Speed cameras POI
Quote from Marko Lorenzo on 30.06.2020, 04:01I would love to see speed camera warnings and audio warnings where it's possible. I have found a blog with guys who daily update POI lists with stationary speed cameras in Croatia and Slovenia. I wish this could be added to our maps.

Quote from Guido on 30.06.2020, 05:33There is a way to imporrt custom POIs manually and add proximity warnings for them. Have a look at tutorial video, section ‘Custom POI Import’. https://scenic.app/knowledge-base/scenic-detailed-tutorial-video/
I’m also looking into possibilities to add speed camera support out of the box, but can’t say anything definite about it yet, and will be, if at all, for next motorcycle season.

Quote from Shapa on 16.07.2020, 09:49The only major feature I'm missing is the camera advance warnings.
I would recommend using the pocketgpsworld.com database as the most advanced and reliable - paid subscription but the fee is really small. Speed limits are also included in the database. In many countries (like the UK) it is 100% legal to use GPS cameras database and to warn in advance - the idea to reduce speed in a dangerous zone but not to punish people (at least in the UK), so camera warnings are "lifesavers".
I'm riding a very powerful bike (electric Energica Eva Ribelle) and this feature will be really helpful.

Quote from Schuitema on 08.06.2021, 10:58When using Scenic while navigating a Route on my Motorcycle, the most important deficiency I experience is that there is no active-map (on-the-fly) reporting such as what is seen in my personal favorite (non-motorcycle-specific) navigation app - WAZE.
In my neck of the woods here in Florida, the biggest threat to my enjoying a ride are Police who are intent at trying to dish out as many speeding tickets as possible. WAZE serves to act kind of like my personal radar detector and (often) successfully alerts me to Police presence.
I would be willing to sub$cribe to this sort of "advanced" feature in Scenic if it were made available to me. As it stands, I often switch over to WAZE while actively navigating a Route in Scenic. In this way the screen shows WAZE while Scenic continues to provide me with audible voice prompts to keep me on track. I wish I could have my cake and eat it too!
Beyond Police locations I also enjoy seeing speed-reduction live on WAZE - to help me avoid traffic.
Thanks for listening!

Quote from Guido on 08.06.2021, 12:05I'm an avid WAZE user myself in the car, so I fully understand the requests 🙂
Ultimately Scenic 3 will add traffic support, but not from the beginning.
Regarding the reporting function... there's two reasons why I can't / won't implement that at this point:
1. Having a real time reporting system like this requires a vast network of users worldwide that constantly use the app and report and update incidents (police, pot hole, accidents, etc.). Although Scenic is quite heavily used in the motorcycling community by no means can it compare to Waze. Another option would be to tap in such a report database of another app, but as far as I know there is no publicly available wordwide database of those real time reports.2. Safety reasons: in the car it's relatively easy to tap on the screen and report something etc), but on the motorcycle it's more difficult and it can have a lot bigger consequences should this go wrong.
Fixed safety camera's is a different topic. Currently you can load those as a Custom POI Group (see that section in the tutorial video) and in Scenic 3 there will be a built in feature for that in the future.
Hope this helps/explains. If not or if you have other questions please let me know. Happy to help.
Best regards and ride safe,

One thing that would be nice to improve - the POI name adjustable pronunciation. For example, the GPX POI data files I'm using (from the pocketgpsworld) - the POI name is
<name>30-pM-112821</name>
When the App is saying "30 pM oneonetwo..." - obviously, it's distracting 🙂
Ideally:
To be able to adjust how many letters to read, i.e. to add a setting "to ignore dash / read only first 4 letters", so it will be "30pM"I can share a sample GPX file (UK cameras, for example).
Additionally, it could be useful not to make any voice prompt but some alert signal (aka bell / warning sound / etc, could be uploaded by a user).

Quote from Guido on 11.06.2021, 17:28Hmmm… I’m not sure I feel comfortable in implementing such a feature. After all there are many sources that is being imported from, each with different formats and such. In this case I think a better solution would be to change the names before importing with some kind of powerful text editor.
Replacing the verbal announcement with a kind of beep is a better, more robust solution. I will add that to the list for Scenic 3. L

- Am I missing something or is the POI function still not working properly in version 3.10.? I can see POI’s on the map but need audible notification of upcoming speed cameras on my route and the ability to manage groups of POI’s just like we had in v2. For me (second only to navigation) this is the most important feature of the app and the reason I adopted it as my goto nav app. Based in the UK there so many cameras on the roads these days, for me it’s an essential (currently missing) feature.

Quote from Guido on 12.07.2022, 10:08I understand. Unfortunately the performance problems that Scenic is facing with large poi groups (= the reasons why I have not implemented audible alerts yet and also why I recommend not to use big >2000 POI groups), are caused by the HERE framework, not by Scenic code. So, I can't solve it myself. Well... the only way to solve this is to switch to HERE's new framework. I'm doing this after the summer. So, I'm afraid this will be something for next riding season. Sorry.

During fall/winter I'm migrating Scenic to the new HERE framework. This has built in speed cameras, which I will make available in Scenic. I don't know what the underlying data is for the speed cams in HERE. I suspect it's not as good as Blitzer for the mobile checks, but since Scenic is worldwide, I prefer to use the built in solution, in stead of integrating with many local sites like Blitzer. Hope you understand.

I’m migrating Scenic to the new HERE framework over winter, and will be adding the speed cam database while I’m at it. If all goes according to plan this should be ready by the time the motorcycle season starts in the UK.

Quote from Guido on 21.11.2022, 19:34Out of curiosity apart from speed cameras what does the new HERE map framework improve on over the current framework ?
The most important reason for the migration is that HERE is decommissioning their old framework. The new framework is built on a new modernized code base, and positions it for future additions.
For the moment I will be transferring all Scenic functionality 1-to-1. I will be adding speed cams and some more map customization options.
Later on I will expand more, but most important is to at least keep current functionality, but then running on the new framework

I'm in UK, so it should be legal.
Thanks. Which update is that? Is this being tested in beta and about to be released soon or? In UK, speed cameras are a big thing, part of every big navigation app, Google Maps have them, Waze, TomTom. I've read something that Detecht will soon release an update introducing speed cameras, but I would really prefer to stay with Scenic.

Quote from Sarus on 28.11.2023, 07:30Hi,
I'm new here, so sorry if I have not seen all/or missed some from this topic...
I would propose for germany (also seems to handle most of europa too) -> blitzer.de (also the name of the app)
this is the best app for warning from speed-cams with a tremendous big user-base, so you have also a good reliable source for mobile speed-cams (they compete with watze easily) ...
As I have seen that they are working with other companies (e.g. hardware like onoo) together, there should be an api for accessing their data
-> perhabs you could reach out to them, would be gift 😉

Not been on here for a while. This comment sparked my interest. Has the "big update" already occurred or still in the works? Thanks, Guido for this fantastic go-to app.

looks that the functionality is now implemented, which is great !
But even if I select all the speed camera options (planification, tracking, and Warning ) , it doesn’t show anything or any warning . I’m in France, premium user .
thanks

Quote from Guido on 11.03.2024, 08:19I just looked into this; it appears to be a bug AND a limitation.
It's a limitation because, in France, it's legally not allowed to show the exact location of speed cameras. So, the HERE framework that Scenic uses does not give the precise location, and thus can not show speed cameras on the map in France.
It's a bug because Scenic should warn you when you enter a "danger zone." Danger zones refer to areas with an increased risk of traffic incidents. Typically, danger zones indicate the presence of a speed camera.
I will fix this for the next update so that you get a warning when you enter such a danger zone, but unfortunately, you won't be able to see the exact location. Sorry.

Quote from mattik on 17.03.2024, 10:57Hello Guido,
you once said that you might be working on a workaround for Germany - to be able to display the safety cams.
I would be happy if this is available in Scenic.
Best Regards, Mathias

Quote from Sarus on 18.03.2024, 09:41thanks Guido for your efforts in this case.
Also to solve all such issues with not provided data from the navigation-maps-supplier, please try to reach out to the guys from Blitzer.de.
They should have an API for other 3rd parties and they are the uncontested instance for speed-cams in hole europe. To have an map-overlay from them would be a tremendous gift.

Hi Mathias,
There is a workaround. You can download the free app Flitsmeister (FM) and run it in the background. This app will give you actual information and voice messages will be streamed to your headset. Not only the fixed cameras but much more information like ambulances etc.
Just try it, Geert-Henk

Hello Geert-Henk,
thank you for your tip.
There are other apps that provide a workaround.
But it's important to me to have the notifications on the display - and that's only possible with Scenic.I look forward to Guido implementing a solution.
Best regards, Mathias
