Offline Features - POIs, etc. not found?

Here's one for the Brains Trust.

Yesterday I was down in Melbourne, our state's capital for an appointment. While there we found that the local cell coverage was down (couldn't even pay our bill for the appointment).

Anyway, when we left I programmed Scenic to take us to Costco. However, despite searching for it Scenic couldn't find it. Ended up having to navigate using the car's built-in navigator and it took us down suburban streets, not back to the freeway as planned.

Anyway, the off-line maps in Scenic on the iPhone are up-to-date. If I knew the street that it was on I'd have manually typed that in instead of just entering "Costco" in the search bar.

So, what data is stored in the off-line maps? Are POIs like shopping centres, in this case, Costco, stored? I've noticed that it will often produce a list of results from offline maps, Google and even Apple Maps when searching for destinations. But they weren't working yesterday due to the mobile service outage.

Thanks

Martin

I just tried with iPhone in airplane mode and offline map of Mexico installed. I searched for Starbucks, Costco and IKEA. Got search results for all three.

It might be that Costco stores are not entered in the map in your country. OSM data can vary per country as the maps are maintained by an army of volunteers who mostly update the map on their region only.

Maybe you can try the same… device in airplane mode and then search again for Costco. Try Starbucks too.

Yep, some Costcos were there but not the one that I was looking for.

As for Starbucks, there are a few of them still here in Australia. They never really took off. Local cafes are more popular. McCafes are in all McDonalds "restaurants" but you'd have to be desperate to drink that, in my view.

Anyway, coffee-rant aside, I now have a better understanding of this.

Thanks.

Off topic, but since you mentioned it...

Good for you guys!  Although, to be fair, one afternoon  years ago I was driving on the highway and approached a service area, which had a Starbucks.  I was craving a coffee, so I exited the highway and went inside, hoping for a quick, inexpensive pre-brewed drip coffee, ready to go from one of those insulated pump dispensers.  Plenty of that, but I was avoiding caffeine at the time, and they had no decaf.  I asked the "barista" (is that what they're called?)... turns out they don't keep brewed decaf ready because there's hardly any call for it.  She was very nice and very apologetically said the best she could do was to brew me a fresh pour-over cup.  Delicious, and she charged me the cheap drip coffee price!  Nice!

We are certainly confirming the “adventure-rider-going-to-Starbucks” stereotype here 😅
