More pins in the route

Hello there,

when i was making routes i found out that there is a max for the numbers of pins (150) for a route. In the other versions there where a max of 199 pins. Is this possible again in this version? I make routes that are like around 300km and sometimes i’m a bit short of pins i can put in the route.

greetings, Roy

A trick?

When I make complicated routes, I place a lot of pins to force thenrouting. When finished, I look the route over and start removing pins here and there. If route does not change by doing so, fine! If it changes, I just undo and try the next pin etc.

When making the route, you need much more pins than when the route is finished as next and next pin holdes the track 🙂

Johan

Thank you Johan. Yes, indeed. For a 300km route, typically you need way less than 150 points. 10 or 20 should suffice, maybe a bit more, if you really want to take the little road that the route calculation is not already taking you. In general... the less via points, the better.
What I personally always do when planning routes:

  1. Place start
  2. Place end
  3. Place any stops (where you plan to actually stop, like gas stations, restaurants, sight seeing...)
  4. Now, check what the route looks like, and if there's a road you want to take that the routing is not taking you already, drop a via point in the middle of that road (not on junctions).
  5. Try to drop via points first in the middle betwee two existing markers (not directly after an already existing marker). Then check how that changes the route. More often than not, that 1 via point might already calculate the rest of the route between those two markers the way you want it.

If you are importing a route, and Scenic auto-places a lot of via points, a lot of times you can remove a lot of them without it changing the route. (This is what Johan mentioned above).

Hope this helps/explains. If not, please let me know if you have other questions. Happy to help.

Best regards and ride safe,
Guido.

Hello,

i know that you can remove the pins and that route will stay there as it should be. But if you share the route, send it to someone else who isn’t using scenic then he or she get a other route. That’s why i like to put some more pins in there.

greetings, Roy

Hi Giuido,

I'm going to add onto this thread rather than starting another. With the various languages, I may have chosen the wrong thread, and so another would be better, but I'm following up on your post, #3, above.

The issue is the number of pins or waypoints that Scenic adds to imported routes. I created routes in MRA and in RouteYou, exported them as .gpx 1.2, and then imported them into Scenic using the web app. In both exported files, Scenic adds a huge number of points that I just don' t thing are necessary. The I have to go back and manually delete them, either individually or using the batch delete. That works, but it is cumbersome, especially if I create a separate route for each day of riding. It adds a lot of frustrating work.

Below are images of the original route created in MRA, then the imported resuilt in Scenic from MRA and then from RouteYou. The orignial route only has three points. Scenic seems to create 44 or 48 points. Way too many, certainly. I get the same result using routes created in REVER.

I wish that didn't happen, but if it is unavoidable, is there a way to have a function that would 'thin' the points, keeping only points necessary to preserve the route? The imports are accurate (though this is not a complex area of roads) but that makes the number of points unnecessary.

Finally, the last image shows the first import attempt, where the two import options show much different distances. In this case, the 'Tracks' distance of 472 kms is correct.

Most importantly, a huge thanks for all you've done on this app. 4.16 already! Bravo!

I fully understand what you mean. This is a fundamental question, one that I’ve been dealing with for many years.

It’s still on my list to try and reliably reduce the number of via points without changing the shape of the route, but it’s not easy. If you are interested, here is a blog article I wrote back in 2016: https://scenic.app/turn-turn-instructions-gpx-tracks-everything-never-wanted-know/

The article mentions another method, which I’ve tried with Scenic 4, but this has other disadvantages.

In short, I have yet to find the ideal solution.

@dn_dekker. In this case, where you also have the route in the GPX file, it’s probably easier to import the route, and add via points to get the route that you want.

Holy Crap! What are you doing up at 1:30 in the morning? That is Rome time; perhaps it is only 12:30 / 00:30 where you are. Still....

Thanks for the very rapid reply. I have not seen that article and I will read it now.

Many many thanks!
