Zoom feature when approaching a turn
Quote from dcumpian on 26.08.2024, 12:40When approaching a turn from one road to another, the zoom feature is nice, BUT, it doesn't actually include the turnoff point in the zoom. In fact, the zoom pushes the turn off the screen. It would be great if the zoom could focus on the turn point rather than where I am at the moment. Just returned from a 17 day trip using Scenic and it worked wonderfully, except for the 3 or 4 times I missed a turn because I couldn't tell which one I should take.
One other note, I noticed many highways did not note whether I should be going east/west or north south. Having that information in the top bar would help when approaching a cluster interchange.
Best Regards,
Dan

Quote from johansw on 26.08.2024, 14:58I assume you use the Speed based zoom. You can set the zoom level for various speeds: Settings / Fine tuning / Speed-based zoom customization. Here you can increase the metres set. I use 1.000 m as minimum at low speeds 🙂

Quote from dcumpian on 26.08.2024, 15:43Let me preface this reply by saying I'm using all default settings. The zoom I'm talking about does not appear to have anything to do with speed. I'm not slowing down for these turns from, for example, Rt 6 West to Rt 11 North (I made these up). It's the default zoom that occurs as the turn gets close. The zoom ends up pushing the actual turn point offscreen, and when there are multiple roads interchanging at the same point, it can be really difficult to see which exit I'm supposed to take.

Quote from Guido on 27.08.2024, 11:45With turn-based zoom, the next turn should not disappear off the screen, of course. Is it completely off the screen, or is it hiding behind one of the labels or other elements on the screen?
In any case, I will look into this for the big Scenic update that will be released in October.

Quote from dcumpian on 27.08.2024, 13:29Unfortunately, it is completely off the screen. I think part of the problem is the zoom is so "zoomed" (if you will), like when you pass a VIA point. A lesser amount of zooming might be all it takes to fix it. An important point that may also be contributing to the issue is I have my phone setup horizontally, because of a tank bag in the way 😉
I will take a look at the speed based zoom settings and see how they work in the meantime.

Quote from Guido on 27.08.2024, 13:36Ah... your via point remark triggered me.
Indeed, at the moment, when you get close to a via point or a stop, Scenic is treating this as a turn for the turn-based zoom. In other words... when your get close to a via point or a stop, the map also starts zooming in. After you passed the via point stop, the map will zoom out again, unless the next turn is closeby. That's very likely the reason why the actual turn after the via point is falling of the screen.
For now, until the big update is out, I recommend (if possible) placing via points around 50 or 100 meters AFTER a turn, so not before a turn. And/or place them in the middle of a long stretch giving Scenic the time to zoom out again after the via point.

Quote from dcumpian on 27.08.2024, 16:32Honestly, I generally put via points a couple of miles past any turns, just because I'm just used to building routes that way to force the desired route. It is possible that one or more of these were closer to the interchanges, but that's not how I usually build my routes.
Like I mentioned earlier, the horizontal layout may be a part of the issue, since there is less actual screen space to zoom with.
I do truly appreciate your responses though. One of the best features of Scenic is your support 🙂

Quote from HyperMulti on 27.08.2024, 17:27Similar feedback. In addition, I wish there was a zoom setting that just worked like Google Maps. I've been playing with a custom zoom setting and just can't really get it to work as nice as I'd like. I want it 'good and far out' when I'm cruising at 70mph and nice and close as I approach and slow (especially at complicated intersections—with what lane I need to be in). Turn base is about the best as I can get for now.

Quote from Middelfrangge on 05.09.2024, 13:33Hi Guido,
I had a similar experience as HyperMulti with the speed based zoom and tried therefore the turn-based zoom. What was strange to me was, that there was still a speed based zoom although the setting was turn-based. I would expect that as a stable zoom till reaching the next turn and therefore I was missing a possibility to manually change my zoom level which I would like to have as basis and to which it returns after a turn.
Is something like that included in your update? If so - nice, otherwise I would wish to have at least the zoom in/out buttons when using turn-base zoom.
thanks
Thomas

Quote from Guido on 05.09.2024, 15:15Hi Thomas,
It's correct that there's a speed-based component in the turn based zoom as well. However, in the HERE framework this is not configurable so i can't add zoom buttons when turn based zoom is selected, they wouldn't work.
The default zoom behaviours will be better in the big update, and there will be better configuration optiosn, but you won't have the zoom buttons when turn based or speed based zoom is selected. I might add those later.
Best regards,
Guido
