Offline maps and network connectivity question.

This might be dumb question, but does Scenic work exclusively with offline downloaded maps, or it there some way to make use of "live" info when network connectivity is available so as to give real time traffic situations? I have never been clear on this.

Something I'd like to see in Scenic would be the ability to "merge" recorded tracks. Stopping and starting rides on a particular day results in multiple individual tracks being recorded. Merging them into one track would tidy things up IMO. I understand that you can just leave Scenic running once you START (in CarPlay), but with unfortunate app crashes which happen let's face it, you sometimes need to restart things.

Thanks, and continue the good work Guido. Scenic is getting better and better.
I'm on 4.05 now and it's absolutely useable.

You can use Scenic 4 without offline maps. If you have an internet connection, there are only a few differences.

If you do NOT have offline maps installed and do NOT have a connection, then:

  1. Routes can not be calculated nor re-calculated (if you deviate from the route).
  2. The map can not be displayed on screen / only shows very basic high level roads.
Side note: Scenic does store some map data in its map-cache and might be able to pull data from that to display the map, but there is no guarantee. Basically, the map cache is a fixed amount of limited disk space that stores recently accessed map data for quick retrieval. If the cache is full, and you access new map data (i.e. a new map area), then the oldest map data is removed from the cache to make room for the new data.

If you do NOT have offline maps installed (regardless if you have a connection or not):

  1. Speed limit can not be displayed
  2. Speeding warnings can't be displayed
  3. The current road name can't be displayed

Scenic 4 does NOT have any traffic or road closure information at the moment. This will be added later again. Traffic information is ALWAYS is online (as this is rapidly changing information). Meaning... if you have a connection at the moment of route (re-) calculation, traffic can be taken into account. If you do NOT have a connection at that moment, traffic can not be taken into account obviously.

The track-merge feature has been on the feature request list for quite some time. Once Scenic 4 is back to the Scenic 3.5 quality and feature set, I'll have time to look at the feature requests again.

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Hi All,

I am a new user and had issues over the weekend when using offline maps and gpx. It would allow me to add my gpx but when selecting ride it stated “No Internet”

it was in the Lake District so I was very keen to have an entire offline experience rather to then needing to ride a way then when ontop of a valley going through the process. I am sure it’s a noob mistake I made but if someone could tell me where I went wrong?

Hi @daggerrpm,

I'm not sure what caused this error message. Next time, when you get this message, could you perhaps make a screenshot? The exact message might help me find what's causing it.

Here some troubleshooting steps:
- Are you sure you had the offline maps installed for the region? (Open side menu > profile picture > offline maps).
- Was your current location in the area of the installed offline maps?

Best regards,
Guido

Ah, thank you. I thought I had downloaded the maps but running through your steps above it doesn’t look like I had. I have now downloaded the uk and will test again at the weekend.

thanks for the quick response 🙂
