What is the benefit of CarPlay

Hello together,

this is a general question to carplay and is independant from scenic.

I read a lot of carplay posts and therefore I was looking for the using of it. But when I am right, this just means, I have a bigger screen on the bike. Furthermore I need my mobile phone to run scenic and run the Navigation . So, which benefit Do I will get using a car play unit?

Thanks for your answers,

Frank

Benefits:

  • Bigger screen
  • Better weather protection
  • No expensive phone mounted on the bike that can be damaged by vibration and/or be stolen from the bike
  • You can keep your iPhone in your pocket / no need to put phone on bike every time you get on it
  • Brighter screen / better to see in direct sunlight (if you have a good unit)
  • Some CarPlay units come with a remote control to put on your handlebar which allows you (limited) control without taking hands of the handlebar

Drawbacks

  • Limited functionality: CarPlay user interface is limited (by Apple), and not all features are avaialable... although the most common ones used for navigation are)
  • Another device on your bike / another device that can fail / another device you have to drag around when get off the bike (or leave it on the bike with risk of it being stolen)
  • More complicated connection between CarPlay unit, phone and headset.
If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Hey Guido,

thanks for this detailed answer, there is no question open. Now, I have think about it; maybe the next gadget 🤣.

Greetings Frank

Hi Frank.

More benefits are:

Switch between Apps, myRadar for weather, Spotify for music (in case you like to listen), fuel stations, etc.

Of course carplay is just mirroring your cellphone, but makes it much easier to handle and IMO safer than touching the screen of your phone while riding. In my case (Chigee AIO-5) i have a handlebar remote. Attached you see my settings in carplay:

  • Obviously in German, but symbols should be known to everyone.

Ride safe, Mex

I bought a Carpuride W702 ( not the BMW mount version) and it is actually a really nice item. Seems well made and works very well, and the screen visibility is excellent. For navigation, it is a real help to have the bigger screen. Two things that make it desirable, though not essential: the first is that it keeps the phone on me, rather than on the bike. If I come off the bike and it goes one way and I go the other, I'm not separated from my phone to make an emergency call. The phone could still be damaged, but I think it is better in a jacket pocket. Because the Carpuride connects to the phone, all the CarPlay / Android auto stuff shows on the screen.

If vibration damage to the phone is a concern, this likely reduces that potential, even with the Quad Lock and vibration dampening mount. The phone lasts most of the day and if I need to charge it, I just put it back on the handlebar mount for an hour or so.

The other very happy thing I found is that typically, if my phone goes to 'sleep', Hey Siri does not work with the Cardo Packtalk Edge (or Bold) so I can't make a call or send a text without unlocking the phone. With the Carpuride, I can have Scenic or whatever on the phone doing the navigating and even with the screen off, 'Hey Siri' works perfectly. That is a total bonus. I don't usually listen to music when I ride, but streaming apps/ services work, like Deezer and SimpleRadio.

I don't use it all the time, but for trips, it is a really nice, if non-essential, gadget.

An addition. There are also handlebar controllers available with which you can control basic functions of Scenic ON YOUR IPHONE (so without a CarPlay unit): https://scenic.app/help/handlebar-controllers/

When using an external controller with Scenic in Carplay, then we have learnt, that the display needs to be always switched On, showing the Carplay mirroring logo.
Is there any possibility to prevent my display from image retention in this case? I already use the dark mode and decrease the brightness, during navigation. But is there anything else which can be done, such as a screen saver, for changing this static idle screen into a moving one?

Regards

Volker

I'll add it to the list. Workaround until I have time for this.... turn brightness of your screen very low.
