New version, dead legs etc
Quote from chrisk on 07.05.2025, 12:22Hi, I accidentally updated the new scenic app and can’t say that I’m impressed (It happened whilst updating all app as on the phone). I was a big fan of this and have used it across europe a few times. I really don’t want to sound negative as it’s a good app, so apologies if this sounds like a moan.
The planner is more or less unusable on a phone as if you don’t pin an exact part on the same side of the same road the trip ends up with loops and dead legs all over the place. I thought this was just me, but I’ve just selected a destination and the attached screenshot shows the app has generated a dead leg! This is unworkable In afraid, I’ve been using google maps instead.
I also preferred the old options available with “fast, curvy” etc. I’ve tried to generate a curvy route from Pamplona to Madrid and I have to choose between 7.5 hrs for highways or 11 without, I’m sure the old app allowed more selection using the options. Maybe it’s me not using it correctly.
All in all not happy I’m afraid.
Thanks
Chris

I don’t agree. It is perfect that Scenic is as detailed as is! Maybe you want to make a turn on the motorway for some reason - then you can control it in detail and pick your lane in advance.
Just great, i have needed and used it 👌

I accidentally updated the new scenic app
It’s good that you updated. I was forced to switch to a new map provider and the contract with the old provider ended, so Scenic 3 no longer works. More information here: https://scenic.app/scenic-4-the-whole-story/
if you don’t pin an exact part on the same side of the same road the trip ends up with loops and dead legs all over the place.
This can have 2 reasons:
1. Indeed the pin is on the wrong side of the road. If it’s a road with a road side separator (like highway), Scenic will try to get you to the pin nevertheless, and to do that, a u-turn or small loop is required to get you to it from “the other way”.
2. More likely: was routing mode set to curvy? If you are designing your route yourself, in other words, dropping via points on the roads you want, I don’t recommend using curvy mode. Curvy mode can add additional via points which can cause loops.I’ve just selected a destination and the attached screenshot shows the app has generated a dead leg!
I’m not seeing the screenshot, but it’s possible this happens due to difference in routing algorithm of Kurviger and Scenic. This also happened with Scenic 3.
I also preferred the old options available with “fast, curvy” etc.
Unfortunately I can not bring these options back. Our curvy routing provider Kurviger changed its model and no longer makes these other routing modes available to 3rd party apps that use their service

Quote from sdk on 07.05.2025, 14:26You have a ton more options now. "curvy" is actually the famous Kurviger algorithm - in a way - different than the old one (afaik) due to kurviger limiting api options. The sliders in "Standards" is something to getting used to. Road type all the way to the left is too adventurous. It's pulling me off the street, just to includea curve and then back onto the same road. Second left setting is perfect for me, third from the left (middle setting) already starts including the Autobahn.
You can also try other modes, like the car calculation with avoid highways.
I tried a few roundtrip generations in my area - no legs, no loops (around Mannheim 300km in all directions).
Did you unintentionally touch "reverse route"? That creates loops and legs (and it warns about it...).
The planner is one of the main reasons I started to use scenic. And it got sooo much more powerful than anything else I've seen. The concept with moving the map instead of placing a cursor is genious. The new model where the map stays there and you can switch modes from edit to navigate on the fly and edit and change routes all without ending tracking is amazing (it only felt weird the first day until I understood the concept). Sharing maps with people that automatially update when the host makes a change is just the tip of the iceberg. Overlays, where I can put a track on the map, and overlay it with a route is a life saver to import basecamp routes and adjust the scenic route to match the basecamp one. Yay - Group rides without navi deviation!
POI import and overlay and the new map customizer.... man, I'm watching scenic evolve and Guido is a programmer wizard (being a programmer myself, that's not a baseless shoutout). This project has been pushed through a lot of trouble in recent months - the kind of trouble that a project could die from... and Guido pulled it off to bring scenic back - in may ways better - is some ways still lacking.
I suggest to try to figure it out and work with scenic. It's worth it. Otherwise, use something else - but come back in a few months (or next motorcycle season) and try it again when it's fully out of the map-provider-change-and-add-back-all-the-features-valley.

Looks like I just need to use it more. I just redid the route with ‘curvy’ set and again the route has dead legs. I’ve redone it with ‘standard’ and one along on the ‘adventurous to highways scale’.
Let’s see how that works.
Thanks all.
