Avoid unpaved setting
Quote from MLH on 20.05.2026, 05:27Is there a way to set “Avoid unpaved” to always be ON and “Transportation mode” to always be ‘motorcycle’ when planning routes? I have created a ‘My default’ saved preset, but have to apply it every time I make or use a route. Can I make it be the default for all occasions? I only use Scenic on the bike and I absolutely never, ever want to route via unpaved roads.

Quote from Guido on 20.05.2026, 06:57The setting will stay on what you set it to be. With one exception… if you import a route, then the setting will change to car standard.
“Why?” are hear you asking 🙂.
The reasoning behind this is that Scenic doesn’t know what kind of GPX you are importing and what kind of route it contains. It can be anything. The GPX does not contain any clue for this. So, it uses the default car routing as that’s what works best for most routes.

I understand this and also have this issue sometimes.
How about letting the person decide himslef, if he wants to have Car or his default value while importing?
Or maybe after Import, asking the simple Question, "Would you like to change the Transportation Mode?"
Or even better, "Please choose a Transporttion Mode" and only after choosing, will Scenic carry on doing it's Magical stuff.
Whatever, thanks Guido for all the work you are always doing and the fast answers you give, even to the dullest of us:-)

[Avoid unpaved toggle]
I was with Mike and watched him turn this setting off several times only for it to self activate again with no changes to the route, just closing and reopening the routing settings It was bizarre and not a little frustrating. I had no such issues with my iOS beta Scenic. Maybe Mike should remove then reinstall Sccnic?

OK, understood. All my routes were generated on my iPad and then used on iPhone. Nevertheless, every time I opened a route, immediately after first use or hours later, Scenic immediately returned the’Avoid unpaved’ setting to OFF. I first noticed this at the end of a long very, very badly broken surfaced lane when looking at a closed wooden gate. And then again 5 minutes after restarting my route and finding it still really didn’t want to send us by any route other than through the aforementioned gate.
In future any route I put together will have as many via stops as possible, Atticus Cat style, to avoid this situation.

To be fair to Scenic, this was a legitimate road to navigate. I checked the OSM data and looked at it on Google Streetview. It just looked like a bit of off road because of farmer activity bringing the fields onto the tarmac. Doesn’t account for the no unpaved setting refusing to stay set.

If that really happened then that's a bug. There have not been any code changes to this though for quite a while, so your beta and latest App Store versions have the same code for this.
Please note that if you reload the route, the routing settings with which the route was saved will be loaded again (and would overwrite any previous routing settings). Maybe that's what happened?

I could change this and just not switch to car. Simply leave it on the routing mode it was on at the time of import. That would be the easiest change, and maybe also better to comprehend and there would be no unexpected / automatic change.

Yes, though, you’re right.Doesn’t account for the no unpaved setting refusing to stay set.Indeed. In order to (hopefully) prevent this and a few other non-Scenic issues that I’ve getting occasionally, I wiped the iPhone and reinstalled iOS & the apps I wanted to keep. Which includes Scenic. Atticus introduced me to it a while back and these problems notwithstanding, it’s good.

I think this could be it. Instead of editing the active route when things were going wrong Mike was killing the route, making the adjustments and starting a new ‘ride’. I mostly wasn’t editing (‘cos I was following) but when I did I edited the active navigation and never reloaded the route. My avoid unpaved settings remained as I normally have them.
Hopefully some of my (hard earned through personal experience) tutorial tips will help Mike edit within navigation in the furure.

It sounds a lot like it & not saving things will be a very hard habit to break ☹️
Atticus Cat’s advice & tutoring re: some of the facets of this very complex app has been very much appreciated and very useful too. Thanks dude 🙏
