I have had some Issues with planning as Scenic displays the german translation of the french Cities/villages when planning a tour in france.
Is it possible to set the map language to the region where the map is.
Thanks

The feature to select a preferred language for road names is still not working as expected after the 4.20 update.
On my iPhone the preferred language list is set to English but still the Road names in Scenic displays in the local language Arabic.

Quote from Guido on 15.06.2025, 12:24That probably means there is no English translation available for those cities. Typically only bigger places have translations. You can check on OSM if the places have translations… and add translations if you want: https://scenic.app/help/reporting-map-errors/

Yes, English translation is available for most roads and streets. Please see the attached screenshot from OSM maps for reference.

Quote from Guido on 16.06.2025, 10:14Hmmm. The road in your OSM screenshot is not tagged correctly. It looks like the Languages are written out in full. Here is a road (in Oman) that is tagged correctly. Notice the "en" in stead of "English". It should contain the language code, not written out in full. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Multilingual_names

Sorry Guido but I believe you may be mistaken or confused between multilingual road names and their associated tags. Most roads in Oman, the UAE, and other Middle Eastern countries already include multilingual names along with the appropriate language tags, as shown in the screenshot below. For example, the Emirates Road in the UAE has a multilingual name as well as the corresponding language-specific name tags.

Quote from Guido on 17.06.2025, 08:30Yes you are right. Apologies. But then I can’t explain why the Oman road shows the English name in the name:en tag, but the roads in UAE, that have that tag, do not.
I’d like to double check if the roads where you see the Arabic name have the name:en tag. Could you send me a coordinate from Scenic where you see the Arabic name? (Long press on map there > copy coordinates)
Also a screenshot of your preferred languages, and lastly, in v4.20 I added a setting to always show local language it defaults to preferred language list but if you accidentally turned that to local then it will show local language. It’s in Settings > Map Settings > Map language

I am using the latest 4.20 version. The Map Language is set to Preferred Language List which is only English on my iPhone.
As you can see in the below screenshots, the OSM maps includes English language tags but Scenic still displays the road names in the local language.
Below are the coordinates DEC: 25.134283,55.971718

Quote from Guido on 25.06.2025, 18:23Sorry for the delay.
All this time I assumed you were referring to road names on the map itself (like in my last screenshot above), but since I saw your latest screenshots I realized you were referring to the navigation instructions.
I have control over what language to show directly on the map. But, the navigation instructions come directly from the routing engine and I believe there is a bug there (or maybe it's not a bug but designed like this on purpose). The potential bug (or 'as designed') is that even though instructions are requested in the language to which you set your navigation voice (english for you I assume), and even though these streets have the name:en tag set, the street names and instructions returned, only contain the non-translated names (Arabic in this case).
The reason why I say this might be "as designed" because it would make sense to show the local name if the character set of local language is same as that of requested language (This way Scenic shows the same names as physical road signs). But I realize that this is not ideal if local language character set is different from requested language character set.
In any case, this is unfortunately out of my control. If it's considered a bug, I don't know if the bug is in the map framework or in the Valhalla routing engine integrated in the framework. I have sent a report to the map provider and will report back once I know more. If this is indeed considered a bug, and it is on map provider side, it can be fixed relatively fast. If this is a bug in Valhalla then I'm afraid it can take a lot longer.
Cheers,
Guido
