Problems with shortcuts using CarPlay

Hi,

I am new using Scenic. I have chosen this app since the general opinion is good about it. In the past 4 days I rode ~2000 kms and used this app and have some practical experiences I would like to share.

1. It seems in 3D mode is much more slower than in 2D mode. In tight / dynamic  city environment where the crosses are too frequent I would not recommend the 3D mode. You may miss some turn then get in trouble.

2. Good point... Maybe I am wrong, but IMHO using Scenic means lower consumption of battery energy comparing to Google Maps for example. This means my phone works longer.

3. Have a see the attached picture. The shortcuts screen is different on the iPhone and on the bike onboard display. On the onboard display several shortcuts are missing. The lack of "gas station" is the most painful. To find the nearest gas station during the navigation is complicated if I stick to use Scenic. I have to stop the bike, disconnect the CarPlay communication, and click the gas station icon on the phone. I know, there are workarounds for the problem solving, but I would not like to use another navi app temporary, I would like to use Scenic. Just stopping on the road is usually dangerous, not possible/legal.

4. The application does not always respect the tracking line thickness and color settings (in the settings menu). Then it happens that after a round, the color and thickness will suddenly match the settings.

5. Skipping the next via or stop doesn't always work either perfectly. It usually asks if I'm sure I want to skip, and then after saying yes, it sometimes gets involved in some confusing route saving/questioning. But it also happened that after clicking, it answered that there was currently no next via, even though there were about thirty. Or simply nothing happened after clicking. Note that I try to use this function on fly, and if I have to dive in the display watching I can cause some accident on a curvy road. Avoiding the next via in a normal world must be maximum 1-2 click, not more.

If I could make a suggestion, it would be useful to have a programmable shortcut on the map. For example, you could program the nearby gas station function on this, so you don't need the other screen, which lacks shortcuts. Belongs to this... it's also worth keeping in mind that many motorcycle dashboard displays are not touchscreens, but rather require buttons to navigate between shortcuts.

Either way, my first impressions of the app are definitely good. If the app continues to be developed in the future, this will be a 5/5 product for bikers.

Thank you for your feedback @alibiman. I appreciate you taking the time.
Please see my response below. If you have any further questions, please let me know.

We are working together with Scenic's map provider on improving performance of the 3D mode. Indeed the 3D mode requires much more performance from a graphics perspective. On CarPlay, especially if connected to CarPlay wirelessly, there can be an additional delay.

2. Good point... Maybe I am wrong, but IMHO using Scenic means lower consumption of battery energy comparing to Google Maps for example. This means my phone works longer.

That's good to hear. Especially with offline maps installed (Scenic doesn't need to connect to network, which is battery consuming) this can be the case.

The ability to add a stop (including fuel) during navigation will be added to CarPlay soon.

Hmmm. OK. If this happens again, would you mind sending me a screenshot? If you take a screenshot with your iPhone, while connected to CarPlay, the CarPlay screen will also be captured.

You can turn off the "confirmation" question in Settings > Navigation & Tracking > Detour behaviour (Ask to confirm skipping waypoints). This will save you 1 click. If you are not on the route at the moment you tap the button, or Scenic is recalculation just at that moment, then Scenic doesn't know what the next via is, so it will give you that message.

Apple CarPlay limits the buttons on the screen to maximum 4. Some (smaller) CarPlay displays only allow 3. These are quite necessary already (menu button, zoom in and zoom out button (if you are on manual zoom) and the "skip waypoint" button. The add stop (incl fuel) button will be added in the top toolbar (which appears if you tap the screen or push "up" on the physical buttons.).

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Hi Guido,

Thank you for the answers!

1. Understand and accept.
2. Interesting, because on one travel I had to switch to Google maps, and I have offline maps in this application too.  And from that point on, my phone's battery started to drop precipitously. I had to connect my phone with a cable, otherwise it would have died before the finish line. So Scenic consumes less energy even if the another app uses offline maps as well. If I use only Scenic with wireless CarPlay connection, I can arrive to the target with min. 20% battery level. With Google maps this si not possible.
3. Very good news! 🙂
4. I will be on it, but cannot promise, because not sure I can stop in-time. Try to do my best...
5. I am aware that I can switch off the confirmation question. I intentionally left it ON, because I'm not yet an experienced enough user of the application, and I'm afraid that I'll accidentally fire an important via without confirmation. By the way, this one confirmation question is not a problem at all. The problem is when the program somehow gets lost and after confirmation it slips into some save/don't save question. It's like it slips into some "if... else if" or "select case" routine, etc., somehow randomly. I haven't been able to figure out when it does this yet, I'll try to reproduce it.

I do appreciate your very detailed answers to all points. This level of support is very rare these days.

Hi @alibiman,

The problem is when the program somehow gets lost and after confirmation it slips into some save/don't save question. It's like it slips into some "if... else if" or "select case" routine, etc., somehow randomly. I haven't been able to figure out when it does this yet, I'll try to reproduce it.

Yes please. If you could try and reproduce this if... else loop that could be very helpful. I'm not sure what this could be at the moment.

Thanks again for your feedback.
