Scenic without data plan
Quote from dcumpian on 15.02.2024, 06:54Hi,
I have an old iPhone XR that I want to use Scenic with as my permanent GPS. Will Scenic work without a sim card in the phone? I am assuming with downloaded offline maps and routes made while connected to Wi-Fi, the answer is "Yes", but I wanted to get a definitive answer before I go down this road...

Quote from Guido on 15.02.2024, 11:35Yes it will work without SIM card. Just make sure you download the offline maps you need while on WiFi.
A few things will not work if you don't have a connection:
- Curvy route generation and Round trip generation. To get around that, create those routes while on Wifi, through the power planner, and then save them. Once they are saved, you don't need a connection anymore to navigate them.
- Search will only search the offline maps. So, no Apple search results, no HERE online search results and no Google search results when you are offline.
Cheers,
Guido

Second option.
My main phone is iPhone 11. I leave it in my bag. On the bike i use an iPhone 7 without SIM.
Just make a personal hotspot in case you need connection.

GuidoIf you're working with offline maps and no connection, the search function's usefulness really suffers, in my opinion. It will only search the offline maps, as Guido says... that's expected, but that search will only return results within a radius of - what is it Guido, 15 km? - your current location. So if you're looking for any locations further away than that, you'll get no results...

GuidoI generally create the next day's route in my hotel room the night before, so that shouldn't be a problem. And I would have another phone with me with an actual data plan. The reason for wanting to do this is my XR is getting old, and the camera broke on an unexpected 20 mile washboard gravel road up in Wisconsin last summer, lol. So I want to replace the phone, but keep using the XR on the bike. The new phone will stay in my jacket pocket.
