Premium Forever can’t be purchased anymore.
Functionality and Feature Requests
Will Scenic 4 do … ?
Scenic 4 will have the same functionality as Scenic 3, with some great improvements. With Scenic 4 we lay the base for future improvements. Some features are not yet implemented in Scenic 4. See below for which ones, when they will be added, and why.
CarPlay
CarPlay is just about finished. Some smaller features are still missing, which we are aiming to add during 2025.
When will speed cameras be available again?
We honestly expected a lot more feedback about this feature’s absence from Scenic 4 than we got, but we were wrong and since we set our priorities according to yours, this has been moved down the list. We are also switching to a new 3rd party provider for the speed cameras, which allows speed cameras for Germany and Switzerland too (were not available in Scenic 3). We were aiming for a release in July of 2025, but unfortunately, due to high volume of user questions and bug fixing, this will be moved to the fall of 2025..
Layers / ‘show on map’ panel
The layers feature was added back already in december 2024.
When will I be able to customize the map style again?
The Map Style Customizer was added back in v4.18 (released on May 1st 2025).
When will road closure information be available again?
Scenic 3 would display road closures on the map, but didn’t account for them in route calculations; we’re addressing this in Scenic 4 to ensure that you’re never caught off guard in the middle of a journey. This is aimed for Q4 2025.
When will the ‘discover routes’ feature be available again?
The Discover routes feature was added back already in January 2025.
3D mode
3D map mode was added back already in december 2024.
Why were/are the above features not delivered with Scenic 4 from the start?
Around April/May 2024, Scenic 3’s map provider, HERE Maps, put me in an impossible situation that would mean the end of Scenic by October 1st 2024. No more Scenic app! Of course, that’s the last thing I want. I don’t want to leave all my users out in the cold. So, I had no choice but to migrate Scenic to the new provider much earlier than I wanted and much faster than typically required. I would have preferred to keep Scenic 3 around longer while I worked on these features, but ‘the powers at be’ at HERE did not want to give me more time. You can find more ‘juicy’ details in the ‘Scenic 4, the whole story’ blog post.
My data
What happens to my data? My routes, rides, locations, POIs, vehicles, etc.?
They will still be available in Scenic 4, just like in Scenic 3.
Will my routes become different?
They might. The new map provider has a different route calculation algorithm and offers more routing modes. The new algorithm may take different roads between waypoints, a possibility that is low on routes with many waypoints. Still, I recommend checking a Scenic-3-created route before heading out on a ride with Scenic 4.
What happens to my offline maps?
You will need to download offline maps again. Your old offline maps will be removed on Scenic 4’s first launch because the HERE offline maps don’t work with the new provider.
The new offline maps are a lot more detailed and, as a result, also a lot bigger in size. I recommend only downloading the regions you use frequently. There is no reason to download all US states or all the European countries unless you ride in all those states/countries all the time. With your premium subscription, you can download and redownload offline maps at any time, as needed. Downloading entire continents is a concept that comes from older navigation units like the Garmin Zumo and TomTom Rider, which required purchasing maps by continent. This no longer applies to modern navigation apps like Scenic.
Will it run?
Will it run on my old iPhone / iPad?
I try to make Scenic support as many devices as possible but to use new iOS features and new and more efficient programming techniques; I have to bump up the minimum supported iOS version every now and then. For Scenic 4, the minimum requirement is iOS 16.4. This means that Scenic can run on iPhone 8 and newer. Here’s more info on the minimum supported iOS version per device: https://iosref.com/ios
Other FAQs
I see Russian/Chinese/Arabic/Cyrillic names on the map. Can I change that?
Yes. Have a look at this help article.
Can I set a default routing mode?
Scenic 4 remembers your last routing mode and will apply that to new routes, until you change the mode again. Additionally, you can save your favorite routing modes into presets so you can always return back to them.
Can I roll back to Scenic 3.5 temporarily?
I’m afraid that’s not possible. The App Store does not support such a feature. More importantly, the contract with HERE maps ended, so even if you could roll back, the maps would not be available.
