Using Scenic on an unactivated iphone...

Hello!  Anyone using scenic on a non-activated iphone? I'm considering buying a used one just for use on my bars for navigation with Scenic - and keeping my "real" phone on my person. Can I get any carrier-specific (i.e. Verizon, or Sprint, or T-Mobile etc.) iphone (iOS 14 or higher) and use Scenic on it without ever activating it on any wireless network?

I do currently use my old iphone 5 to run Scenic 2 without issues - it's not connected to any carrier, but I bought it as an "unlocked" phone, never associated with any carrier to begin with...

I'm doing it with my old Iphone 6 and it works pretty well using the offline maps.

One think I notice is if you want to choose a curvy route that references other functionality that's not in the Scenic app, then you need an online connection to get it to work.  What I do is just hotspot from my regular phone and set the route, then disconnect and go. It works fine.

Thanks for the reply!  That's exactly what I'm doing now, too... but my old phone was an "unlocked" model, not tied to any carrier.

I'm specifically looking for confirmation of whether a model that was originally tied to a carrier will operate Scenic without being activated or in use by that carrier... or any carrier, for that matter.  I asked Guido about it, he replied:

Honestly I’m not sure how it works with those "locked to carrier" phones. I’d expect you could use it without SIM normally, but I’m not 100% sure on that.

... so I told him I would ask around before I go "all in" on a phone and mounting scheme.  I'm kind of assuming that this isn't really a Scenic-specific question, but more of a general iphone use question.  But I'm asking it here since my plan is to make it my Scenic moto navigation unit...

I took a chance and ended up buying a phone on the SWAPPA site; it was a good price, and the seller promised it would work as I require without activation.  In theory, there's a money-back guarantee if the phone isn't what was promised, so we'll see.  I'll report back with my results...

To follow up:  the "new" phone arrived, works great with no sim card. No unlocking or activation issues at all.  No promises that anyone else's experience would be the same, of course...
