Shortcuts while riding on planned roads

As I am planning every route on forehand, I am using the ‘short’-route type. It forces me to put extra via points, but at least I have everything under control on forehand.

But while riding, it looks like Scenic discovered that there is a shorter route than planned, sends me on some dangerous off-road, to rejoin the original road 200 meters further, probably because the road is 1 meter shorter than the planned road.

First of all, what does short means : short in time or short in distance.

Second, how much difference in distance (or time) should there be to change the planned road : something like ‘if I find a shorter route than planned of at least 500 meters shorter, propose. Otherwise ignore’.

Third, why didn’t Scenic show this detour while planning ? In one month (between planning and riding), there are not so many new off-road roads being build.
Fourth, there should be levels of off-road, so you can choose the difficulty level. As inspiration :

- Level 1 : light gravel

- Level 2 : potholes, small rocks and undeep sand

- Level 3 : big rocks, washed out roads, river crossing (max 20cm), up to 30% inclines, single track

- Level 4 : steep gliding rocks, deep sand

- Level 5 : on your own, or turn around.

I’m not sure where you expect that data to come from, I don’t know any mapping application that provides that.

The request seems totally unrealistic.

Point 4 is indeed wishful thinking, but points 1, 2 and 3 can be solved.

But while riding, it looks like Scenic discovered that there is a shorter route than planned

Did you hear the route recalculation sound / was a waypoint auto-skipped? (referring to your other forum topic)

distance

A route recalculation only takes place after you deviate from your route. The route recalculation is done with the same routing mode as the original route (short in your case).

I don’t know. Was this detour in there when you started navigating the route, or did it appear later after a recalculation?

there should be levels of off-road

That’s a difficult one. Some of this data is available in the maps (not to this level of detail though), but more importantly, the routing algorithm configuration options are limited and do not have these detailed option at this moment. This is out of my control.

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

how much deviation is required before a route recalculation is done ? I don’t remember I deviated from the planned route. I looks to me to be too sensible

It's 50 meters. Can you try switching off the "Extrapolate position" setting (Settings > Finetuning)? This can cause recalculations, especially in tight winding roads.

Extrapolate position was switched off during the whole month.

50 meters is not much. In Thailand, a lot of bridges are being rebuild and require to use a temporary ride around. Idem with roads being enlarged or straightened, which requires you to deviate probably more than 50 meters.

i think recalculation shouldn’t start under 200 meters. Or perhaps as option in fine tuning.

Increasing this distance is not the answer. With 200 meters, in an urban environment, you can be 3 blocks away from the route before Scenic realizes you took a wrong turn and give you a new route. That’s unacceptable.

In the situation you are describing in Thailand, I’d recommend turning off auto-skip via points, (or at least increase the number of recalculations to auto-skip). I live in Mexico and we have situations like this as well. I have auto-skip turned off.

Excellent advise. Thanks. I will surely try on next trip.
