Tired of the bugs and lack of effectiveness of the app.
Quote from Ricardo Costa on 28.01.2025, 08:22Expensive for the service it offers In August 2024 I bought the Scenic app, however a new version came out, due to the problem with the maps and app service, this is what we see, nothing works correctly, and I feel like I spent around €50 for nothing, I feel I feel defrauded for having spent this amount and not trusting the app because it is simply being developed according to the complaints or suggestions that users are saying. I have used other apps that are even free for when I plan to go on a trip, I simply don't trust Scenic, as I know it will cause problems, route deviations, lack of accuracy when traveling, etc, etc, etc, just search here on the forum so you can see the countless problems... I haven't deleted the app yet, because I want it to reach a point of completion. and I hope that there will be attention from Scenic when it comes to renewing the subscription, I don't expect anything other than to offer me a free year, as we have already had almost half a year of development and trial and error, and the app is as it is . These words are an outburst, from an unhappy customer, I hope they serve as encouragement to the app developers, to focus more and solve all these problems once and for all...

Gaia GPS is for free in basic like Scenic, then you may upgrade and pay like Scenic
Osmand use OpenStreet maps and I feel confident features etc here will be matched or better by Scenic using same suuplier.
Or am I wrong?
It is of course unfortunate with this beta-period due to reasons we all know by now, but we know Guido, so I stay put 🙂

Quote from Lo100469 on 31.01.2025, 08:31Can you please avoid writing in capital bolt letters? This is rude.
You state plenty of opinions, like performs badly, does not meet needs, is full of bugs but report nothing factual to improve those.
All you want is money which is not the spirit when you buy an app that is managed by a small business. Version 4 is working pretty well, not perfect, but 90% there. I did at least 3000kms of trips with it since November last year and all we faced are a few display glitches that most of the time disappear with a simple action. Every time i find an issue i report it back and it is being resolved pretty quickly.
I don’t know Guido, have no share or interest of any kind in his business and also paid for full subscription and i will renew it. If we all act like you, we will end with only generic free apps like Waze or Maps that are not addressing our needs for planning trips easily and work on CarPlay. I do not want to back to the Garmin app…

Laurent

For me this is not about money or anything else. I bought an application that for my economic parameters is an expensive purchase, and it doesn't do what I was used to. As I already mentioned, I understand Guido, but I think that as a paying user, I am being harmed, as I don't trust the app to plan a route, because as you can see in the topics, it is still full of problems. And in my opinion, this is not correct. If you buy a car and can't use it in your normal life, what do you do? You complain to the person who sold it to you... It's as simple as that.

Quote from Zoomer on 31.01.2025, 19:22Ricardo,
I have Scenic, REVER Pro and I'm playing with the free version of MRA. I agree that the rewrite of the app in the fall of 2024 created lots of problems; I also had many moments of frustration. But I think that Guido has done amazing things in a few months, having to rebuild the app. No, it is not perfect. But I think it is absolutely better than REVER, and the equivalent MRA system, for which you would pay for the web route planner AND the app, to get full functionality, would be much more expensive. For me, that would be about $275.00 Canadian, or € 180.00.
And while I can find annoyances in the Scenic mapping, the MRA mapping often shows unworkable routes; I know this because I've tried it in my own area.
You did purchase Scenic just before the source map problems, so that is really unfortunate. But the app is not full of bugs, it does do what it says, and with some practice and learning, is a very good navigation tool. Not perfect, but very good. For example, I think the auto zooming in the version 3 app was better than the zooming we currently have. Carplay in some rented cars was odd, and I hate the 'return to route start' button; or whatever that top button on the lower right when in navigation mode. It sent me screaming into the night on more than one occasion when I didn't realize I'd pressed it.
I've used Scenic in Canada, the US and in Italy, and it remains my navigation app of choice, based on cost, features and reliability. And while you criticized the development as being driven by user comments and complaints, I think that we all should realize that this shows that Guido is reading comments and acting on them, rather than dismissing our concerns. I accept that we're all Beta testers, in a way, for this stage of the application, but that is also resulting in a very rapid development and improvement curve.
Just my opinion, but I hope you will give Scenic a bit of time, as it does have a learning curve, but is a very good app.

Quote from Marts on 31.01.2025, 20:06Here's my take on Scenic.
You can plan rides. It saves a lot of data from those rides.
If you have a Mac you can run Scenic on the Mac (M1 and later models).
You can generate routes using the likes of MRA website, Google Maps and other GPX converters then import them into Scenic.
You have the developer personally talking to you.
It has off-line maps, entire countries or continents. I don't know which other apps do this. No doubt there are.
You can record a ride then save it for later use, export to share, etc..
It has CarPlay which works well.
I've tried a few apps before settling on Scenic. Maps-wise Google is probably your friend when it comes to accuracy but no doubt Scenic will be up there. But Google is a fairly basic navigator and its off-line capability is limited.
Don't ask me about Wayze. More of a show pony than a decent app. Encourages users to distract themselves from the task of driving/riding to add an update along their route (accident, broken down vehicle, roadworks, speed camera, etc.). And I've forgotten how many times it had me going around in circles the few times that I've used it.

Tranquilo. I am old. Based on many decades of backroad roads and bikes I never even tried any gps - ever - and am now back to my personal basics Half day route notes and schematic maps on top of tank bag. Lunch, memorize the tarde, go again…
I tried Garmin to see what the hell all the noise was aboutt. Sent us up and down pedestrian steps in every mountain pueblo in Andalusia. Several times onto a street too narrow to pass the damn mirrors. Basta!
Scenic turned up. Ran it through my weird needs filters. Signed up for ever. I will never go back to Garmin , Rever, etc, etc. Guido has scheduled the stuff I use to be back to previous level March or so.

Quote from clarkml72 on 01.02.2025, 21:40CarPlay still has issues even after 11 minor releases. my triangle icon, which represents me on route on the map for scenic is not accurate. I will be at a turn or a road or a curve, but the map shows me still not there buy a great deal also the full scenic window and CarPlay is in light mode, but if you switch to the CarPlay shared screen where you could have mini displays for Spotify, your map, etc. scene it goes to dark mode switch back to scenic full screen it goes to light mode. Finally when I was trying to track my route it starts in heads up meaning it’s keeping the route straight up on my screen, but if you switched to any other view or another app and come back, it’s broken and then it switches to I guess what you could call north up maybe Arrow shows me going down down the screen east and west it’s no longer heads up when I go to change that setting nothing works. I have to stop tracking and start it over and it works for a while but then it’s rinse and repeat.
I haven’t really been able to use scenic since version 4.0. I finally got to put it to the test with 4.11 and while it certainly is improved it’s still not as good as the latest 3.X was.
my subscription expires August 2025. I’m gonna give it until then

In the mean time due to the frustrating bug that takes me beyond my point by a mile or so and brings me back, or on my trip to Scotland last September took me off every single motorway junction to bring me back on the same, totally frustrating. So I'm currently using what 3 words then directions via google maps, this however is nowhere as near as the old scenic mapping tool. So here's hoping by July all will be fixed or it's another search from me for another mapping app. One final thing, it's quite annoying that I can't map a route on anything but my phone. It would be far easier to map the route on my Mac and use on my phone

Quote from clarkml72 on 02.02.2025, 09:36I'm lucky enough to have a first generation M1 MacBook Pro, so I can run the scenic app on a big old monitor which is great. I've left some critical messages about version 4 and the path to 4.11 just the other day. All that comes from simple frustration. I feel it is amplified frustration because I loved 3.x so much and used it a great deal. I along with everyone I'm sure knows why this happened and the impossible position G was put in.
I know version 4 will get there, but I have to put a cap on it and august 2025 is my renewal, I will have to make a decision at that point. I need CarPlay and I need the navigation, zooms, and travel orientations to work. My last post attempted to describe my ride this past Saturday with CarPlay, zoom, navigation and route "heads-up", "north-up", and it not working as it should.
The one that really got me is slight different than what most people have shared here, where you get "late" turn here audio and miss your exists, turns, etc. For me I am (USA GA.) setting the opposite of that, meaning I am coming up to intersections, turns and curves "early". I will stop at an intersection and have 50 - 60 feet yet to travel from what the scenic map /route shows. This cause when I turn for example for it to think I have missed and reroute, but ultimately picks up. It does this for everything.
So wanted to make sure I called that out as my stuff is early and most report late nativation...

It will have a side effect in junctions where you are supposed to turn (Scenic will think for a bit longer/ earlier that you are going straight in stead of actually turning). Try it out. Let me know what works best for you.

This isn't Scenic's fault. Intel based Macs cannot run iOS apps on them, only the later "Apple Silicon" chipped Macs can.
However, there is an alternative - Google Maps. Plan your route then copy the URL and paste it into Guido's web app on this site. It'll then process the map/route and import it into your online account. Go to Scenic on the iPhone and import it.

Quote from Vorarlberger on 10.03.2025, 11:57Unfortunately, I have to agree with Ricardo on almost all of the shortcomings he mentions. The old V3.x was an extremely good navigation system, but V4.15 is still barely usable. What is particularly annoying is that all routes planned with V3.x and also the recorded routes are no longer usable. But there are also far too many annoying bugs that distract too much from riding the motorcycle. (And I am a computer scientist by profession and understand how to use software.) To Guido: I have great respect for your achievements so far and I am sorry that you probably got into this situation through no fault of your own. I hope for all of us that you have the strength to bring Scenic back to its former quality soon. I loved your work and I´d like to love it in future!

Quote from Zoomer on 11.03.2025, 18:19On the CarPlay issue, I wonder if different car or motorcycle or hardware designs work differently with Carplay. For example, I use Scenic with Carplay in our Mercedes B250 (2017) with a wired connection. I also use it with my Carpuride W702 (not the BMW version) and I have had no issues with it at all. That is a wireless connection.
Last spring, of 2024, in Italy, I used the V3 app in a Skoda and a Fiat Panda, again with no problems. In the fall of 2024, again in Italy, I used Scenic in a different Fiat Panda and in an new MG something-or-other (MZ? MS?). I had some weird screen behaviour in the MG, but in the Fiat is was fine. (pic attached of the MG) This was in the earlier days of the V4 release. The centering was weird and the arrow kept moving off the screen. November 12th 2024 approximately, so an previous version.
My thought is only that there may be some interface or Carplay implementation differences that are hardware related, though I do not know why that would be.
I also had no issue getting V3 saved routes to show up in even the early V4 release. I think that older recorded rides did not come forward.
There are some things that I still have difficulty with, but I still think it is amazing that we are now on 4.15 after less than 6 months of reworking the app.

Yes. This is definitely true, and what makes it so difficult to reproduce the problem and find a fix. There is a difference in wired and wireless connections and also differences between manufacturers in the way and order they send notification. (notifications like “CarPlay connected”, “scenic active on CarPlay full screen”, “scenic active on CarPlay split screen”, “CarPlay is on dark mode”, “scenic no longer active on split screen”, etc Apart from that, a navigation session needs to continue on Phone if disconnecting from CarPlay, and needs to be taken over again on CarPlay if reconnecting.
Apart from that there is CarPlay with the button bar on the left, on the right and at the bottom (square/portrait layout), and there are big screens, small screens, screens with all kinds of resolutions. Unlike iPhone development, where this is all more or less handled by iOS, for CarPlay quite some additional code has to be written to deal with all these scenarios. That’s what makes CarPlay more difficult.
OK… enough complaining on my part 🙂
I might have some good news. I’ve been looking into it today, and tested with all 5 of my CarPlay setups, and I was not able to reproduce the issue anymore after I made some changes. I’ll put this version in beta test tomorrow and hopefully that will confirm my assumption that it’s now been solved. If so, I’ll try and get an update out there before the weekend.

Karlchen
