Offline route calculation failed, and no internet connection to try online
Quote from joe on 07.07.2024, 19:11I've been using the free version of scenic for a few weeks now. I've logged several rides, and created maybe 10 or 15 routes already. One route I have been planning quite extensively almost every night for the last three weeks and suddenly I opened it up to find this error.
Using the free version, there is no offline map access so I'm unsure how this even occurred. I was editing it without issue earlier in the day, and now it appears all of my efforts are lost. I don't see any settings available in the iOS or MacOS versions that would set this map to some sort of offline mode.
My plan was to use the premium trial when we took this trip in a month, and if it worked out well, I'd continue to use the full version. But until my trip, I have no need for the premium features.
Please don't tell me that all of my efforts are lost. If I have to re-create this route from scratch, I might as well try a different app. Is there a way to recover this?
I've shared the route to myself via sms, and have been considering trying to delete the route in the app and saving it from the shared link. But I could see how that would backfire, especially since the route is not public.

Quote from joe on 08.07.2024, 10:52Hi Guido! Thank you for the prompt response. I just sent you the route using the email from the help page within the app. I provided the link to the route, and a link to this thread for reference.
I just realized I did not change the subject line, so it is the generic help/support subject line that is populated by default from the help link on mobile.
I mentioned that the route is not set to public, would that be necessary for you to open it?
Regards, Joe

Quote from joe on 10.07.2024, 08:14Issue resolved. Problem was via point density.
For the record, my route had 115 Via's, and 16 stops. Take from that what you will when planning large routes :). Guido managed to skim it down to 65 via's, so I'll have to keep that in mind as I finish planning this route.

Quote from Guido on 10.07.2024, 11:23Here some general recommendations for creating routes:
- If possible, try to create one route per day, as opposed to one big route for a multi-day trip. This is more efficient/faster from a route calculation and recalculation perspective. In other words, the entire route does not need to be recalculated if you deviate from the route during riding. It also gives you a bit more flexibility if plans change. You can place all the routes for one trip in a folder to keep them together. Name them "Day 01 ...", "Day 02 ..." etc. so that you can sort them nice alphabetically.
- Try to keep the number of waypoints (start + vias + stops + destination) below 70. For a normal day-route this should be more than enough.
- Place via points between junctions. Not ON junctions. If placed ON a junction, Scenic needs to "guess" at which road of the junction the via point belongs... and sometimes it guesses wrong, causing it to send you down the wrong road, only to turn you back later (through a u-turn or circle around the block) to get you to the next waypoint.
- Zoom in a bit when you place the via points, and try to make sure the via points are actually on the road. If they are not, the same "sending you down the wrong road" can occur.
- Start with placing the start and destination, and then your planned stops. See how the route turns out. Possibly adjust the routing mode (fast/short/avoidances) to get a better match to what you want. Then, once you have the rough route as you want it more or less, add via points to force it to take the roads you want. Place the via point more or less in the middle of two other waypoints, and see how the route turns out. Maybe that one via point is already enough to get what you want. If it's not, place another via point more or less in the middle of two existing via points, increasing the via point "density" as you go.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Guido
