v4.20 How to use road block feature

Hi Guido, is there a short tutorial an how to use the road block feature. I am currently unsure of what the keypoints are.

  • Do I have to „draw“ the block line as a closed line? In other words, does it matter for functionality if the block line has gaps in it?
  • How long must the block line be?
  • What happens, if on a blocked segment there lies a via or stop point? How does scenic handle this? Will it keep constantly try to route me back to this point? Or does this depend on the general detour settings as well (which might be just the same)?

Yesterday I had this situation and I was NOT aware of a via point which was lying in the blocked segment. After a while we were back on the original route and scenic constantly wanted us to go back. Until I realized the via point „behind“ and manual deleting it solved this.

The detour itself did not work as I would have expected that. I drew a line for some km, the line was not closed because I thought, some blocked elements would be enough of preventing scenic to guide me through blocked parts.
But there was no detour guidance, so it looked like scenic still ignored the blocked elements.
I would expect this: After setting a block line, scenic recalculates and draw a new magenta routing line which will lead back onto original track AFTER the last block element (if the block line has gaps in it) in a suitable way.
And it would be very smart if scenic would popup, saying: „via point detected on blocked segment. Would you like to delete this point?“ 😊

There is no tutorial at the moment. Sorry. In the fall, when the season is winding down, I will have less day-to-day task and can work on these kind of things.

To block road segments, simply tap on the map. To unblock them, either tap the "undo" button which will unblock the last one that you blocked. Or tap again on that road segment. When you tap "done" Scenic will recalculate the route excluding the blocked roads. However, if there is a via point ON a blocked road, that via point will "win" over the blocked roads. So, at this moment, you need to manually skip or delete the via point. You can easily do that in the same view. Tap the via point and the tap 'delete' in the bubble that appears.

So... your expectation is correct. It should work like you said... (new route calculated after tapping done). In my tests it worked like that, so I'm not sure what happened in your case where it did not recalculate. I will investigate.

Hi Guido, I just did some testing with a random planned route. Following happened: When I block a segment which is close to my actual position, I get the track rerouted after tappig done. When I instead (I deleted the closer block of course) set a blocking which is more far away then I get no rerouting after tapping Done.
I cannot see a rule regarding the distance of the blocking segment in order to say when will a rerouting happen and when not.
In my case (initial posting) I am sure the first block was set pretty close (because I was standing in front of the road closure), but maybe this observed behavior gives a hint where to investigate…

Hmmm. OK. I will investigate.

Just to chime in here that I tried to use the feature today and it wasn't very intuitive. The prompt says to block segments tap the road or use the buttons. What buttons is it talking about? When I tapped the road section that was blocked, nothing happened. Is there supposed to be any visual feedback? It seemed to be doing nothing at all for me. Do rerouting when I pressed done. I'm sure there was a via point on the road because it was an imported route from Furkot - so there are via points on every road! The only thing I could do what find a point further on the route past the blocked section and navigate to there using Google maps.

I found undo and done as the only options quite confusing. Undo what?

Yes. Once I have a bit more time I will investigate this. Apart from UI confusion, this feature is not always working as it should.

Another „experience“ from road block feature (meanwhile v4.23 of scenic)

Road blocked, so I stopped the bike and entered the blocked road.
No recalculation, scenic keeps routing into the blocked, see screenshot, where the blocked element has a white line as overlauy. Btw, I was standing right at the junction, not where the symbol shows, as this was in a forest surrounding.

I took direction to the right.
There was NO recalculation at all. The whole time while I was detouring.
Detour setting is: first option from the top. Recalculation was NOT deselected.

After a while I came back on my route some km further down an scenic did NOT recognize this. I followed „visually“ the route.
Shortly before destination I took this screenshot, where you can see that scenic still assumes being 36min away from destination.

So, my main points are:

- Road Block does not work as supposed

- Even after being back on route scenic did not realize this and did just nothing except kept tracking

For ME, road block is an essential function and I still can‘t use it.
Speed cameras for example is useless for me because it’s use is forbidden by law here. So my personal priority would be very high on the road block feature and very low on the speed camera feature. Just my few cents…

v4.23

Yes. I'm investigating the road block feature. Scenic not recognizing you got back on route might have something to do with your Detour Behaviour settings. If you this set to "do not recalculate" it should recognize it. For the other settings it will only recognise this if you join the route BEFORE the first unreached waypoint.

I have this settings for detour behavior. Sorry it’s in german, I thought it might be better to make screenshots than translating it somehow.
To make it complete: Between me (begin of road block) and destination was one via point after the road block. Scenic did not recalculate to this unreached point. I joined the route later after that point and „followed“ it to destination, meaning I followed the magenta line visually as there were no routing instructions at all after using road block feature.

Thank you. I’ll take a look. If it did not recalculate the route ar all with your settings then something is wrong. Also in your screenshot there should be a turn instruction at the top which there is not. I will investigate.

If you feel you need even more information on that I would try to give you this as far as possible (technically).
My suspicion somehow is, that detouring a road block depends on how „long“ the blocked segment is, meaning for example just one or two „taps“ or let’s say ten or more taps.
That’s why I asked for a tutorial on that, because it was not clear for me, should I just tap once to block only the initial part of the blocked road or should I „tap“ the whole blocked segment, as far it is known to me.
Anyway and personally, I do have a big interest in getting a robust and working road block feature like we had in earlier version (v3) of scenic.

Amendment: on the trip today when it came to a blocked road (3 times) I focused on setting only ONE block element.  Now Scenic detours as expected. And when detour is not satisfactory I set one (!) more block element on the detour. And again scenic detours as expected.
So I would say, a block too close to current position or setting many block elements inline in order to „visually“ block a longer segment results in a behaviour that no detour is calculated any more, instead it might be the case that scenic stops routing, even when returning back on planned route later.

This is great. It could help me solve this permanently. Thank you!
