Scenic app experience using CarPlay on Chigee

Just came back to the UK after 8 day epic adventure in the French Pyrenees.  This was my first full experience using the Scenic app after using Calimoto on previous trips.  Although I did have Calimoto loaded with the same routes as a backup, I’m happy to say that I didn’t use that once, and solely used Scenic app, which performed excellently throughout the adventure.  I did however note a few things that would’ve made the experience using Scenic on CarPlay even better:

  1. A number of local roads in France were closed due to resurfacing, something that you don’t know until you get there.  As there is no road block feature in CarPlay version, which I understand is a limitation of what you can do in CarPlay.  It was a bit annoying that I had to switch the bike off to access the phone app to mark the roadblock, and then switch the bike back on, for CarPlay to restart.  It would be great if the phone app could stay alive whilst in CarPlay mode.  Not to display as a mirror as such of the navigation, but a simpler / cut down view to access the options, that way you can make the adjustments using the full phone app functionality and leave CarPlay as the simpler interface.  I think this “dual” screen was mentioned in another thread, and personally I think it would be a great addition.
  2. Due to the road closures, sometimes the re-routing had me backtrack the way I came, not a problem, but it’s quite difficult to distinguish between the route already travelled and the new re-routed view as the colour scheme is very similar, just shades darker.  It would be great if the route already travelled is in a completely different colour to the purple navigation route.
  3. I know through the settings screen on the phone app you can switch between Destination and Next Stop in the “Show Distance and Time To” option.  However this feature is not on CarPlay and being able to easily switch between the two would be good.  Even better would be to show both on CarPlay at the same time, with Next Stop details above the Destination details in the same bottom left box.  This way I can see how long to go for my next break, and how long to my final destination.
  4. Nice to haves:
    1. Ability to add stopping durations to waypoints, therefore the overall riding time is reflected more accurately.  If I have three waypoints as breaks, I would love to put in 30min duration for each, and then the overall time to destination could add 1.5 hrs to the time.
    2. Larger POI icons on the map view to easily see, even better would be the ability to click on it and add to navigation (thinking fuel stops detour) - I understand this maybe a limitation on CarPlay interface though.
    3. More detail on the map while navigating.  When planning a route, you can see details of road, buildings, parks, rivers, etc.., but when you navigate, a lot of this detail is not visible.
    4. A niche feature, and maybe not for everyone, but the ability to pause navigation in CarPlay

Overall the scenic app performed flawlessly and I used it throughout the adventure and was 100% reliable, so much confidence in the app that Calimoto has been deleted, and will be only using Scenic - keep up the great work.

With regards to number 3, I have mine set to “Alternate”. The means every few seconds the “time and distance to” field alternates between the next stop and the final destination.

Oh how silly of me, I didn’t even notice that setting - thanks for the tip!

Hi @grapii,

Thanks for your feedback. I've placed inline comments below.
Let me know if you have any questions or comments after that.

Best regards,
Guido

It would be great if the phone app could stay alive whilst in CarPlay mode.  Not to display as a mirror as such of the navigation, but a simpler / cut down view to access the options

I'm working on a redesign for fall of this year, and I'm planning to do just that. Add some functionality to the iPhone screen that is difficult or impossible to implement on CarPlay itself, including blocked roads.

It would be great if the route already travelled is in a completely different colour to the purple navigation route.

The route travelled should actually be gray, while the route still to go should be magenta. If the route overlaps itself, then indeed the gray will drawn below the magenta so you can't really see where you already were. I'll see if I can make this more visible during the redesign as well.

Show time/destination to next stop and destination

CarPlay is limited in that too. You can only display one ETA. This is because you are abligated to use an Apple template. I could display the 'other' eta somewhere else on the screen, but it would look different. I'll give this some thought during the redesign too. For now.... ... what Dae said 🙂.

Ability to add stopping durations to waypoints

I'll add this to the list for the redesign.

Larger POI icons

You can increase the POI icon size by creating a custom map style (3rd button from top left on the iPhone start/main screen). Taps on the carplay screen, other than on the pre-defined CarPlay template buttons, are not recognized, so that's not possible on CarPlay.

More detail on the map while navigating

This depends on your zoom level. You could try switching to manual zoom, or speed based zoom and configure the speed based zoom to your liking: https://scenic.app/help/speed-based-and-turn-based-zoom/ I'm also planning to improve this during the redesign.

pause navigation in CarPlay

Can I ask why? The navigation already auto-pauses when not moving for more than 2 minutes, and auto-resumes when more than 100 meters away from the pause location.

Thanks again and best regards,
Guido

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Thanks @guidomm

I think I'm confusing with the other option which is to display original route, which I think is in a slightly darker shade of magenta?

Oh yes... it's slighty darker, and it's thinner too. Maybe the difference is thickness is not big enough? I like to keep it the same tint, as to not confuse it with your track/breadcrumb color, and the gray. Too many colors can also become confusing.

Hi @grapii!

That sounds like a nice trip. I see your scenic map is displaying in light mode on your carplay unit. Mine is constantly in dark mode and is very difficult to see in bright sun. How did you manage to achieve this?

Thanks in advance!

Scenic takes over the CarPlay appearance setting. There should be a setting somewhere in your CarPlay system (not in iOS settings), to set appearance (dark/light/auto).

Hi @aging-bull

whilst connected to CarPlay, go to the CarPlay settings, there should be an option for always display maps in dark mode. Toggle this off and you should be set

Thanks @grapii and @guidomm,

So as far as I understand, in the carplay appearance settings I have the choice between always dark and automatic. If automatic is selected, it takes a signal from the car (either ambient light sensors, or headlight status) and uses that to trigger dark/light mode. However, with these moto carplay units, there is no such signal. In some of them, you can toggle day/night in the UI but I don't seem to have that option. Hmmmm it's a bit of a pity.

I’m also using scenic with CarPlay. Can you make it possible to plan curvy routes as well through the UI? I’m on a trip without nav last Sunday and after an hour, I would like a curvy route back to home. But can’t do that through CarPlay. Only fast and short. Can you extend that to all options? Now need to disconnect the phone and do it there.

Working on a big update for the fall and will see if I can add this.

that’s great Guido, thanx

Just adding to this conversation for further discussion and consideration. I've noticed that custom map themes don't appear to translate through to the CarPlay device (Chigee AIO-5). The daytime CarPlay map also doesn't seem to have a lot of contrast. The side roads are hard to distinguish from the background.

Is it also possible to make the tracking arrow something that has more contrast? The light blue against the light background is also hard to read. Some of the other apps like Rever seem to have higher contrast colors.

Not sure if this is a CarPlay issue and maybe it will be in the fall update, but wanted to point that out.

Thanks.

For now, to use custom maps on CarPlay, you have to make it the default map for light / dark mode. To do that, go to custom maps (2nd button top right in main screen on iPad) and then tap on the map you want to make default and select so in the popup menu that appears.

further improvement is coming in October.
