Scenic 4 Announcement
Quote from AstridM on 10.09.2024, 02:41I just saw the announcement that Scenic 4 is scheduled for October 1st. While I understand the reason to change the map provider, I have two questions concerning the migration from V3 to V4:
- The pop up window which appears after starting Scenic announces that Scenic 4 is coming. On the bottom of that window it is stated: "This version will stop working on October 1st!" Is it really true that V3 will stop working on October 1st? I will be in the middle of a 3 weeks trip and I have no guarantee that I can update Scenic on that date.
- Is my assumption correct that my "Premium Forever" status remains valid for V4 as well?
Best regards
Astrid

You'll probably be able to use Scenic in offline mode still after October 1st, but I can't guarantee that everything will continue working, especially online routing, as the contract with the current map provider ends on October 1st.
Premium forever, and all subscriptions will stay the same.
Best regards,
Guido

Quote from Dae on 10.09.2024, 10:16Do you know yet how those of us with big collections of routes will fair with regards to being unexpected changes?
I’m assuming that the new provider may recalculate our routes differently from HERE, and this lead to some unexpected detours for those of us with route collections too big to manually check each one.

Quote from Guido on 10.09.2024, 11:00Yes... this can happen, but I can't really answer this. It will depend on the route, the number of via points in the route, and how important it is to you to follow the route exactly as it was planned. What I recommend is to check your route before going out on a ride with a specific route. I wouldn't recommend going through all your routes beforehand. You can if you want to, of course, but why not spread it out until you are actually going to ride a route again?

Interestingly, my small screen (iPhone SE) doesn't fit all that text: it says, "This version will stop working on..." and leaves me hanging. Scrolling up reveals the date, but only as long as I hold my finger on the screen. So I'm glad you posted this, @AstridM!
I basically only use Scenic in offline mode anyway, and I have no rides planned around October 1st, so I think I'll give the dust some time to settle before I update...

Quote from Dae on 10.09.2024, 11:02Will you still have the feature where you import a GPX and can see the original and Scenic version so you can fix any discrepancies? This is an invaluable feature and makes spotting where routes calculate differently very easy.

Quote from DPE_UK on 10.09.2024, 15:17Like some others, I will be on a long trip across Europe using Scenic in the 1st Oct. I use scenic across multiple devices, if I keep my on bike device on the current version off line, but use version 4 on my iPad for planning, will I be able to synch planned routes between the devices?
I will of course upgrade to the latest versions once the trip has ended.

Quote from Guido on 10.09.2024, 16:05I am not 100% sure you will be able to use Scenic 3 after October 1st. While using offline I don’t expect any problems as the HERE servers can’t be contacted, but I cant try this beforehand.
In any case, make sure to update Scenic to v3.66 before your trip (already available). And then turn off automatic updates (otherwise it will automatically update to v4 on October 1st).
I don’t recommend planning with v3 and riding with v4. The routes will sync, but the roads between waypoints might be chosen differently between the versions.

Quote from Sanfish on 11.09.2024, 17:22Been a lifetime member for a while and have 162 VERY detailed (private) routes I manually created...when HERE came in, it screwed up my routing on most of them and over a period of 6 months I finally got the routes corrected. The routes have many "Via's" and "Stops" because how complex and twisty the routes are (all paved). All maps require offline maps (for 4 US states) because there is no cell coverage in these mountains.
Now I am beyond concerned this will happen again. To make matters worse, we are heading to mountains for 8 days (starting Oct 5th) and I am the guy with all the routes everyone else follows. FML.
I love the product but now concerned I reply on it too much because of these changes and how they effect my large "routes" collection.
(Not a question, just venting)

Quote from Guido on 11.09.2024, 18:25I fully understand your point. I wish it was different. I wish I did not have to switch to another provider again as migrating the app to a new provider is a huge amount of work in itself. However, due to the reasons mentioned in the Scenic 4 announcement blog article, I feel this is the right choice in the long run.
@sanfish... since you are going on a trip Oct 5th... if you like, I can add you as a beta tester so you'll get a bit earlier access... giving you more time to at least check the routes you will be using on this trip. If you'd like that, please send me an email through the email button at the bottom of the support page, and mention your Apple ID email.

I've just read the blog - first that I've seen of it (my bad, should pay more attention). This post is more about HERE than of Scenic as it has piqued my curiosity.
HERE currently provides maps for the Garmin Zumo range of navs. Is it still going to provide this service to Garmin?
Which other apps use HERE? It'd be interesting to read the back story on HERE and why it is shifting focus like this.
What does Tom Tom use these days? Here in Australia it used to use Sensis data, which, I think, was Australian sourced via Whereis. Can't remember full details now as it's been more than 10 years since I've owned a Tom Tom.

The forums are full of users, myself included, with issues such as route calculation discrepancies, wrong icons/instructions for roundabouts and junctions etc that are all HERE related. The biggest one though, by far, is battery/power consumption - many people can’t get through more than a couple of hours of navigating without the phone battery being depleted. HERE have admitted it is an issue with their code, but still haven’t fixed it. It has been over a year.
I fully understand Guido’s reason for change, and think it’s a really good idea. My wife and I also have extensive route collections which are all done using HERE and will need checking, but we think the long term reliability is worth the short term pain.

As for battery issues I can't comment. My iPhone is always connected to a charger, whether it be USB cable or the Quadlock wireless one on the bike. I've got plenty of time to test it though, before we get the update. That one has me curious.

Quote from Dae on 11.09.2024, 23:16The MRA battery issue, caused by HERE, is weird. Not everyone is affected and not all by the same amount. Many of us found that even a Quadlock wireless charger couldn’t keep the phone charged enough to last for a day’s ride. A wired charger was just about enough. Some people were/are totally unaffected.
I did have a similar issue with Scenic - it couldn’t last all day even on Quadlock. When Guido brought in the battery saver screen it helped, but me and my wife ultimately changed to using CarPlay as it also solved the issue of the phone screen in bright sunlight not being very visible, even worse in hot bright sun as the phone would dim the screen to reduce its temperature.
I’m looking forward to seeing the improvements that OSM maps make once CarPlay is available and I can use it. The customised colour schemes will be important though as I like to have high contrast colours to help visibility.

Maybe it's the CarPlay thing, then. It's all I use and I've used the iPhone all day with Scenic running. 2 weeks ago I was on a 7 day ride and using the Chigee unit/iPhone and Scenic each day and it was running from the start of the ride til the finish each day. Battery was always at 100%.

Quote from Dae on 11.09.2024, 23:34Definitely not an issue with CarPlay (for Scenic). My wife and I are currently touring the Ardenne (France/Belgium) and even 250 mile days see us back at the hotel with 30-40% battery. That’s with no charging on the bike and both of us listen to music on our bikes.

Quote from GB on 12.09.2024, 13:30I have the hard wired quadlock wireless charger, not the usb version. This keeps my 15 pro max charged no problem at all. With the current scenic version allowing you to export your gpx files why don’t those with lots of routes export them then import them into the new version when needed?

Question: After the switch to Scenic 4, what will be the best method to check old saved routes for accuracy?
The only method that I can think of is converting routes to GPX files prior to the conversion and than, after the conversion on 10/1, opening those GPX files in Scenic and adding via points to the route to “snap ” the route to the blue track line where there are discrepancies. Obviously this method requires a lot of work going through all the route files prior to conversion that I may want to use going forward and converting them to GPX files. Hoping you have a better method.
You may want to add this as a FAQ for Scenic 4 as I would imagine others will have the same question.

Another method would be to create screenshots and then check if the route is still the same.
It also depends on the kind of route. Perhaps for some routes it might not matter to you what roads are taken between the waypoints, as long as you hit all waypoints. If that's the case, you don't need to check. Waypoints are not changed between Scenic 3 and 4.

The import process is the same. Scenic will try to create a navigable route from it. If it can't or you can't get it to match, you can 'save blue line as track'. The new maps do have more dirt roads on them, so matching should be better for TET and TAT routes.

Yes, compared to something like osmand it’s awful to read but the interface and how it works with WunderLINQ makes scenic my favourite app.

If the v3 continue to work with downloaded HERE maps, I will be able to easily compare the route drawn by v4 on my current iPhone with the "original" routes planned and drawn in v3, and adjust the v4 route if needed 🙂

Scenic 4 is an update through the App Store as any regular update. Your data (routes, rides, locations, poi groups, vehicles) will be available in Scenic 4 too. I do recommend checking your route before you go out on a ride, as the new routing engine might calculate different roads between waypoints.
Your old offline maps will automatically be deleted when Scenic 4 starts up for the first time. You will need to download new versions of your offline maps.

Android is in development. To avoid setting expectations and causing disappointment, I'm not giving out dates anymore. Sorry.

Does that mean, that routes are not calculated with kurviger.de anymore?

I decided for scenic because of Kurviger routing. Gone for good as well or will it be on board on tuesday?
Please don‘t go Android with your what I believe to have read limited ressources for coding.

Quote from Dae on 29.09.2024, 02:32I must admit that whilst I fully understand the reasons and think the change will be better in the long run, I’m now faced with having to find a new app for October due to the lack of CarPlay.
My wife and I both use Scenic exclusively on CarPlay and have no phone mounts. The original announcement about v4 said CarPlay would be there at release on 1st October, so I wasn’t worried. Now I just noticed, thanks to your post, that it’ll be November
The 3D is also an issue, not for me but for my wife, as she hates 2D maps.

I’m fully aware that some of you will be affected by this, and I’m sorry about it. The only thing I can do is work as hard as I can to get Scenic 4 at par

Only curvy routes were calculated with Kurviger. This will stay and will be available in Scenic 4 on Tuesday.

That’s fine with me. If before it’s updated when I go riding, I’ll use Google Maps with the Chigee.
