Recursive Folders and Routes-Backup
Quote from Ernst on 14.11.2022, 15:39Hi Guido,
I now have many routes in Scenic. The overview would be easier if I could create folders within folders.
Also, I would like to backup all routes. It would be great if all routes-gpx could be saved (for example) in a zip file.

Both are already on the feature request list, but it will take a while. This winter I'm working on the migration to the new HERE map framework. I'm adding some feature requests already while I'm doing that. The nested folder ones will have to wait until after that migration. It's quite some work as it requires a database change on the server as well. The batch GPX export is lower on the priority list so that will have to wait a while longer. Your routes are safe on the Scenic server, but I understand you also would like to have a backup outside of Scenic.
Best regards,
Guido

it's not only the thing, to have a backup. I had on our tour this summer many tracks saved and would like to import them in Basecamp and it was very annoying to export every single track instead of exporting a folder with all the tracks in it.

It should
Is there a folder on my phone I can find that allows me to back up the route data?
No, Scenic stores all data in a local (on-device, app specific) database. It’s not a file system.
You also say my routes are backed up on your server.
That’s correct the local database mentioned above contains all your data, from your account data, vehicles, routes, rides, pictures, etc. This local database syncs with the server database. The only crucial thing is that you should have a Scenic account (nickname, email and password). If you login to Scenic on a new/additional device (or remove Scenic and reinstall it), all your data will be downloaded from the Scenic server to your device.
If you want to be 100% sure that all your routes and rides are there, send me an email mentioning your Scenic nickname and I will send you a list of all routes and rides I have for you on the server. Then you can cross check if everything is there.
Hope this helps/explains.

I don't care that much, but this data and metadata should be e2e encrypted.

Hi did anything get done with Route and Recorded Rides backups?
I have a concern these could be lost and if I do an icloud backup it includes all offline maps and comes in at 12 gig of data.
I had to turn this off or pay for more storage.

Quote from Guido on 28.05.2025, 10:17Are you sure the 12 gigs are from Scenic? I specifically exclude offline maps from being backed up.

Quote from HighPeakRider on 28.05.2025, 11:44Yes, I got an email from Apple saying I was short of storage, deleted the Scenic backup and all good.
I'll turn it on again and see what happens.

Quote from Guido on 28.05.2025, 13:37To be honest, I don't understand. Can you show me how you exclude Scenic from your backup? I didn't think it was possible to exclude apps from your backup. You cán prevent apps from using iCloud to store data, but Scenic doesn't use iCloud to store data as far as I'm aware. Is Scenic in the "Others" list in your second screenshot?
Also, what maps do you have installed in Scenic?

Quote from Guido on 28.05.2025, 13:45If you go to iOS Settings > General > iPhone Storage, how much GB is indicated there for Scenic?
My backup size for Scenic is 994 MB, but storage on iPhone is 5.74 GB, so it looks like offline maps not being backed up is working. So, the 12GB is probably coming from other data in Scenic.
How much routes and rides do you have? Have you been taking pictures during rides and/or adding them afterwards?

I have 50 recorded rides, 4 locations, no photos.
Im not sure where it gets the 12 gig from, but you can see when I delete Scenic from the backup i saved over 6 gig of icloud storage.
Maps I only have England and Wales installed.
In iphone storage it’s 11.56 gig

Quote from Guido on 28.05.2025, 14:22I only can think of one more reason you backup size is so big, but it doesn't align with your iPhone storage for Scenic.
Are you using satellite / hybrid maps? If so, these are cached on the iPhone and not excluded from the backup. (I should/will change that as there is no need to back those up).
Nevertheless, your storage on iPhone is 11.56 GB. England and Wales are 3.5 GB together (which is included in the backup) and lets take around 1GB of other data that is not included in the backup, so your backup size should be around 7GB, not 12 GB.
To be honest, I don't know how this is possible.
For the next update I'll make sure the satellite map cache is excluded from backup. In any case, you can safely remove Scenic from your iCloud backup, because all your data is stored on the Scenic server anyway.

Yes I always use satellite maps, living in the country it’s nice to see the surrounding area.
That seems to explain it, many thanks…….

Quote from Guido on 29.05.2025, 16:10No. You can’t. Sorry.
What you can do, if you really want, is remove Scenic completely and then redownload through the App Store. That will make you start with a clean slate. But it’s only a matter of time before the cache gets full again. In the next version I will exclude the satellite cache form the backup.
Meanwhile, you can choose to exclude Scenic from your backup all together. Like mentioned… there is not really a need to backup as part of your phone backup. If you reinstall Scenic after a restore, and then login, all your data will be synced from the Scenic server.
