Voice Notifications Skipped
Quote from ronin-on-vulcan on 03.09.2022, 14:34Hello,
Thanks for the app, love it, many great features.
Noticed a minor "glitch" potentially, but I am not 100% sure how to reproduce.
When you ride on a highway or roady the app tells you "Continue on the road for 10 miles" assuming that there will be a turn in 10 miles. Then for some reason left or right turn warnings like "in a quarter of mile make a left turn" are skipped and the app gives a notification "make a left turn now"
So the expected behavior:
- Continue on the road for 10 miles
- In 2 miles make a left turn
- In a quarter of mile make a left turn
- Make a left turn now
In reality:
- Continue on the road for 10 miles
- Make a left turn now
This behavior is reproducible probably every other trip or so. Unfortunately I cannot tell in what specific condition the app skips those preliminary warnings.

It could have something to do with via points. If you have two consecutive via points without a turn instruction in between, this can lead to an instruction that the via point is approaching.
I recommend placing via points after junctions, not before.
let me know if that doesn’t help.
best regards,
guido

So you were right I guess about a pin, it was dropped right before right turn to a ramp in this case and I clearly remember how I had to make this turn without a voice prompt. I understand your mitigation strategy, but is it possible to fix the problem with voice prompts in the long run? When I drop a pin at the entrance of a city I do not know when the app will decide to make a left or right turn so it is hard to predict essentially the situation when pin is dropped right before an intersection.
Another (potentially non-related scenario) case when I noticed a voicer prompt issue - I had my music playing in Spotify and along the route there were several occasions when the music was muted but actual voice guidance was not announced by the app (I was approaching a turn), once I passed a point the music resumed as normal.
Hope this makes sense.
Thank you again.

Quote from Guido on 04.09.2022, 15:22This only happens if there are two consecutive via points without a turn instruction in between. So, I'm guessing via point 3 was somewhere before on the same road?
I'm afraid I can't change this, as this is a 'feature' of the HERE map/routing framework, where it announces upcoming via points. I suppress those, but that obviously holds back the actual voice instruction you would want to here. In the fall/winter I'm migrating to the new HERE framework. Perhaps the new framework will give more options to deal with this. Not sure yet.
Regarding the other issue... I actually had the same problem today with Waze while listening to a podcast in Overcast. It might be an iOS bug. I will look into it.
Best regards,
Guido

You are right, there are no turns in between #3 and #4. So this could be the culprit.
My hope is that the upgrade will fix the problem. Will keep my fingers crossed.
Thank you for looking into it.

just for fun here is a screen shot travelling across Australia Turn right in 1,199 km!

🤣 And I thought we had some long roads here in the US...
