Automation with Apple Shortcuts

I didn't see this feature request in the forum - hopefully didn't miss it so apologies if this is duplicated.

Including Scenic tasks to the Shortcuts app would be very handy to create automations like:

  • on bluetooth connect to helmet, Run Scenic app, start recording
  • on bluetooth disconnect, stop recording and save for motorcycle 1 in folder x

the use case i am thinking of is basically a moto journal which i currently do manually and sometimes forget to open the app and start recording

I've had the automation through Siri Shortcuts on the list for quite some time. Have not gotten around to it yet though, and I didn't thing of these automations yet, but I like it. I wil add it to the list as well. Thanks for the suggestion!

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

I've had the same idea, but the "bluetooth connect" automation requires user interaction. So it is basically useless.

You can use NFC. If the Phone is unlock and spot a NFC-Tag nearby, you can start a script. This Shortcut can start e. g. Scenic, switch to a suitable focus , change the volume, brightness and so on.

Or automatically have Scenic route to the next petrol station.

I've also noticed Scenic isn't recognised as a navigation app. E.g. when using the action "Open Driving directions from Current Location to Destination using <App>" I only have "CityMapper" and "(Apple) Maps" as options. Having "Scenic" there would be a great first step.

Apart from that there should be dedicated actions to open Scenic with a specific location or route and optionally start routing automatically. An action to add an entry to the vehicle log could come in handy as well. Switching map styles from Shortcuts might also be nice (e.g. during a long tunnel: "Siri, Scenic Extra Dark Mode!"). Or just a way to have Scenic start tracking the moment my helmet comms unit connects (and stop tracking on disconnect).

A few special uri schemes / universal links would be a nice start, too.

That looks like half of the Shortcuts implementation already. Awesome!

Hi,

the thread is some days old, I know, but the question is still open I think.

I was some days in Scotland.
We had a "Road-Captain" who navigated.
My plan was to record the routes BUT I forgot to start the recording almost every day.
So I lost a couple of kilometers every day.

Are there new solutions to start the recording, when bluetooth connects?
Anyone using "Scriptable"? Maybe there is a solution with Scriptable?

Hi Knuspermusli,

I was in the need for an absolutely „unforgettable“ solution to maintain a drivers log.
With all the great work Guido is busy with, I needed an alternative solution quickly and run into a little app called PSNGR (https://apps.apple.com/de/app/psngr-fahrtenbuch/id871087584).

the cool thing is, it works with a beacon. A little USB stick you associate with your account (you can use even multiple, for different vehicles you might have.

so as soon you power up your vehicle the beacon is recognized and the app starts recording. The little downside is, as the main purpose of the app is a legal tax related drivers log, it tracks every segment til your next longer stop as one single track. If you want to have a single track per day, you can online combine all those segments to a single tracks easily. You can export the recorded tracks and reimport them to scenic easy if that something needed, like in your scenario

the app is for free for 40 tracks (segments) a month. If you need more than these 40, you can either by an annual or just a month subscription..

works perfectly for me and the only one time invest was that beacon

most ideal would be scenic would have the ability to interact and recognize beacons (AirTags would not easily work) and you could assign a beacon to each vehicle your configure.

switching between vehicles, ride auto-start, stop, pause, statistic, alike would be simply a full automated process

but given the current upgrade to v4 and all the other enhancement requests, I do not expect this to be integrated into scenic any time soon, hence I am using a second app in the background to solve this
