Problems with Scenic 3.5 and Apple CarPlay
Quote from Sampleman on 02.02.2024, 16:04Hi Guido,
just upgraded my Scenic App to 3.5, and gave it a brief try today. I have a Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin, which has a TFT display which is compatible with Apple CarPlay (ACP). I prefer Scenic, because it runs fine on my Honda display, while I can leave my iPhone in my jacket.
I encountered a nasty problem right in the beginning. When you open Scenic on the ACP screen, it offers you either to choose from routes stored on your device or you can put in a destination. I wanted to go from Augsburg to Affing, which is a small town nearby. It is about a 20 minute ride.
However, Scenic 3.5 was not able to find "Affing". This seems strange, because the app even remembered that I had searched for Affing before (actually, I went to Affing half a year ago, when I had installed Scenic the first time). Instead, the app suggested some addresses of businesses somewhere in Augsburg which did not have any relationship to Affing. So I took out my iPhone and opened the app on the phone. I searched for Affing, and it was found immediately (it isn't that small, actually). After having confirmed the search result on the phone, I could put away the phone and follow the route on the ACP display.
In brief: It seems to be impossible to search for a destination in the ACP interface. The app allows you to type in your destination on the ACP screen, but it does not find it.
(I am pretty sure that this problem has not been there in the earlier version. And I'd like to share another interesting observation: I have exactly the same problem when using Calimoto. The app finds any destination when you use the phone screen for searching, but it does not find any destination when you use ACP for it.)
Apart from that, the new app looks great. I hope that you find a solution for my problem.
Best regards

Quote from Guido on 06.02.2024, 13:14OK. So, I looked into this, and I can't really reproduce this. It's working here for me. A few things that might explains this, though:
- Are you using Wireless CarPlay? If so, this works by setting up a Wifi connection between your phone and the CarPlay system. In other words, you will disconnect from any other WiFi once you connect to your CarPlay system. Also, because you connect to a Wifi, your phone will think that internet is provided through that Wifi. It takes a while for the phone to realize no internet is available through that Wifi, and switch to cellular data. During that time, you don't have a connection. I'm not sure, but I think, this "while" is a lot longer when your iPhone is locked. That would explains why it does start working once you take your phone out, unlock it, and start searching there. This might also explain why you have the same problem with Calimoto.
In Scenic, you might get some results for HERE Offline if you have cached map data and/or offline maps installed. But, this brings me to the 2nd point:
- The HERE Offline and HERE Online search, searches in a 10km radius from your current location. (For the next update I will increase this to 15km). The offline search engine will only search in that radius. The HERE Online engine will also return results outside this radius if no results are found inside the radius. But again, you'll need internet for that.
Hope this explains.
Cheers,
Guido

Hi Guido, I did some testing and found a solution which seems to work.
1. Finding: It does not make any difference if I use my CarLinkit wireless adapter or if I connect my phone via USB cable.
2. I did a test and put in the search string "München Bayerstrasse 16" (this is about 55 km away from my home address). Here Maps did not find any results, neither offline nor online. Apple seems to find a result which is rubbish, a Bayerstrasse in Augsburg. I had to scroll down to Google, search for the address with Google and then get a proper route.
If you look at the screen above, it is taken from my phone in portrait orientation. The display of my Honda is in landscape orienation, so I did not see the option to search with Google in the first place. Now I know how to get there and get Scenic to create a route.
I'd like to make a proposal for the future. As far as I have seen it, when navigating to one single spot I have only two routing options: Fastest route or shortest route. I can exclude some roads like Autobahns or toll roads. I would love to have the option to choose a scenic, curvy road to one destination.
Thank you again for your great work!
Best regards
Frank

Quote from massi on 11.02.2024, 07:48I have this problem not only with carplay. It occurs also when using the App on the iPhone directly.(Version 3.52)
When I e.g. search for "Taaken", a little town near Bremen, I get with "Here offline" no results and with "Here online" a bunch full of gas stations. Scenic does interprete "Taaken" seemingly as "Tanken" (german word for refueling). Only "Google" shows the right search result.
