WunderLINQ - starting a route

I’ve tried to see if this has been requested and not found anything, but I apologise if it already has.

Will we get the ability to browse, choose and start a route using WunderLINQ?  I often put on my non-touch heated gloves and then realise I’ve forgotten to choose and start the route. Being able to do this with the WunderLINQ would really help in this situation.

Another useful thing would be an on screen keyboard that can be navigated with WunderLINQ, to allow searching for destinations without having to touch the screen. This is low on my personal priority list though as 99.9% of the time I’m navigating a planned route rather than doing A to B routing.

At the moment this is not possible, but I'll add it to the feature request list. I can't say anything regarding when this will be available. There are many things on the feature request list (some with higher priority), so it might take quite some time. Sorry.

Thanks Guido  Appreciate you have a lot going on

I’m just looking to minimise screen touches. It’s the biggest drawback to using a phone. Even with “touch screen compatible” gloves they’re not always reliable or accurate in their touches.

We also tend to have multiple gloves and can’t afford to go replacing them just to make them phone compatible. The tips to make non-touch gloves compressor are also hit and miss.

I’ll probably get into a routine of starting the route before putting my gloves on, but that’s going to take a while to break a decades old habit of starting the route when I’m on the bike and ready to go.

Hi,

yesterday I received my Wunderlinq, at the first try I realize that I can‘t browse in my routes and start on of them with the wonderwheel. That‘s the most important function….

at his actual limited functions, the wunderlinq makes no sense, will send it back…. Really disappointing

I understand that the first impression might seem a bit strange, but there is a reason for this / thought behind it.

Scenic focuses on enabling WunderLINQ functionality WHILE RIDING! Selecting a route is typically something you do before you start riding, and thus can do with the touch screen, before putting on your gloves.

Hope that makes sense.

Best regards,

Guido

I‘m sorry but this makes no sense to me. Imagine you stand on a red light, whould it be not nice to just choose another gpx and start the navigation without going to neutral, gloves off and so on?

at this stage I can‘t see any plus points for scenic and wunderlinq

It does a great job of it too. Neither I nor my wife would be without our WunderLINQs.  They make it so easy, combined with Scenic, to do most stuff once on the move.

One of the big advantages that we like, over and above the zooming in/out or setting up detours or skipping waypoints, is that we have the WunderLINQ left and right actions configured in Scenic to pause music or skip the track. The usual response by people is “why waste buttons instead of using the intercom buttons for that?”, but the WunderLINQ actions are so much easier than trying to locate the tiny intercom buttons with massive winter gloves. It also means keeping the hand on  the bars and doing it instinctively, rather than diverting some attention to trying to find the intercom button and getting frustrated.

I have a lifetime subscription to MRA navigator, but honestly never use it even though you can browse and start routes in MRA using WunderLINQ. The “In flight” WunderLINQ usability in Scenic is so much better and worth the trade off of having to remember to start the route before putting our gloves on.

That says a lot, given we do all our route planning in MRA, as in our opinion it’s by far the best route planner. It does mean we have to plan in MRA, import into Scenic, and then fix the route discrepancies as there’s usually a few places where Scenic chooses a different path. However, that’s easy as Scenic shows the original imported route path so you can see deviations. All that taken into account, we still prefer Scenic for navigation. Now if scenic had a web based route planner similar to MRA…

The music option is already on my BMW TFT screen, so I see no use for this case for the WLQ.

The PowerPlaner of Scenic is wonderful routplaner, I use it on my iPad which is really great! No need to check the route after import is a great function....

I´m really disappointed with the WLQ, especially by there own message on the website: Wunderlinq support for COMPLETE user interface control

Of course you are free to send it back. But, before you do, might I suggest giving it a few tries on a few rides. If you still don’t like it, by all means send it back.

Im not trying to sell the WunderLINQ. I do not get any financial kickback at all from WunderLINQ. I can only speak from my own experience and from what I’ve heard from the Scenic community over the years, which has been nothing but positive.

Then again, we are not all the same. We all use our bikes, our apps and gadgets in different ways. What works for one might not work for another. As the developer of Scenic I’ve learned that lesson over and over again over the years 🙂.

Im always willing to make changes to Scenic if it makes sense for a group of people. I’m currently working on a big update in fact. The WLQ integration has also been slightly updated in that update. Although still not possible to select a route while riding. Who knows… if I get more request for that… I’ll add that in the future too.

Thanks for answer Guido.

The only reason why I bought the wunderlinq was the idea of using the wonderwhell for the whole app. All other functions are not useful for me.

I know you got a lot to do with the app and the changes, but this last experience let me think about a whole change of my nav solution. Maybe the new BMW Connected Navigator....I will lost the brilliant Scenic PowerPlaner, but with this device I can control all needed actions by the wonderwheel.

Maybe, in a few years, your app will be that powerful that all requierements of your customers will be included 🙂

Imagine you stand on a red light, whould it be not nice to just choose another gpx and start the navigation without going to neutral, gloves off and so on?

Could you help me understand the real life scenario for this use case? Why and how frequently would you want to start a route or replace the route you were riding by another saved route, while you are riding or standing at a stoplight?

Not trying to be a jerk, just really would like to know!

For me personally, in the way I use my motorcycle (mostly day trips and weekend trips) this is not something I would do very often. And if I did, I typically would want to take a better look at the map and surroundings anyway, so I’ll stop and take off my gloves.

Hi Guido,

no problem, all good. Let me explain better 🙂

I´m near the alps, planing routes with 300km, 500km and sometimes more. The routes are at the beginning identical, but one goes this mountain path left and the other goes the mountain path right. So one "ground route" idea with a few options that I will choose when I´m there at the crossing.

Hopefully you get my thought 🙂

OK. Got it.

I'll add this to the feature request list. I'm planning a redesign of, amongst others, the "where to" dialog in the future. At that time I will see if I can add some basic remote control feature to it as well.

Best regards,
Guido
