Managing shared routes with real time updates or shared settings

Hi Guido, thanks for your involvement in this forum.
Big fan of your app and as a premium user it's nice to have a voice in it's development.

Scenic is an amazing and very customizable app. When riders join me, I strongly recommend them to use it. Unfortunately, it can be challenging to quickly match our navigation views and calculated roads. Sharing the route doesn't solve this because a lot of settings can make them display and react differently.

Some other examples :

  • If my settings skips highways but not the other rider, navigation can be calculated differently
  • If I auto-skip waypoints but the other rider doesn't, the rest of the trip can become unusable for him
  • If I update waypoints while traveling, I must share the whole trip and the other rider needs to start from scratch

What I would love to do is one of these two options, preferably both :

  • Export and share settings.
This would make it easier to onboard a fellow rider and make them match all of my settings so we get the same views, navigation turns and ride events actions. They would then be able to tweak their preferences after having used it a couple of times with me.
  • Share a managed trip.
I create the whole thing (as owner) and can share a special managed trip (to riders) that includes waypoints, settings and views as a read-only experience for the other riders. If I change waypoints or views, they auto-update. When I end the share, they can either go back to their original settings or keep the new ones they've juste experienced. This one requires way more development but since I couldn't find any other app doing this, it could end up as a nice premium feature.

Thanks for considering!

* As a fellow senior developer, I'd be happy to help with testing if such features should fall into your working directory ✌️

Hi Reeshar,

This is already possible. You can share a link to your route. Here's a help article: https://scenic.app/help/sharing-routes-rides/

Once you share the route, and another user ads it to his routes, you remain the owner and any edit you do afterwards, will propagate to anyone with the route in his route list.

Best regards,
Guido

Hi Guido,

Thank you for your involvement and for providing the help article. I hadn't realized that route modifications propagate when shared 🤦🏻‍♂️; however, this doesn’t fully address the challenge I was referring to.

The issue arises when different settings within the app can lead to varied navigation experiences, which can make onboarding new riders a bit cumbersome. For instance, settings like auto-skipping waypoints can significantly alter the route. This often leads to confusion when I recommend Scenic to new riders and try to align our navigation views.

Here’s a typical exchange:

“Have you tried a motorcycling app?”
“No, any suggestions?”
“Sure, Scenic is great!”
“Can you set my app to match yours?”
(Then, I manually toggle settings on their device to match mine—hardly quick or efficient.)

This is why I believe an option to export and share settings could be beneficial. It would allow new users to start with a proven configuration, making it easier for them to match my settings and experience, and then personalize it later. Bonus points if I can test a new configuration myself and rollback if unsatisfied.

I understand these suggestions might not be high on the development priority list, but I wanted to share them for consideration.

Thanks again for your support!

Hi Reeshar,

I understand your point. But to be honest, I don't think I will build a feature to share settings with others. Exporting settings and importing them on another device might be even more complicated for some, than just sharing screenshots of your settings, or having the two phones side by side.

The default settings that Scenic has when first installing the app are the settings that work best for most use cases, and concretely, the only settings that can influence routing during navigation are the detour behavior settings.

Hope you understand.

Best regards,
Guido
