possible MapStyleEditor enhancements
Quote from smoeke on 06.06.2025, 02:37Hi,
I almost finished my personal MapStyle and there are three points which are not perfect to me at the moment:
1. Within the Category 7. Residential Roads there are often Links for the driveways of houses etc.. Those get the additional „Private“ flag in the data, which is fine, as you are normally not suppose to drive there, except you are living or visiting there.
There is the oprion to mark those streches/links with additional color and stripes, that is really good. The only thing is, that the dashed display futhermore distracts a bit more from the real roads.
From my point of view it would be nice to e.g. seperate these private links from category 7, (like in an category 8 or so) so you could disable those at all, provide them a different width/color or even start showing those in the map when you are really zooming in more.
2. For Charging Station POIs it would be really cool to have different Icons and setting options (e.g. enable/disable for different zoom levels) for different charging station types (e.g. AC and DC, and/or charging speeds like max.22KW, min. 50KW, min. 150KW, min 300KW).
So it would be possible to find faster chargers in the map easier etc. At the moment all POIs show up at the same level with the same Icon and color.
3. Related to the POIs of ParkingLots and Garages I discovered that there are many Entries to Parking by foot and also private Parkings included, which are a bit irritating sometimes. Here it would be cool to get the possibility to filter for public parking (entrance for vehicles) etc.
One more general thing: If there are many POIs on the map near each other, would it be possible to Stack those Icons from one category and adding a „+“ or the number to the Icon? This could clean up the map sometimes.
Not to get my request wrong: I am really happy with Scenic and the MapStyleEditor! You got the only (and very good) app which provides such possibilities!
Thanks for your effort!

Would you share your mape style? Would be nice to have a look as I am also spending a lot of time tying to make it as visible as possible according to my needs. Here is my result - so far..:

Yes, for sure. Also thanks for your Style.
I activated Relief and Contour Lines in my general view as well, but then you have to download the map, afaik. The pictures are near the zoom level I normally use. Zoomed far out the map is not beautiful at the moment. 😀

I started to create an additional Style for night as well, but it is still needs adaptions for the colors. Some polygons are still to bright.

There are still many tweaks to do, for both views. But at least for my upcoming vacation it will work.

I'll add it to the feature request list. Should technically be possible. Will take a while as there are higher priorities at the moment.
For Charging Station POIs it would be really cool to have different Icons and setting options (e.g. enable/disable for different zoom levels) for different charging station types (e.g. AC and DC, and/or charging speeds like max.22KW, min. 50KW, min. 150KW, min 300KW).
Again technically possible, although I doubt the data will be reliable / up to date. For this purpose I would recommend finding another source of types of charging stations and import them as a personal POI group. Here is the data that theoretically can be stored for a charging station: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dcharging_station so there is a way to store wattage, connector type, etc. But it's not (yet) being commonly filled out by the map editors.
3. Related to the POIs of ParkingLots and Garages I discovered that there are many Entries to Parking by foot and also private Parkings included, which are a bit irritating sometimes. Here it would be cool to get the possibility to filter for public parking (entrance for vehicles) etc.
I am already filtering out private parkings, but mabye they are tagged differently. Could you perhaps send me some examples of:
- Private parkings that are still showing on the map
- Parking entrances only accessibly by foot (it's better not to show that indeed)
To send me those examples, send me the coordinates, or an OpenStreetMap link. To send coordinates, long press on the map, choose "copy coordinates" and select DEC. You can copy/paste that coordinate in openstreetmap.org, and the copy/past the link from the address bar.One more general thing: If there are many POIs on the map near each other, would it be possible to Stack those Icons from one category and adding a „+“ or the number to the Icon? This could clean up the map sometimes.
That's not possible, but I can disable POI overlapping. If I disable that, if there are POIs very close to eachother then only one will show, until you zoom in to a level that they are far enough apart to show more. I'll add it to the list to make that a setting, so you can choose.

Quote from smoeke on 06.06.2025, 09:20Thanks for your answer and considering the requests Guido!
No worry if it takes some time!
Also a good idea to use external POIs for charging stations. Will have a look at it!
Stacking POIs was just an idea, maybe the option you described works as well. Will check it as soon as the switch will be available. 🙂
For the Parking topic I sent an email a couple of minutes ago.
Thank you very much!
