Recover deleted route or prevent loss
Quote from Dad-rideagain on 09.09.2025, 23:26I have unintentionally lost/deleted routes several times. Is there a way to recover them? (New user) Scenic does not seem to ask to confirm a deletion to be sure, one click and it’s gone. Or am I doing something wrong?
this time I had a good planned route. Made a copy of it then went to edit the copy a lot after changing the name. After saving that new route under what I thought was the new name, both routes are now the poor modified one. Does the program make a backup?
thanks

Im not sure what happened with the route duplication and editing. Are you sure both routes were changed? I’m double checking because I never heard of this problem before.

When I delete a route from the route list I do see that prompt. This problem seems to occur when editing a route. I'll try to explain. I've lost other route attempts by a similar process so it may be me. In this case, I made the initial route "Thackeray..." as a main desired route. Then I made a copy, opened the copy to modify (reduce) the route. When one opens a route it ask "Replace route" - replace I assumed this puts the selected route on the screen. I proceeded to make major changes reducing the ride. When I click the disk icon to save is were I think I lost the original. Scenic ask to make changes "save as changes to Thackeray... or new route. I chose to save to the file with the name assuming it was saving to the route I had opened and was working on. Perhaps logically, it does not ask to confirm at this point which makes sense. However there is no "undo" and I'm not aware of a backup one can go to. I should note that I was working on an iPad and could not see the full name as we can on the screen shot. This group of routes names all start the same so would look the same on the iPad screen. The problem is when I went back to the routes page both routes were now the same and the original was gone: The shot below shows the save point though with full name. The next shot shows the routes as they now were. The bottom one was the original - now gone, and the next one up is the edited "new" version. Both are the same. The top two are just attempts to get something back and see what happened for today.

saving the edited file - only beginning of file name was visible on the iPad.[/caption]
[caption id="attachment_9618" align="alignnone" width="653"]
Bottom route was very different - a northern part and over an hour long. The second from the bottom is the revised version saved when editing.[/caption]
I hope this shows what I might be doing wrong.
So far Scenic has been working well between the iPhone, Macbook, and the new ipad as long as I quit and restart. This editing was done on the iPad but as expected showed also on the other two when I looked.
Thank you for your help

Quote from Guido on 10.09.2025, 13:29I'm not sure if you're doing anything wrong, but here's a screen recording of me doing what you are doing (or maybe should be doing?). As far as I can tell, I'm doing the same as you, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
In any case I can not reproduce this problem: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aT62G2N9Iv0oTg6-DuFQtWvLDEUTvDUh/view?usp=share_link
Regarding backup... there is no backup of older saved versions. But, during editing, there are undo and redo buttons in the bottom toolbar of the planner.

Quote from Dad-rideagain on 10.09.2025, 18:01Yes, what you did looks just like what I think I did with only difference being that I went through the arrow in the upper right and then clicked “plan" rather than startng with the “edit” menu. I just tested that process which also provides the same, expected, results as what you did. It must be something I’m doing wrong perhaps through the copying / renaming and then going to the ride/plan page. I’ll pay closer attention to all those steps carefully and other time I lose some changes. I’ll also watch if it occurs on the iPad only as this was the first time I used it to edit. Thanks for looking into it and I’m glad it isn’t a bug.
I don’t know how hard it would be to have a “recently deleted” folder where previous versions would go when written over to help with recovering from our mistakes.
