Synch Routes created on iPad to iPhone not working

First of all, I like the app.

At the moment I discovered a problem synching routes from my iPad to the iPhone. I’ve checked the previous comments here in the forum but nothing helped. I’m using the same account, forced the synch (pull-down) on both devices but the routes created on my iPad did not show up on the iPhone. Logged out from both devices and on again made the new routes disappear from the iPad too. Then I created a new route on the iPad did not synch either. To me it looks like the synch iPad —> Server does not work at all. Any help?
Routes created on the iPhone do show up on the iPad.

The syncing logic on iPhone and iPad is exactly the same, so that should not be the problem.

If, after a logout/login, the routes disappeared from iPad, this means that the routes never made it to the server. This is quite strange, especially since your connection seems to be OK because it's pulling the iPhone-created routes to your iPad.

A couple of things to check:

  • Are you running the same Scenic version on both devices? You can see version number at bottom of settings. Latest version is v3.63. If not, update through the app store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1089668246
  • Are you running a VPN on your iPad? If so, try turning it off. VPNs can sometimes interfere with outgoing or incoming data streams.
  • Are iPad and iPhone on the same wifi?
  • Are iPad and iPhone set to the same time?
  • After you save the route on iPad, but before you do a pull-to-refresh on the iPhone, do a pull-to-refresh in the route list on the iPad. This shouldn't be necessary, but if, for some reason, the upload was not completed during route save, this will again attempt to sync the route to the server.
  • Wait a minute or so, and then do a pull-to-refresh on the iPhone
  • Try with a small test route first

Hi Guido, thanks for the very fast response, I really appreciate it. Here are my results:

- both devices are on version 3.63
- both are connected to my home WLAN (which is a trusted WLAN in the VPN app, thus VPN is disabled when I’m connected to this WLAN)
- both are on the same time

I did the following two tests:

1. Made a change to the route on iPad, which I had created just 1 hr ago a which did not synch. Save, pull-to-refresh (on iPad) - waited 2 mins - pull to refresh on iPhone - nothing appeared. Deleted the route on the iPad.

2. Created a new route on the iPad, saved it, pulled-to-refresh, waited 2 mins, pulled-to-refresh on iPhone - and it came across. Deleted it on the iPhone - pulled-to-refresh (iPhone first, then iPad) - disappeared from iPad. That’s how it should be.

Created 2 more new routes, one on iPad, one on iPhone with the same steps - both came across correctly.

Seems that whatever blocked it before got resolved - even though I can’t see why.

More to add:

I had created and synched 3 new routes (created on iPad with just Start and End point each) - all 3 synched properly.

Then I started changing them (one by one on the iPad by adding 2-3 stops to each, always saved and pull-to-synch directly after each change on the iPad) - waited a bit and then tried to pull on the iPhone - 2 of them made it - the 3rd did not synch the changes. Tried several changes to get it synching that one again - without success, deleted and recreated it - and it was synching.

When it stops synching a particular route the only solution seems to be deleting and creating from scratch - which can be disappointing for routes with many points…

I was just looking at the server logs and usage data. From that perspective, everything seems fine and within limits.

This must be a bug in the syncing logic app-side. From what you're saying, it seems like the changes are no longer being propagated to the server. It's weird that it only happens sometimes / with some routes. I'll do some testing and look into this in more detail later this week. I'll report back.

One more thing to try,... could you try changing the name of the route that won't sync?

I also tried to duplicate a route (thinking I could get synching the “duplicated” - hence it should be treated as a “new” one). Steps executed:

- export to gps (on iPad)
- uploading the exported file thru the Web App
- however it did not create a new route directly (unfortunately)
- after modifying the name tags I could import it as new route

When I discover the synch issue again in the future I will try this as a workaround to get a “synching” copy.

You can also duplicate a route without import / export.

  • Select route from your route list
  • Tap the "duplicate" button below the map preview.

Funny I didn’t see that button using the iPad in horizontal mode - the duplicate and delete button were only visible after scrolling. Thanks.
