfortunately. It really needs an update for it to be fixed.

Hi, Guido.  Not sure if you are getting my feedback through the TestFlight app.  Version 2.2.7b2 has not corrected any of the audio issues for me.  Volume still drops and does not come back, or sometimes the music will stop entirely.  The only time the volume comes back up is if (1) my phone rings for a moment or (2) a recalculation cycle starts --- and even then, not always.

I did not see it but have received similar feedback. Working on it as we speak. Did you get the email to all beta testers? In there I ask for feedback to be emailed to me? Might have ended up in spam folder. Sender is ‘Scenic Beta’ (scenic@scenicappnewsletter.space)

I am also experiencing this issue. It always works to begin with, but after a few minutes the voice just stops, both giving directions and speed warnings.

The workaround is to kill the app and when it restarts, resume, but that’s a pain when riding.

I was wondering whether it’s because I was using an enhanced voice from iOS (kate).  Will try the default (martha) on my next ride. Will also disable the speed warnings in case that is interfering.

I am new to the app and really like it. So hoping to get a resolution to the voice issue.

Hi Everyone,

just wanted to give you a quick update. So, there is currently a bug in the app that could cause voice instructions to stop playing after a while. This issue has top priority and I’m working with the Beta Testers to get this fixed as soon as possible. We are close to a fix and I’m hoping to release an update by next weekend. It’s all a bit slower currently because ‘going out for a test ride’ is not as easy these days, so bug fix cycles are longer.

Preliminarily looks like 2.2.7 fixed the audio bug.

  1.  Noticed that within 24 hours of your release of 2.2.7 the APP store did not show the need to download as an update.  Your notes pointed me to it.  Likely fixed and updating by now.
  2. Tested this morning.  Well done.
    1. First a programmed route which I followed--audio directions stayed on all the way.
    2. Next, deviated from planned route.  Have auto recalculate set, not back to starting point.  It recalced and audio directions followed and provided through end of multiple re-routes.
    3. Finally, ran route with music on (Pandora) and changing directions while traveling.  Music diminished in volume, Scenic directions were given, and music returned to prior volume. All audio worked all the way through the ride.
  3. I'd say FIXED.  Well done Guido.

I just downloaded the Scenic app and running 2.2.7 and used it for the first time. After the first few voice guidance directions it stopped working. this occurred throughout the riding day. Is seemed to cut out after I was using intercom and when switching music stations. I was hands free using my Cardo Freecom 4 unit. I am set on device default. Using a iphone 6.

I suppose the Problem is the old device, iPhone 6 . This device doesn‘t have IOS 13.x

it‘s not able to upgrade  to IOS 13.x

It should just work with iOS12 too, but this helps for my analyses. I will take a further look at this in the coming week! What is your setting for 'Voice Output'? (Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Voice Output). ?

New Input:

Was working fine but now discovered the voice guidance cuts out when I am on SENA intercom with my 2-up.  I broke the intercom off and the voice prompt came back on with no intervention by me.  Intercom back on and voice prompt gone.

I-phone 7 plus latest release of Scenic. Is this a SENA SMH10R settings priority problem or is there a setting in Scenic for me.

I think it's both a SENA priority and a Scenic issue at the moment. This is the SENA priority according to the manual:

Scenic, when Settings > Sound & Haptics > Voice Output, is set to 'Device Default' is playing the instructions as music... thus lower priority than intercom. By choosing 'as Phonecall (HFP)' as output, the voice instructions will interrupt the intercom. You can give it a try... however... this is where the issue it at the moment (v2.2.7). Working on an update now to resolve this. Will hopefully have that ready by end of this week.

Update. I used the app today for a long ride. The voice guidance worked fine. The guidance worked well with music as well. The guidance stayed with me all day. Thanks

I have tested the 2.2.8 version some now and it does seem to work a lot better, nice!

It's not perfect though, it still happens for me that the voice guidance suddenly just dies, all the while music is playing as normal. Haven't been able to pinpoint when this happens. 🙁

For what it's worth I'm used a Cardo unit and also have an Apple Watch witch might interfere I guess. I have always left "Voice Output" to "Device Default", should I be using something else for a more stable experience?

 

You could try ‘as phone call’ but sound quality will be poorer and transitions from music to voice instruction will not be as smooth.

Meanwhile I’ll collect more feedback on this to see why this is happening. Have not had any other issues reported to me on 2.2.8.

I took a 222 mile trip yesterday and it worked great.  I had the voice output set to as a phone call at first.  It was a very clunky transition from music to voice guidance, so I switched it back to the default and it worked flawlessly.  Even when the speed limit audible warning would go off, it would return the music to original level.  I have a Sena 10s and using the 2.2.8 version.

As far as I am concerned, this is fixed for me!

I also have an Apple Watch 4 with LTE and I use an iPhone 11 Pro and no problems since 2.2.8(beta 4). As a Bluetooth device I‘m using Sena 10U. No interference coming  up.

Everything works fine now.

I have to agree that the voice guidance is good now and the general problem is definitely solved.

What I'm experiencing now on a couple of occasions seems to be a much more specific bug. I'm generally using the dynamically generated round trips and I have detour behaviour set to recalculate. I'm not sure what the bug is and under what conditions it actually triggers but that's my setup. The voice sometimes, quite rarely, just gives up and it seems to be while it's trying to come up with a detour/recalculation. The map still shows a route, I just don't get any more voice guides.

Running 2.2.8 and voice refuses to work. Thought maybe it was my Sena but I ran the following setup

phone only/speaker

voice for one credit

still no luck so I removed and reinstalled app. Completely default setup and still no voice.

If none of this helps could you let me know when are you powering up the Sena? Is that before or after you tapped the ‘start’ button? Perhaps you could give both a try, completely closing scenic through the app switcher between the tries? (Have topped you up to 25 credits so you can try more times)

if that also doesn’t seem to work let me know and I’ll give you premium for a week so you can try with that.

also, seems to be something wrong with the picture you uploaded. I guess it’s a screenshot of your sound & haptics settings? Could you upload again please?

Definitely  something not ok. I’ll have a look at that. Where do you generate the round trip? In start screen or in route editor through routes tab?

Meanwhile you could try ‘Go Back’ as detour behavior. That might make a difference as that generally has faster recalculation.

Tried setting a finish location and generating a route. Also tried the detour just now. Something I noticed is that when I adjust the volume there is no count down. I see there’s a message about adjusting the volume using hardware buttons during countdown.

One more thing, I do hear the beeping and other sound effects.

I generate it from the start screen. I wasn't even aware that it could be done from the route editor until you mentioned it in another post, some days ago.

I can try with the different detour behaviour. The reason I had it chosen is because the generated trips sometimes try and take you down private roads (not your fault I assume, depends on the map provider).

In most cases I setup and activate the gps before turning on the Sena. All the testing I’m doing today is with just the phone. No Bluetooth.

Ok. Have given you premium for a week. Do a pull-to-refresh in the me tab to activate it. See if that makes a difference voice wise?

Wow... OK. If that's really the reason then that's a big bug. If this is really the cause I would have expected more feedback about this, but I guess it's still possible. In any case, happy it's working now for you. I'll go through the code in the coming week and do some more testing myself to see if I can find and fix it for the upcoming update. i know that enhanced or individual voices sometimes cause problems. I had that with riser.

Could be, but I honestly doubt it. It's also not to do with being premium or not (I think that might have been a coincidence. I could not reproduce that at least. I got voice no matter I was premium or I was using a credit.

@tragicallynuts... have you tried all things mentioned in the link I posted earlier? (changing voice is one of them)

Yes. I tried everything.   I’ll take a short trip tomorrow and test if the voice remains or any other issues pop up. I’m thinking it’s all good now

After having this problem too the last 3 rides i decided to register on the forum.

App 2.2.8, recalculate route, sound via earphones. After disabeling and enabeling voice the voice is back but not today after the second time.

After a short stop in “Vlimmeren” voice for navigation stopped but when speeding the warning voice worked. After disabling and enabling the navigation voice was back but not for long. Taking a few other roads for taking a shortcut there was no more guidance only warning when speeding.

Phone locked, back to previous waypoint.

Could you tell me a bit more about your setup? Hopefully that will help me solve this problem. Specifically...

  1. Could you send a screenshot of your Sound & Haptics settings?
  2. Are you using a com set or bluetooth headphones or cabled headphones? If so, which one?
  3. Are you using Scenic in foreground or background?
  4. Are you premium, or are you paying with credit each time to get voice guidance?
  5. Did you manually pause the trip at the stop (used te pause button)? Or was it auto-paused?
  6. Did you go inside during the stop? Did you leave Scenic running?

Sorry for all the questions. I've already made some changes to voice for the upcoming update, but want to make sure I've covered all scenarios now.

3 background this time. Screen locked until starting after stop to look what direction to start.

6 no and yes. It was near a graveyard but being a adult i’m sure it doesn’t have an impact 🙂 ,scenic during te stop still in the background.
