Road characteristics/color coding
Quote from Nordtourer on 09.12.2024, 10:25Hey,
is there any description out there, how to interpret all the roads by its shown colors, dotted lines etc.?
Have a look at the attached picture, which shows a gps track in orange next to a purple dotted line. What kind of road is that, for instance.
Thanks for your comments

Quote from Guido on 09.12.2024, 16:12There is no complete legend at the moment. This will come back when I bring back the map customizer.
Purple (or a dotted line with other color and purple) means it's unpaved.

Quote from Guido on 19.08.2025, 08:41There is no legend as such. It's now integrated in the map customizer, where you can choose the colors of roads and many more things. More info here: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/scenic-4-custom-map-styles/#postid-12240

Quote from ryder_hook on 19.08.2025, 09:46Okay, then I didn't understand the principle. I just imported some map design from the link. It worked. Now I can also edit it. Very good. I explicitly removed the display of forestry roads, bike roads etc. Roads of types 1 to 7 are all displayed in orange tone and only these are activated. When I reopen the map, I find lines (which I know are not real roads, perhaps also forestry roads) that are displayed in grey.
What am I doing wrong?
I would like to be able to hide dirt roads (already during planning).

Quote from Middelfrangge on 19.08.2025, 22:38Hi,
you did that basically correct but it seems you miss specials. There are (not sure if the translation for each sector is correct because I use a german version) borders, roads (where you acticated 1-7) , special sctions, watercourses and railroads.
You need to go into special sections and change those specials like unpaved roads, private roads, under construction, tunnels and bridges.
Cheers

Quote from ryder_hook on 20.08.2025, 02:05Hi Thomas,
thanks for your hint, it helped a little bit. I was not aware about this extra section and I adopted again something. At the end it did not solved my problem. Here is an example.
As you can see on the screenshot, I can see roads in the grey color, many of them are grey, most of them are real roads with a tarmac or concrete surface, but some of them are gravel paths. I would like to either remove the grey roads or distinguish between gravel paths and roads.
I appreciate any further help!wishes

Problem is, the map isn´t correct / updated for all roads. I´m in Norway, and every now and then hit a gravel rod not marked as gravel road..

thanks for the information. I can imagine. But I do not understand why I'm not able to remove this grey lines. I cannot find anything in the map settings which is a kind of path and has the color grey. Perhaps anybody has an idea, what kind of object this is and I cannot remove the visibility.Wishes

you either change the appearence or switch off visibility of road 6 and 7.
Otherwise it is like Johan wrote. If the surface is not correct within the basemap you will not be able to distinguish between the roads. Thats not related to Scenic but to OSM as Map provider.
This is how it is with road 6 and 7 and w/o.

thanks that helped. What setting did you use for the second screenshot, it looks different to mine or Is this a consequence of the different zoom levels?

Quote from Middelfrangge on 20.08.2025, 03:40Hi ryder,
I am using a different mapstyle and the 2nd screen shot is just with road 6 and 7.
I would not switch off road 6 and 7 but change appearance by zoom levels otherwise you will not have any road through villages.
Make a copy of your mapstyle and test what fits best to your use. My mapstyle is as well available under map style if that fits better to your needs - take it and change your copy till it shows what you want to have.

I was also just going to suggest you have a look at my map style, where I did a lot of thinking and colour on these little roads:

my map is made for Norway with few names on cities and villages. Other countries might have more, the map gets cluttered, and you have to change the zoom level for those names to show.

Quote from GHJ on 21.08.2025, 08:13Thanks Johan, for the link to your Norwegian map style. The import works perfectly. As you mentioned, the map is a bit cluttered in densely populated areas like the Netherlands.
Perhaps other users have nice map styles that could be shared here. I look forward to it.

Also have a look at this forum topic where people share their styles: https://scenic.app/forum/topic/scenic-4-custom-map-styles/#postid-12240
Additionally, Scenic 4.23 was released yesterday, with new default map styles (that you can duplicate and make your own).

Hi Guido,
I really enjoyed the designation of dirt roads in purple on the previous map version. Taking your advice, I went to create my own map style to see if I could "put it back". However, when I click on "duplicate style" nothing happens. I tried restarting the app, then restarted my phone, with the same results - nothing. What am I missing? Thank you for your time.

I keep pushing duplicate style, but no other screen pops up. The popup goes away and nothing happens. I am back to default light & dark options. No name & description shows up.

Just a thought: Do you have display zoom / large text / bold text etc. enabled? Your font looks suspiciously big. Maybe that messes with the UI?

Quote from Chaos on 23.08.2025, 14:31I have an iPhone 14. Husband has an 11.
Followed sdk's advice and checked settings. I only had font bold, no zoom or anything. Turned the bold off, tried again, and same result. It will act like it's clicking the button, I see the button be clicked, and then it just goes back to the screen with light & dark options.
I recognize this may be a Me Problem, lol. This is a side of Scenic I hadn't learned yet, so I was eager to try it out to see if I could turn my dirt roads back to purple again because that was an excellent feature (for me) in the previous map version.

Quote from Guido on 23.08.2025, 15:02Since this happens both on your phone and your husband's phone, it's not just a "you" problem. Probably there are more people that have this problem, but they haven't tried this functionality yet or have not reported it to me. In the coming week I'll try to play a bit with some settings and different iPhones to see if I can find the root cause. Should you find anyting meanwhile, please let me know.

I was able to reproduce the problem on a MAC as well, here I also have It looks different than on the iPhone. So the problem does not occur on the iPhone and only occurs when using the default map style. When I use Johansw's map style, it displays correctly. Here are two screenshots from the same device.
