Scenic to Garmin XT2

Ok, imported scenic route to XT2 but when I choose the route it shows as “Garmin Route Point Extension”.

When I choose the route I get “The vehicle profile used to create this route cannot be used with this device.  Recalculate the route to work with this device?”

Choosing No gets me nowhere, choosing Yes changes the route and puts me on highway roads versus the scenic routing.

Any ideas on what I’m doing wrong?

I've had similar compatibility issues importing GPX files into my Garmin XT using the iPhone Garmin apps. It seems to be totally random too. Whether they're exported from Google or websites such as My Route App, some will import, some won't.

Or if they do, some work, others try to take me off the beaten path, so to speak and the Garmin refuses to recalculate the route. This is why I've abandoned the Garmin Platform, bought a Chigee AIO-5 Lite and and now running Scenic via CarPlay.

Sorry that I can't help with your problem, just highlighting why I've dumped Garmin.

I’m very new to Scenic and GPS gadgets in general. But, FWIW - I’m using an app called “Garmin Drive”, on my iPad to move the Scenic files to my Zumo.

I export the GPX file from Scenic to Garmin Drive. Garmin Drive does some voodoo, then it will export the files to your Zumo XT via Bluetooth. They show up in Trip Planner on the Zumo. Garmin Drive sends 3 file types, I don’t know why 3 types, but I usually delete 2 of the 3, usually keeping the one with the description “Garmin Route File”. So far, so good for me. I do have a 4 day ride later this week, that will be my 1st legit test with this method.

I’m done with my trip, and I have a couple of realizations. What I’ll write out below is how I am using my iPad with Scenic to Garmin Drive to my Garmin Zumo XT2 to make a road specific route.

So let’s say you have your Scenic route completed. You’re taking this road, that road, no interstate from A to B, etc. (For this example, I’ll use my last days ride. Scenic says it’s 342 miles.) OK, name it, save it.

Next, have Garmin Drive open. Next, have your Zumo XT2 powered up, confirm Garmin Drive sees via Bluetooth the Zumo.

Go back to your Scenic route, export it to Garmin Drive where it does its thing. Then Garmin Drive asks if you want to send the route to your Zumo, tap Yes, and it transfers. The Zumo will say “saving item 1 of 3” then 2 of 3, then 3 of 3 to Trip Planner. Then “New tracks were received to Tracks”. And “New trips were received and added to Trip Planner”. And “New Locations…” etc.

Now, to the Zumo. On the Home screen go to Apps. Take a look at Tracks, there will be a file there with the name. I look at it, but usually sort of ignore it. Go back a screen, tap on Trip Planner. Tap on Saved Trips.

Here I have 3 files. All have the same name, each with a different suffix. One suffix reads “plain GPX” then “Garmin RoutePoint Extension” then “Garmin Trip Extension”

Note: I’m going to make another forum post so I don’t loose what I’ve typed.

Continuing from above.

Opening the plain GPX file the mileage reads 345 miles. In the route listing it has the start and end points, and each via point. Note that Scenic calculated this as 342 miles, ok, pretty close. Opening the RoutePoint file, this one says 370 miles…hmm. And it only has the start and end points listed, OK. Opening the Trip Extension file, it calculates it as 345 miles. It lists the same via points too, different icons from the plain GPX file icons for the via points, but at least they agree on distance, i.e. plain GPX and Trip Extension files.

On this trip I went thru this comparison on 3-4 days routes. I had specific roads I wanted to ride each day. I would scrutinize each days Scenic map I generated to the Garmin Zumo generated map from the GPX export, zooming in to see each road, turn, path thru a city, etc. Tedious, yes, but I wanted to understand what’s going on.

So my 1st light bulb moment is this: when the GPX file goes to the Garmin Drive, then to the Zumo - the Zumo will calculate what it thinks is the best path between those via points it receives from the GPX. This may agree with Scenic, maybe not. It might make its choices by time, or distance, etc. I saw this from looking how Scenic routed thru “city A” compared to how the Zumo routed thru “city A”. They each took slightly different paths.

To test this, I edited the Scenic route, added more via points thru city A, resaved it, re-exported it to Garmin Drive then to the Zumo. This step then forced the Zumo to follow the Scenic path. Ah, ok - I see now how I can make the Zumo route match the Scenic route. This technique can be done on any route, to get the Garmin route to agree with the Scenic route, and you can get the mileage to match up pretty well.

This idea was reinforced by looking at the map of the RoutePoint file I mentioned above. Remember it had a different mileage, 370 vs 345, and only showed the start and ending. Looking at the map, this file routed me on an interstate I didn’t want to go on. It was a shorter distance, but I was intentionally staying off those when I could.

Anyway, this is my learning curve, hopefully someone else will find it useful.

Thanks for the explanation. I use a similar tool chain to navigate:

1. Planning route in Scenic (iPad/iPhone)

2.  „GPX Export“ using Scenic App

3. choosing Garin Drive App as target

4. sending GPX file to Zumo XT via Bluetooth

5. Result: several new files in Zumo XT
- 1 track
- 3 routes „xxx (Garmin Trip Extension), xxx (plain GPX), xxx (Garmin RoutePoint Extension)

Which one of the three routes am I supposed to use, if I just want to ride the route as planned?
Version (Garmin RoutePoint Extension) does seem to loose all the Vias, so is this just start to finish?

What is the difference between „plain GPX“ and „Garmin Trip Extension“?

Greetings

Helge

I assume this is a feature of the XT2 (import GPX via Drive). I can't make this work in the Garmin XT device.

@mdh001, I use a ZumoXT and can import a GPX file via the Garmin Drive app, all on my iPad. I’ll try to post some pictures to illustrate.
