Speed camera warnings
Quote from 7dage on 11.09.2024, 02:54Hi Guido, How does the speed warning work?
After several thousand kms of riding in Denmark, France, Belgium and Germany i have seen less than 5 speed camera warnings while my friends on the same trips have seen many, many more. Furthermore I see some users talk about a count down functionality. I have never seen that.
i am pretty sure my setup is correct. I am using an IPhone X
i was really looking forward to the speed warning functionality as speed cameras are popping up everywhere.

At the moment, speed cameras are not available in Germany, and in France you only get "danger zone" warning (approximate location where a speed camera might be). This is a limitation imposed by HERE maps (they don't include them due to legal reasons).
This is all going to change with Scenic 4, which is going to be released on October 1st. If you haven't seen it yet, here's the announcement: https://scenic.app/scenic-4-is-coming
Scenic 4 won't have speed cameras on October 1st, but it's the first thing I'll be re-adding... probably available in November. The good news is that this will also include speed cameras for Germany and Switzerland, which were missing due to the HERE limitation I mentioned.
Hope this helps/explains. If not, please let me know if you have other questions. Happy to help.
Best regards and ride safe,
Guido

The good news is that this will also include speed cameras for Germany and Switzerland,
I am not sure that this is good news. I am even afraid that it might turn out to be bad news, depending on your implementation approach.
HERE had a reason not to offer speed camera warnings for Germany and Switzerland: They are simply illegal in these countries. Especially the Swiss go far enough to seize and destroy any speed camera warning devices they find you with - next to fining you drastically. (The Swiss supreme court has explicitly confirmed that this includes not only active radar detectors but also devices/phones that match the current device position with a camera database.)
I am confident that you considered this before. So please tell me:
Will users have the choice to prevent Scenic from loading Swiss or German speed camera data onto their device?
And will there be a feature that will allow to plausibly deny the presence/prove the absence of German or Swiss speed camera data on the device towards police officers etc? (E.g. a list of countries for which the data is loaded?)Please don't get me wrong. I am not trying to tell anybody to load/use German or Swiss camera data or not. But my personal choice is to stay on the legal side. Will this be possible?
Thank you and best regards,
Martin
