More issues editing while tracking/navigation

I’ve experienced a couple more issues when I’ve edited an existing route during navigation or added a route to tracking.

Firstly, I changed an existing route that was actively being ridden to add in a couple of stops.  Scenic wouldn’t place a couple of via points where I wanted them and consistently placed them well off the road.  I used Undo and tried a few times, in different places close by, but the vias would not be placed on the road.  I had zoomed right in and was definitely tapping on the road.  (Others I placed worked just fine.)  I knew roughly where to go (for fuel) so ended up deviating from the route ‘free hand’ and when I got to the placed I’d tried, and failed, to place a via point there was one there greyed out as if I’d already passed it.  See screenshot.   No option to skip a via had been offered.  The pink route line is trying to turn me back to the first active (unreached) Via.  So to be clear, the grey Via1 wouldn’t place on the road so I undid the placement and left it out but it was there on the road when I passed the location.

Secondly (and repeatedly for me over the last few months), when tracking a ride (following a friend) I added a route (Edit/Change Route) to take me home further along the route my friend had plotted.  I chose not to be guided to route start.  We set off, Scenic wouldn’t track so I killed the app and restarted ‘resuming’ the ride.  I was then given navigation to the start of the route despite selecting I didn’t want that and when I arrived at the start point I was told I’d reached my destination and my planned route no longer existed.

This has been on a bike using CarPlay but given the problems similar to these that I’ve been having I’ve been very careful this weekend to resume Scenic’s navigation or tracking on my phone before switching to CarPlay.

I think there is a combination of things going on here. I'll try and break it down. They might be related, but can't be sure of that until further investigation.

First point...
- Via point not placed where the crosshair is while editing route during navigation. Probably a bug. Will take a look.
- Via was placed (and marked as reached), even though you 'undid' the placement while editing route during navigation. Probably also a bug. Will take a look.

Second point...
- Scenic not continuing to track after adding a route during tracking session. That's a bug. Will investigate.
- After resuming a route, guidance to route start even though that was not selected. This is not really a bug. If the bug above would not have happened, you would not have killed the app. In an actual app crash, you are probably following the route, and you want to be guided to the first unreached waypoint.
- Scenic saying "destination reached" and removing route when arriving at start point (after a resume following app kill). Could also be a bug. Was this a round trip?

If you're enjoying Scenic and are happy with the support, please leave a nice rating in the App Store. It would mean a lot to me ❤️

Not a round trip.  Remembering better, the route I’d planned wasn’t showing (no route line) as I got close enough to show the area on the map, the green route start flag was in place and the nav instructions top left of screen were guiding to route start and with no more turns involved to get to the route start was counting down distance.

And a poor choice of words on my description, by Scenic not continuing to track I meant the current location marker arrow didn’t move with my change of position, or indicate direction on travel, not that the breadcrumb trail failed.  In fact the recorded ride shows no break at all in the breadcrumb trail and I did the app restart while moving.  It could have been an unfortunate loss of satellite signal at that moment but my phone was mounted in clear view of the sky with no buildings or leaf cover to interfere and on restarting my phone everything resumed as it should be immediately.

Sorry for my very late reply. I finally had time to really sit down for this one. It took me the better part of today to try and reproduce these. Here's what I found:

Context: I started a route with start point quite far away from current location. I made sure "guide me to route start" was enabled. I followed the route until I passed the first via point.

Then tried to add a few via points to try and reproduce this:

Scenic wouldn’t place a couple of via points where I wanted them and consistently placed them well off the road.  I used Undo and tried a few times, in different places close by, but the vias would not be placed on the road.

I stopped along the road, took of my gloves, moved the map and tapped "Edit/Change Route". Added a few via points and stops. All were added without problems, at the exact location where the crosshair was. So, I can not reproduce this so far.

I tapped "undo" anyway, to try and reproduce this:

the grey Via1 wouldn’t place on the road so I undid the placement and left it out but it was there on the road when I passed the location.

I did not see any grey via point at the location where I added and undid via points.
I did however notice that the first via point I added (which I did not undo), which I still did not reach yet, was grey. It was however the next waypoint in the "next waypoint" button and next waypoint button switched to next waypoint when I passed it. So, it seems that this was only a color thing, not a functionality thing.

Secondly (and repeatedly for me over the last few months), when tracking a ride (following a friend) I added a route (Edit/Change Route) to take me home further along the route my friend had plotted.  I chose not to be guided to route start.  We set off, Scenic wouldn’t track so I killed the app

I believe this is caused by switching to CarPlay while still being in edit mode on the iPhone. I'll try and fix that for the next update.

and restarted ‘resuming’ the ride.  I was then given navigation to the start of the route despite selecting I didn’t want that and when I arrived at the start point I was told I’d reached my destination and my planned route no longer existed.

I'll try and fix that for the next update too.

Thanks Guido, your efforts are very much appreciated.  Being unable to place via points on the cross hair has only happened to me that once and hasn’t reoccurred when I’ve done similar again.  I shall continue to report back issues if they happen and I’m now on the beta app, fewer ‘big’ rides now that winter is approaching but I will be riding throughout weather permitting.
