Scenic v3 and new BMW ConnectedRide Cradle

Hi Guido and Scenic Users,

BMW introduced the new ConnectedRide Cradle, which will be mounted directly to the Navigator VI mount.

Wonder if this will work also with Scenic App, as the cradle connects to the bike by Bluetooth 4.2 and provides the wonder wheel functionality to a connected smart phone. (Mainly designed to be used with the BMW Connected App)

Would be really nice, if this new BMW gadget could be also integrated into Scenic like the WunderLINQ feature.

Looking forward, hearing from you

Thanks, Heiko

Hello Heiko,

I suspect BMW is using a proprietary bluetooth communication protocol. I have not seen any specs about it yet, but hope they will document this for other app developers as well. For now, it’s just BMW’s own connected app I'm afraid.

If any of you know or heard of documentation around the Bluetooth protocol BMW is using, or somehow who reversed engineered it, please let me know. With that documentation, it would be really easy to implement in Scenic as I already have the UI interface for the WunderLINQ.

Cheers,
Guido

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Hello Guido,

Thanks for your quick reply.

Let's see, if BMW opens the protocol or one of scenic users are able to provide you with such information.

Would be really great to get this implemented.

Heiko

Hi Guys,

I've had the BMW ConnectedRide Cradle for about 2 weeks now. The app itself is okay, but in combination with the WonderWheel certainly does not offer the same functionalities that the BMV Nav VI does. I am now seriously trying to see whether navigation via the smartphone (iPhone 11) is/can be a good replacement for the Nav VI. So far satisfied with Scenic. The advantage of the Cradle is wireless charging when using Scenic. In the meantime a piece of tube has been installed with a stylus pen, so that operation of the Scenic app with gloves on is also possible.

I hope BMW makes it possible to use the WonderWheel with other apps than just ConnectedRide. That would really be a huge leap forward in service that you can expect from a BMW Motorrad.

Kind regards, Vincent (Prospect on Scenic)

As soon as anybody hears about BMW making this possible, could you please post here? I’m keeping an eye on it too of course, but many will see and hear more than one 👍 Thanks everyone!

I bought a new GS in 2019 largely driven by the wonderful TFT and BMW Connected App. For me it's been an utter disappointement (the app), it disconnects and I get constant audio breakup. They did upgrade the TFT firmware on my bike in 2020 which helped dramatically but it's still (at best) poor. I've given up with the BMW Connected app and have gone back to pairing the phone with Packtalk. Means I can use the CArdo App. I did try the BMW Connected Nav, it was fine for  A to B travel but Scenic is much better. I know this doesn't help around your question with the Whizzy Wheel but my advice is not to bother with the Cradle as I can't see BMW opening it up.

I finally found a forum that has the same interest as me. I have the bmw cradle too and would be nice to use other apps with it.

I found someone that kind of reversed engineered the bmw connect drive im assuming it would be the same concept

I don’t believe this is the same, or at the least it’s much more than what I’m looking for.

  • What I’m looking for as developer of Scenic is how I can ‘catch’ the wheel inputs so that users can operate basic functions in Scenic with the wheel…. without touching the screen. Similar as to how Scenic works with the WunderLINQ. https://scenic.app/help/wunderlinq-integration/

Showing a Scenic UI on the BMW TFT display is another step that goes much further than what I’m looking for at this point in time. It has many parallels with the Bosch MySpin discussion going on here: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/bosch-my-spin-and-scenic/ and follows a similar reasoning as to why I don’t want to spend too much effort on this am for the moment.
