Routing, Scooter vs Motorcycle
Quote from Zoomer on 28.06.2025, 14:05Here is a curious thing. I planed a route on a journey that I know well, so the planning was just for fun. Vancouver on the mainland to Sidney on Vancouver Island. The curious thing is how the route changes between Motorcycle and Scooter settings. The route from Vancouver to the ferry, in Delta is the same in both cases, as it should be; highway and no avoiding that. But then the Scooter setting takes you way up Vancouver island, and back south to Sidney on a long series of side roads. Lovely to be sure but slow, and long.
This quite funny and odd as it is a much more arduous journey on the scooter setting and has more actual highway driving than the Motorcycle route suggestion.
I checked all the settings for ferries and highways, etc. There are no added stops or Via points, just a start and finish point entered into Scenic using 'Plan' on the main screen. And for the Scooter trip I adjusted the speed to 110 kph, as it is a 300 cc scooter. The only change that gives the 'correct' and obvious route comes from the motorcycle setting. (car or motorhome too, I assume). I've redone this several times, checking everything I can, with no change in the calculated route.
This is not a serious issue for me, where I know this route very well. But for a visitor, this could be very confusing and direct someone to a unnecessary route that is long and actually more hazardous and difficult on a scooter.
I suspect this is a map provider issue, but I wanted to share it here.
Thanks,
Damon

Quote from Guido on 28.06.2025, 14:15I think this is a map data issue. I remember seeing this crossing before. But then there was a difference where motorcycles were sent around and cars were not. I’ll have to look into it. I believe that was caused by toll stations not allowing motorcycles. I made a map edit and since then that has been corrected. I did not correct for scooters though. If I have a bit more time I’ll look into it in more detail. Or, if you want, you can check yourself too on opensteeetmap.org. Check for toll stations and the ferry terminals to see what vehicles they allow.

Super speedy response, as always! I'll check on openstreetmaps, and see what I can find. There are no tolls on any of these roads; none in British Columbia at all, so that shouldn't throw things off.
I was surprised that upping the scooter max speed to 110 kph didn't change the route. But again, there is no way to get to the ferry terminal from Vancouver without going on roads that would be very scary at 5o or 60 kph, so the high speed/ highway factor shouldn't push things around like this.
Anyway, no crisis and no panic. More of a funny thing. And thanks for all the excellent updates to an excellent app!
