Saving recorded ride fail
Quote from mattsz on 14.09.2025, 06:01Hi Guido, and all...
I recorded an all-day ride with a visiting friend yesterday. At the ride's end, I pulled into my garage, at which point I was in a hurry to move my car out of the garage to make room to park my friend's bike inside. Hurrying is often the main ingredient in the recipe for disaster... although "disaster" is probably too strong a word in this case, somehow my recorded ride didn't get saved. I stopped recording in the usual fashion - and I honestly can't remember if I was given an option for saving the ride. As I recall, there's usually a choice to save or delete the recorded ride... but the screen I was presented with didn't seem quite right to me, and I wasn't sure what to do... so I didn't do anything. I simply left it alone and moved my car. When I returned to the iphone on my bike, I was presented with the "home" screen showing the map and the "Ride / Search / Plan" buttons at the bottom... no evidence that I had recorded a ride at all, and no ride saved anywhere I can find.
Troubleshooting is frustrating; I'm not riding or driving today, so I cannot record and try to save a new ride because Scenic won't save a ride that's shorter than 0.3 miles. So I haven't been able to try to duplicate the steps to see where I might have gone wrong. I'm a little bit concerned that it appears that after recording a ride, with no user input after stopping the recording, Scenic's default action seems to be to "cancel" the recorded ride without saving.
What am I missing here?
Also - is there someplace that the recorded ride data might still be accessible? I use a navigation-dedicated iphone on the bike, and it's completely offline while in use there, so no wifi or cellular data transfer is possible - as such I doubt that there's any ride data on your server...

Quote from Guido on 14.09.2025, 07:27It’s hard to tell what exactly happened. If you stop a ride in the normal fashion… I assume you mean this entails using the ‘stop’ button at the top right on CarPlay. After that you get a choice do you want to save or discard the ride (or cancel.. meaning ride tracking will continue). This has not changed and there is no default choice in this screen.
I guess it’s possible that the ride was lost due to disconnecting from CarPlay, but even then, Scenic will not throw away the log file. If you close Scenic and reopen it will look for the log file and if it’s there, will ask you what you want to do (save ride, resume ride, discard ride). If it did not ask you that it means the ride (the log file) was already saved or discarded.

No car play. The phone is mounted on the handlebars. I've never lost a ride before, so I'm leaning towards operator error... but I can't think of what it might have been, since all I did was tap the red "recording" symbol on the bottom left, then the red (I think) "Stop ride" button on the next screen. After that, the screen that came up didn't look quite right to me; it didn't seem immediately obvious what I should do next... but I didn't feel like I had time to sort it out in the moment, so I took what I thought was the safe option and did nothing, thinking it would just wait for me to come back (only a minute later) and respond, or at worst go back to a previous screen or even the recording map. But none of the above...
I didn't close scenic either, I just left it as it was. I don't suppose there's any way for me, as an end user, to investigate the existence of a log file, is there?

Quote from HighPeakRider on 14.09.2025, 10:23Would be better if we had an autosave function, its easier to delete something you don't want rather to loose a whole ride, its very easy to do using CarPlay if you turn off the bike without thinking.....

Quote from Guido on 14.09.2025, 10:41The ride does not disappear when you turn off CarPlay. There is an auto-save in a sense. The only way you can delete a log file is when you choose “discard”. When you turn off CarPlay the ride continues on iPhone. If you close Scenic completely while a ride is ongoing, Scenic will detect the log file when you restart, and ask you what you want to do (continue ride, discard, or save it).

Quote from mattsz on 14.09.2025, 13:16All I know at this point is that I lost a recorded ride after it was finished, which I was actively trying to save at the time... and I have no idea what happened. Maybe there's room for user interface improvement... and maybe not. I have to run errands later today, I'll create a route and try to follow it and record my trip to see if I can somehow duplicate the steps... maybe that will shed some light...

Quote from mattsz on 15.09.2025, 04:42For completeness, here's some followup after testing. I'm going to go through my motions here; I guess most everyone already knows all of this... heck, I've saved dozens of rides without a problem in the past, and I currently have 52 saved.
I created a short loop then navigated and recorded that route (in my car, but using my phone, just like on the bike - no carplay). The way the route was set up, the finish point was a little bit before my home, so as I recall, I actually got a notification saying I had reached the end of my route, and did I want to keep recording (does this sound right?). I think I chose yes... anyway, when I parked the ride was still being recorded. I paused the recording and went inside to investigate.
I’ll point out that during each of the following steps, I paused and waited quite awhile between button taps to see if the process would time out and some default action would occur - it did not. Scenic waited patiently for me to respond in some way every time.
I tapped the record button (now not the red concentric “record” circle, but a grey "pause" symbol), and in the next screen, three buttons came up: "Resume Ride Tracking" (black), "Stop Ride" (red), and "Close" (black). Resume ride tracking brought me back to the previous screen, as expected. Tapping "Stop Ride" brought up the "Save Ride" window, with two buttons available: "Discard Ride" (white with red text", and "Save Ride" (black). These buttons are somewhat close together on my small iphone screen - not enough to be a problem for my bare fingers, but potentially close enough together that the larger pads on my touchscreen-enabled gloves could tap the wrong button if I’m not careful, like when riding (which I would never have a need to do)… or, perhaps, when hurrying after arrival at my destination.
I chose “Save Ride,” and was brought back to the home map screen - a small message splashed on the screen, “Ride Saved Successfully,” for about 2 seconds, then disappeared on its own. From there, no evidence that I had recently recorded or saved a ride. This is what I was trying to accomplish after my big ride, but I don’t remember seeing this message. I suppose his checks out, since the big ride wasn’t saved.
That was the end of my test, since I’m now back at the home map screen with no recorded ride to experiment with… but not quite the end of the story: I went looking for the “successfully saved” test ride, and at first I couldn’t find it. As it turns out, it wasn’t saved to the “Favorites” folder, which is where I expected to find it since I wasn’t asked for a destination folder while saving. In fact, it was saved to another folder I created and was using over the last couple of days. Does Scenic always default to the most recently used folder? I couldn’t find any settings relating to this.
I had high hopes that my big ride somehow ended up in another folder, so I checked them all - again (I had already searched all my folders). Nothing.I plan to take a new test ride today and this time try tapping the “Discard Ride” button on the “Save Ride” screen to see what happens. I assume I’ll be offered some sort of “are you sure?” button, which most definitely did not happen when my big ride ended - I just didn’t make that many screen-taps. One, maybe two, before I realized I had better come back to it instead, rather than make a mistake… and lose the recorded ride (add ironic tone here)...

Quote from Guido on 15.09.2025, 07:32This all sounds about right (the way it should work). Please let me know if you find a glitch in this during your next ride.
Regarding the folder the ride is saved in… indeed Scenic, by default, saves to the folder the most recent ride was saved to. You can change this in the “save ride” screen though.

I recorded another short test ride - this time, in the "Save Ride" window, I tapped "Discard Ride," and I was indeed asked for confirmation - which I definitely never saw when I lost the "big" ride. If I had, I most certainly wouldn't have confirmed it, since I wanted to save it.
I recorded another, proper ride yesterday, and Scenic behaved as expected during the save ride steps (I had some other navigation glitches, but nothing to do with the save function, so I'll address them elsewhere). After tapping the "Save Ride" button, the small window appeared, but this time showing a "spinning asterisk" activity indicator (does that thing have a name?), for almost 10 seconds before the “Ride Saved Successfully” text appeared. I was a bit concerned about that, since there was no such delay when saving my test rides, but I imagine that it's normal, since my test rides were very short (just a couple of miles), while my "big" rides were much longer (yesterday's being almost 200 miles), with lots of data to be processed.
I'll conclude this thread by saying I don't know what happened with my original lost ride, and since there are basically no other complaints about this issue, I suppose I'll have to attribute it to a one-time glitch, or some user error which I'll likely never discover...
